As far as Star Trek series go TNG and on, the only faction that got good treatment spaceship-wise were the Klingons. I am going to say it....I really didn't like the Galaxy class(well, except for in Generations. She did look good on the big screen.) And the Defiant is cool but never seemed that badass. It's supposed to be a Borg-killer and yet keeps getting overwhelmed by everyone. And when it finally went up against the Borg in First Contact, it got beat down well before the Cube started feeling like it was in a battle. It would have been sweet if in both the Reboot movies and Discovery, there was actual attention given to what fans imagined and less designers just making stuff up to fill the screen with. Imagine if in Star Trek '09 the Kobayashi Maru was more the design of the Starfleet freighter that was imagined clear back in the old manual, that had much the same appearance as the Miranda class with freight modules. Unfortunately, FASA and Paramount did not end their relationship on good terms. And with FASA's demise, I doubt that we will ever see any FASA designs become cannon. The same holds true for the ships from the Axinar.
🖖😎👍Very cool and very nicely well done and very well informatively explained and executed in every detail and every shape way and form possibly provided on all these great starship designs by Fasa and so forth. I myself still have some of those old Fasa ships myself and I still have the board games and some of the books on various ships and so forth indeed 👌.
Loknar and Andor-classes are beautiful ships, but I'd love to see the Akula-class over-and-under-nacelle destroyer in a movie or show. Heck, it'd make a great looking hero ship.
Sadly, these days we only see ships emulating worn old Enterprise looks or garish new munchkin things with 4+ warp nacelles sticking out of a pointy armoured mountain.
Yeah, it's the humbler stuff of Star Trek lore that always gets me. I appreciate the works of FASA and fans that go the length to bring their ideas to light. I even created a light cruiser class to fill that void during the Star Trek OS movie era (FASA canon); the Independence class. I still have my original artwork on notebook paper. :)
Nice compilation there. I'd suggest ships like the Federation, Ascension, Star Union, Hornet, Detroyat and the Decatur classes, the Klingon K'teremny Cruiser, the Romulan Kerchan, Stormbird, Condor and Sunhawk Warbirds.
Awesome work RS...I am a HUGH fan of many of the FASA designs as well. One in particular is the Northampton Class X Frigate. Her lines are as beautiful as the Enterprise Class (Constitution refit by non FASA references) IMO. Would love to see you do something on her. Have seen a few attempts but they didn't do her justice.
By calling the Movie era refit as ‘the’ refit, people ignore past refits of the class, like one between Pike and Kirk. So, nice to see another who uses the proper name of Enterprise class.
The D-7's appearance in ENT was literally a last-minute bodge because the art team had put in a week of overtime to design a new Klingon ship and it DIDN'T get approved. So they threw the D-7 into the VFX shots because the art team was so overworked and the art was already so late that there wasn't another last-minute all-nighter in them and they HAD to get the VFX started or they wouldn't be ready by the time the episode had to go to the TV stations to air.
I always like to the civilian craft; the freighters, deep space tugs, transports, and liners. These are the nuts and bolts of any civilization and they permeate society. Ships like these would be great background filler for the great starships when they are in heavily populated systems. Giving a sense of detail and a "lived in" look to the civilization.
0:11 The Excalibur class Dreadnought. The Charleston class Battlecruiser. The Dawnstar class Explorer. The Achilles class Strategic Heavy Cruiser. The Hornet class Holocloak Escort. The Diligent class heavy escort. The Ascension class Star Cruiser. The Dedication class Explorer. Just some fan designs. Except that Achilles class... God damn what a fine ship.
Constitution class command ship. A slightly bigger Constitution class. The saucer and engineering section had a few extra decks and the nacelles were mounted on slightly smaller struts that were attached to the lower section of the engineering hull. It had stronger shields and phaser cannons. They was used by high ranking officers of Starfleet such as Commodore's. Only a few were built.
Great essay video. I miss the old FASA days, but can understand why they lost their license. Used to have three miniatures from the game... The refit Constitution class (erroneously called the Enterprise class), the Miranda class (erroneously called the Reliant class), and another ship which I think might have been a Federation scout class wessel...er, I mean, vessel. I think one other ship that might have been interesting to see on the screen was the Klingon B-4 battleship from Star Fleet Battles. It was an ungainly looking beast, but it was indeed a beast! There was a Klingon battleship in FASA, the L-24 that I think would have also made an interesting appearance. I might have to try my hand at CG modeling some of these ships. :)
From the FASA RPG, the Nelson Class. I love it probably because it was my first view of a ship like that. I know it's basically a Saladin class, but FASA did it first (i think!). My top ship, though- the Romulan Harpy from the PC game Star Trek Legacy. I love the look, and I was really good at commanding it. I really wish the Harpy was in STO, or that I could find ST Legacy somewhere just to command that ship again. Rihannsu forever :)
1:15 the Loknar class actually DID make it, but, as a kelvin timeline starship, called the U.S.S. Franklin, and was MUCH smaller, and also apparently was during the ENT era.
