This is the Chandley Class Frigate! The design is from the old 1980's table top game by FASA, the Star Trek Starship Tactical Combat Simulator.
This is a marine carrier but not quite an assault ship, and certainly formidable in ship to ship combat.
This is presented from the point of view of an eager explorer, Captain Sorock, shortly after the events of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. All these combat oriented ships (like the Chandley Class) meant to protect the Federation from the Klingons need to be redeployed and given new missions.
As Guinan said in Yesterday's Enterprise, This is not a ship of war, this is a ship of peace! (at least after Khitomer).

Also part of the refit for research and exploration is a change in ship's replicators. They will no longer only produce rations designed to mimic crayons and tide pods.

I really enjoy these videos about the old FASA designs. I remember back in the day playing the Star Trek Combat Simulator, that this Chandley design was a favorite of mine because I loved the fact it had so many torpedoes that that they fired fore and aft. Good memories! Thank you. :)

Me and my brothers used to play the Star Trek FASA ship to ship game.
Massive battles, made all the better as we had the lead models fully painted.
One game stands out, I was federation, one brother was Romulan and the other Gorn.
My objective was to rescue the crew of a freighter, the Gorns had to steal plans, and the Romulans to stop me.
I had 2 Chandley Frigates, one with yellow marking and one with red.... 2 Loknars and 2 Larson's.
The Gorn had 4 of their flag ship vessels and the Romulans rode with 2 Winged Defenders, proper hard ships to beat, and 2 Romulan Bird of Prey.
The game lasted like 4 hours...... ship to ship combat, it had boarding as my brother had the crew personnel and ship boarding module.... and the tactics were so good, using control points to spread out across movement, shields, phasers etc.
I remember 1 Chandley got away and a crippled Loknar.
Wish people still played FASA as it pisses all over the table top games of today.

Being a Star Fleet Battles player, I'd like to say thanks for this video, but it's weird to see a commando ship with actual offense and frigates are on the small end of the spectrum unless you are playing ISC, Kzinti, or to a lesser extent Romulan and Gorn.

Its now uncommon for Western attack transports to be so well armed, but I think the inspiration for these ships are the US High Speed Transports of WWII (www.google.com/amp/s/thenavalist.com/home/2017/11/15/high-speed-transport-destroyers%3fformat=amp) ships that can deliver a company of commandos and be well armed enough not to need accompanying escorts.

"Frigates" in American naval tradition are usually smaller than destroyers. "Frigates" in Commonwealth naval tradition come in all sizes, usually between light destroyers and medium cruisers. The category also varies a lot historically.
"Frigates" in these FASA games are just very fast warships. Meaning they tend to have big powerful engines and they tend to be big powerful vessels (with strong armaments), mostly between cruisers and battleships.

All the FASA ships were added into the PC game Star Fleet Command many years ago by modders and modellers, such as myself and others.
For those who don't know, Star Fleet Command is the computer RTC game of Star Fleet Battles. Usually known as SFC it is the reason why Star Trek Legacy was such a flop as player compared Legacy with the vastly superior SFC. There were also the lack of realism and "cheats" allowed in Legacy that made it suck to play.
FASA ships work very well when converted to fit into the SFB / SFC gaming system, especially Klingon vessels. FASA did miss out the Star Trek canon phaser banks on the D7 battlecruiser (seen firing in DS9) which SFB / SFC includes.
I generally have the FASA ships in my SFC armed with disruptors only and they still do OK.
I've modelled starship designs from various sources, including books, drawings, etc. some of which work, others have serious power issues when it comes to charging weapons. For example the New Hampshire Class medium cruiser (created from diagrams found online), based on the Miranda hull, carries 8 x mega turrets (PH4 in SFB / SFC) but lacks the power sources to charge them quickly and keep shield reinforcing, ECM, propulsion and standard phaser defences operational in the heat of battle. Looks impressive but doesn't work when put to the test.

Something that is often overlooked in Star Trek TV and movies is the need for literal boots on the deck, if you will. It's a running joke that the Red Shirts primary purpose is to die so the main actors can live, and there's a lot of truth to that. It's a rare episode or movie (though Enterprises' MACO was a step forward) that showed the Security personal in a solid light. That nearly every foe the Federation faces has dedicated combat persons (or are nearly all trained as warriors of some sort) it is insane that the Federation isn't better equipped to deal with them. While true large scale ground conflicts would be few and far in between there will always be a need for personal whose job is to hold, protect, or intrude on in force, other beings. FASA attempted to account for a wider, more diverse Star Fleet with the addition of such ships as this and the troop transports. While Gene truly wanted an enlightened, forward thinking Federation in his visions all we have to do is look at DS9 and the conflict with the Dominion to fully understand how unrealistic his visions were. We only have to look at our own history to understand that humanity is not ever likely to get past an inherent need to protect and defend itself (and occasionally, force it's whims on others). It's in our very nature.

I had so many escort missions for this class when I played FASA. They are tough little birds that rarely needed help. Tried more than once to get one added to my little 4 ship fleet. But the game master always refused. Saying that adding a Chandley class to a fleet that already has 1 Loknar and 3 Larsons would be to overpowering. He may have been right. But would have been fun to play.

FASA lore also had Klingon ships packing troops in greater density. They'd basically just feed them, stick them in cryotubes, thaw them out when needed for battle.
Although Klingon cryo devices weren't completely safe. And Klingon transporters (faster and quieter, for tactical advantage) weren't completely safe. But 1% or 2% casualties to deploy twice as many troops twice as quickly was apparently an acceptable tradeoff to the Klingons.

We don't know really until the Defiant in DS9 shows up. This ship is not canon but the design has been around since the 80's. Its possible that we'll see some combat-designed ships in ST Discovery when it comes out. FASA had a few combat oriented designs like this one and the Loknar class.

I always hated that about Star Trek. All of this where peaceful explorers nonsense it's just annoying. Yes the Klingons and a federation or brokering a peace deal but the romulans the Kardashians the Ferengi and even groups like the Orion syndicate we're still a Potential Threat. there should be no reason for any organization under these circumstances to not have a combat ready Fleet comprised of ships that are armed to the teeth and crude by combat ready personnel. Furthermore there shouldn't be any families aboard Starships unless you are colonizing a planet.

I dislike many FASA designs, and this one was one of them. Seems like a ham-fisted attempt to make a Starfleet design swoopy and menacing. IMO, it just doesn't "work" From the elevation views, it seems too unbalanced as well.