The Derf-Class should be a ship in Star Trek Online. Be one a Premium T1 starship and of course will have a Retrofit version that is up to date with technology of the era but keep that classic look. It would still be useful and be a perfect Science ship with the powerful sensor array it would have. Derf-Class ships would not be combat focus but will have some bite with the Retrofit Model. It would have a special ability allowing it to reduce a target's Damage Reduction or something. Or allow Ally ships to have a better hit chance. A very team player ship. Oh and for Engineer Captains. Orbital Strikes are pin perfect to nail a single target on the surface of a planet but have to take "Derf Sensor Array" perk to have that ability.
Yes! Spent many an hour hunched over a hex grid, blowing up starships with the FASA game. Made great use of the Sting tongue in my day, but you covered all the best. Thank you.
If you had one derf class cover the entire federation area imagine how many more adventures they would just have all across the galaxy and unique places they would visit.
I played in a TNG campaign where my captain commanded a super-updated Constitution class and was crewed by cat-sized automated work bugs with a few engineers and a handful of officers. My first command was a modified stolen space tug. I stole a decommissioned Constitution class from a shipyard that was kept as a monument... wasn't my first pick. I worked out of Orion space, I was a "mercenary"... former federation. We pondered Star Trek not-so-good guys when we created our team. I was captain only because our team preferred me to be captain, like the pseudo-democracy of ancient Earth pirate ships. Any chance you can use the inspiration you got to create this video to make a video of a captain like that? One of our fun non-combat struggles is making alien systems compatible. We ended up "upgrading" to a singularity core. Our campaign ended when our tiny little Constitution replica became too awesome for the things that used to make us struggle, while being to little for next-level challenges.
oh ok .. do we not use TUGs to pull stranded ships here on Earth ... If a liner or container ship breaks down ....do we not send fucking TUGS to recover the ship. Space is far bigger but the same need for tugs are there... what happens if you need to be recovered light years from a Starbase ..
Towing in space with tractor beams isn’t point-and-click. You have to have engines strong and durable enough to pull that much extra mass without overheating as well as precisely orient both yourself and what you are towing to balance the load.
There are 3 TMP era Starfleet ships I would really like to see become canon in Trek. The Abbé class torpedo cruiser, the Akyazi/Akula class corvette, & the Hornet class pursuit ship.
FASA's Romulans were the best. I still favor SFB's take on the Gorn, to FASA's oversized shuttlecraft. Slow moving and talking doesn't necessarily mean slow thinking. Much love for the destroyers; Fed Wilkerson class and the Romulan Bright One. Sent many a Ridgie to Stovokor with both back in the day.
Gotta use the Derf class as bait in my fan fiction. Fixing boyies and all of a sudden BAM! The Klingon Romulan Alliance comes outta nowhere with some Winged Defenders and a Bird of Prey. Pew Pew Pew and then a distress call is sent.
I cannot believe that somebody else likes the "Derf". I was showing my son my old FASA manuals and he laughed at me. Because of the name. And because it was a repair ship. I told him, "I would make a few special modifications myself." By the way, thanks for the channel! Obviously I love it!
I, personally, am a fan of Battleships, so I'd would liked to have seen something like the Mars-Class from SFB or the Yamato-Class from the SFC series.
Space passenger ships and hospital ships. I’ve been thinking those should exist. Imagine what the Princess from the Love Boat tv series might look like in Star Trek space or The Queen Mary. The hospital ships Mercy and Comfort might look like in Star Trek Space.
@@dontroutman8232 The "Fat Man" is the L-13. The L-24 Ever-Victorious is the "cool" battleship, the Klingon equivalent of the Excelsior-class. If FASA designs had a place in canon, L-24 would be a predecessor to the Negh'var-class battleship from Deep Space Nine. I would say the one weakness of FASA's Klingon designs is their over-reliance on the D-7 style warp nacelles. As we've seen in subsequent canon, it looks like nacelle designs tend to be shared by a small group of starships designed and commissioned within a short period of time.
I used to love the small FASA patrol and escort ships, their equivalent of the Flower Class corvette's, ships with inherent weaknesses but ships that would make more likely first commands for newly promoted officers in role playing.
I definitely wish the Typhon class was more widely used even in non-canon or fan projects. I was inspired by it so I got around to modifyng the Prometheus calss for a role-playing campaign by scalung up its dimensions and allowing it to carry fighters.
The Klingon ship on Axanar, not was a D-6 ?? I talked with Stourangeau when the first image from Axanar come out, about how they D-6 was very similar to the D-6 concept that I did for ST Origins.
Just now looking at an online scan of the FASA Federation Ship Recognition Manual Volume 1 (which I actually owned and loved as a kid) I’m looking at the info relating to the Thufir Class VIII-IX Destroyers and it’s kinda hard not to flinch a little when you look at the body-count. “Of the 374 Thufir Class destroyers built, 192 Mk Is and 136 Mk IIIs remain in active service, with 6 Mk Is in reserve fleets. Of the remainder, 1 Mk III is used by Star Fleet Training Command, 26 Mk Is and 8 Mk IIIs have been destroyed; 1 Mk III is listed as missing; 1 Mk I and 2 Mk IIIs have been scrapped; and 1 Mk I had been sold to civilian commercial concerns. The Thufir, An Andorian design, is produced at the Morena and Salazaar shipyards at a combined rate of 15 per year. Each Thufir Class destroyer had a crew complement of 180- rather small considering some of the other ships in Star Fleet. Nevertheless, “26 Mk Is and 8 Mk IIIs have been destroyed; 1 Mk III is listed as missing.” So, you mean to tell me, Star Fleet lost 35 of their starships-just in a single class of starship alone, not even counting any other losses elsewhere with other crews and classes of ships? I’m not asking as a serious question, just pointing out a fact of the old FASA universe that I don’t think would work well with the rest of the Trek universe. Not saying one’s better than another or anything, but 35 destroyed/missing ships means 6,300 dead or missing crewmen. For a single class of starship. All of that aside, I love the designs from that manual and I would love to see some of those designs hit the big or small screen at some point, however unlikely.
don't forget some of the crews could have beamed to other ships or down to a near by planet or used escape pods to get off the ship before it was destroyed as for the MIA ship well we have no idea if they are dead or alive.
Also, not all ships were probably lost or destroyed together in the same period. It could be relatively small amounts of ships over a long period of time, not including any combat missions or wars, pirate attacks, stolen starships, etc. ;)
OK well as much as I love this video I would also like to state why in the hell it took so long for the algorithm to bring this video up on my queue. RUclips seriously get your goddamn algorithm in line pass a Star Trek this channel should be top on my queue what the hell!
Unusual selections. I expect most lists on this topic would just pick the most ostentatious or dangerous ships. Do you know if the Loknar (hey, Heavy Metal reference!) class predates the Akira?
The Mann-class, which in my opinion, is what the NX-01 should have been and a precursor to the Daedalus-class. (If it had to be an Enterprise, then I'd go with the XCV-330.) The NX-01 felt too slim whereas the Mann feels like it could shed a few pounds by integrating smaller Vulcan warp cores which don't take up half of the ship. I’d also recommend checking out the fan-designed DY-series, especially the DY-1200 is a gorgeous pre-TOS design which strikes the balance between being rudimentary and sophisticated and just a wonderful design evolution which pays homage to the DY-500. The USS Spirit (NCC-79995), a neat little quantum-slipstream prototype which I enjoy for being different. The Voth’s Fortress-class. There is in my opinion no better way of saying. “The Borg don’t bother the Voth that much.” Regarding the Derf-class. The thing which fascinated me most about that design was that it was built exclusively at the Merak shipyards, which in FASA, is in orbit of a planet belonging to the Vulcan Confederacy. Which could make this a Vulcan Starfleet design.
The Orion Wanderer would be a good one, especially since they show the isometric views of one on a viewscreen that from the dialog is apparently being used by Starfleet (it makes sense, the Orions seem to be willing to sell anyone anything for the right price and when Starfleet is desperate enough to build the kitbashes, buying some foreign warships of a proven design is an obvious step to take too)
I tell you some cool designs come out of a game called Star Trek shattered universe it looked similar to an excelsior but it had one one to sell on the top one to sell on the bottom and it had its main torpedo tube in the front of the saucer I never understood why the Star Trek ships didn't have their weapons in the rim of the saucer
I would like to see someone take the upgraded constructug "tyranosaurus rex" from the novel "Battlestations". There are very nice drawing already in the book all they would need to do is apply color.
Hi there, I have a tiny correction to a credit. The Phobos may have been animated by unusualsuspex, but was built by Kevin Riley. I downloaded it myself from SFM during the golden age of me almost knowing how to build starships. :)
0:55 the scale of the K'Tinga in comparison to the old or new Constitution class, much less the original D-7, is a bit _wonky_ to put it lightly. If one looks at the K'Tinga as portrayed in the film ST:TMP, it has to be _huge_ in comparison to the new Enterprise; there are 2 rows of window lights in the equator of the front command pod. If that indicates 2 human/klingon levels, the K'Tinga would be at least twice the size of the Enterprise. Even if one considers the flat "head" on top of the command pod to be equal in the thickness of the Enterprise saucer, that would still mean at least 2, if not 3 decks, which would still make the K'Tinga to be longer that the Enterprise (and probably comparable in square footage).

FASA T10 and D2 my all time favorites from a design aesthetic beautiful ships
Nice compilation there. I'd suggest ships like the Federation, Ascension, Star Union, Hornet, Detroyat and the Decatur classes, the Klingon K'teremny Cruiser, the Romulan Kerchan, Stormbird, Condor and Sunhawk Warbirds.
These are FASAnating! I've always liked the Proxima class myself, it's what Starfleet would make out of a battleship concept.
How about the old Orion pirate raider. Jack of all trades.
Andor class was the ship I used to dominate in the star trek fasa rpg

The Excalibur class Dreadnought.
Personally, I prefer the elegance of the Gorn designs from Starfleet Batttles...
Amarillo Design Bureau put out many great ship miniatures, and covered many of the races from the O.S.
That Gorn battleship was a thing of beauty!
Wow the D4 is Just beautiful
I merged a Winged Defender mini with a Graceful Flyer mini. They blended together beautifully.
Pics or it didnt happen!
I'm not sure I have the minis any more, but I'll poke around.
@@MichaelBradley1967 i'd never get rid of my FASA minis, they are my go to comfort items
The Achilles class should honestly be shown. It's just so cool.
I have a number of FASA ships in my fleet, including the Andor, Northampton, D-10 Cruiser, B-10 Battleship, Winged Defender and Whitewind.
STOs Odyssey class is a lovely design, I'd love to see it on screen.
Yes! Spent many an hour hunched over a hex grid, blowing up starships with the FASA game. Made great use of the Sting tongue in my day, but you covered all the best. Thank you.
I think the Gorn ships from SFB would be good options, too. FASA did for Star Trek what West End Games did for Star Wars.
If you had one derf class cover the entire federation area imagine how many more adventures they would just have all across the galaxy and unique places they would visit.
I like the design, but I hate the name "Derf"....it sounds like an itchy skin complaint...
Definitely the USS Bismarck (proxima class) from Star Trek Legacy.
I feel like any Starfleet ship can act as an effective tug because of tractor beams.
100% there is no things that down turn that
Who needs tugs anyway. Starbases have tractor beam arrays for guiding ships into them. And ships themselves have omnidirectional thrusters.
oh ok .. do we not use TUGs to pull stranded ships here on Earth ...
Cost-effectiveness. You don't send a ship-of-the-line to go tow someone's yacht.
The D-4 shown here is referred to as the D-6 class in Prelude to Axanar.
Colin Bridger see did I mess up? Cannot!
Dammit
It is still a beautiful design, just the same
He Chandley - one awesome look
Gotta use the Derf class as bait in my fan fiction. Fixing boyies and all of a sudden BAM! The Klingon Romulan Alliance comes outta nowhere with some Winged Defenders and a Bird of Prey. Pew Pew Pew and then a distress call is sent.
I cannot believe that somebody else likes the "Derf". I was showing my son my old FASA manuals and he laughed at me. Because of the name. And because it was a repair ship. I told him, "I would make a few special modifications myself." By the way, thanks for the channel! Obviously I love it!
TheDing1701 the venerable DERF is paramount for Starfleet operations!
Maybe not "Paramount", at least CBS...
Too soon? (Or early?) As a Trekkie, (not Trekker) I feel substantial trepidation regarding the release of the new series.
Indeed. But there is hope. Orville is coming out, and if Discovery fails Nicholas Myers is rumored to have plans to do a whole different Trek series.
Yeah I have seen some stuff on that, Orville looks great. God, I hope Nicholas Meyer... it's sad that James Horner is gone now...
The hospital ships Mercy and Comfort might look like in Star Trek Space.
loved these, especially the Andor class
Okay, the Chariot class tug looked great
Don't stop. Love FASAS star trek.
What about the Klingon L-24 Super Battle cruiser from FASA?
The Fat Man, aka the Turtle!
The Andorian class looks like a federation version of the Cardassian Galor class. I think the Abbé class torpedo destroyer is better.
The Winged Defender and the Chandley class comes to mind...
I used to love the small FASA patrol and escort ships, their equivalent of the Flower Class corvette's, ships with inherent weaknesses but ships that would make more likely first commands for newly promoted officers in role playing.
I always loved the Continent-class assault cruiser. Armed to the teeth, carried fighters & assault shuttles and Federation marines.
I wound up loving the Derf way more than I should.
indeed! I think when I make a video about it I wil lcall it 'the most important ship in starfleet'. :D
I was always partial to the FASA Chandley class frigate. Also the Hornet class fighter carrier (L. Miller design),
Just now looking at an online scan of the FASA Federation Ship Recognition Manual Volume 1 (which I actually owned and loved as a kid) I’m looking at the info relating to the Thufir Class VIII-IX Destroyers and it’s kinda hard not to flinch a little when you look at the body-count.
Nevertheless, “26 Mk Is and 8 Mk IIIs have been destroyed; 1 Mk III is listed as missing.”
So, you mean to tell me, Star Fleet lost 35 of their starships-just in a single class of starship alone, not even counting any other losses elsewhere with other crews and classes of ships? I’m not asking as a serious question, just pointing out a fact of the old FASA universe that I don’t think would work well with the rest of the Trek universe. Not saying one’s better than another or anything, but 35 destroyed/missing ships means 6,300 dead or missing crewmen. For a single class of starship.
All of that aside, I love the designs from that manual and I would love to see some of those designs hit the big or small screen at some point, however unlikely.
don't forget some of the crews could have beamed to other ships or down to a near by planet or used escape pods to get off the ship before it was destroyed as for the MIA ship well we have no idea if they are dead or alive.
lordmech True, there’s always that.
Do you know if the Loknar (hey, Heavy Metal reference!) class predates the Akira?
j cohen oh yes. The Loknar is a 1980s creation. Almost all the Fasa ships are.
That was my D4 model... :)
“The Borg don’t bother the Voth that much.”
Regarding the Derf-class. The thing which fascinated me most about that design was that it was built exclusively at the Merak shipyards, which in FASA, is in orbit of a planet belonging to the Vulcan Confederacy. Which could make this a Vulcan Starfleet design.
Favourite ship that should appear in the movies is the Proxima class from Star Trek Legacy!
The tug has to be one of the most neat looking ships
The Andor class looks a lot like a Galor. Was the Galor inspired by the Andor.
Very cool. Maybe one day we can see the Ranger class scout?
The Orion Wanderer would be a good one, especially since they show the isometric views of one on a viewscreen that from the dialog is apparently being used by Starfleet (it makes sense, the Orions seem to be willing to sell anyone anything for the right price and when Starfleet is desperate enough to build the kitbashes, buying some foreign warships of a proven design is an obvious step to take too)
Just realized I forgot the Pacific fan-film ship!
I think we will forgive you. Thanks again for all your work.
NOT discovery uh Pacific!
I loved the defender but I got ahold of a ptolemy heavy tug with a battle pod. It was wicked.
The studio still doesn't care about hard core fans, or continuity.
Or ships that actually look like ships.
.
Oh...sorry, that's the fans.
The proxima class will always be my favorite non canon ship.
4:56 the kelvin timeline verison of the D4 is called a D4x, thank you Star Trek Online!
Amassing effort, well done.
My only criticism is that these are battle cruisers, not warbirds
The Chariot Class is cool.
Great work here... as for ships I’d like to see how about the Romulan Nova or Klingon Ever Victorious
Love them all !
have wondered what a Iowa class battleship would look like in star trek.
Sovereign/Galaxy/Odyssey..?
Why not a debris clearance vessel? Lots of small phasers for vaporizing debris?
As amazing as a wing defender is I would contest the nova class battleship especially the lead figurine was absolutely stunning and amazing I would say it’s the #1 Romulan design from FASA, Just a personal choice.
I always liked the D-9 "seeker"
5:34 my how thing has change on that front.
I'd like to see the Constitution, Miranda and Starstalker class together in a film or ST episode
