The thing I love about your videos is that your so honest about what your talking about good or bad. I can’t believe you have 60 copies of any particular album; what type of storage capacity do you have for your personal collection.
Oh yeah, we’ll the copy I’ve got, Jerry Garcia snorted coke on the jacket, left a handprint of his right hand from a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on, and signed the album. Now, I’d say that pretty rare.
I love you just showing the different pressings of the album and what makes them unique. I am a collector myself (more so on the CD and cassette side) and I seem to be diving into this kind of collecting. I think it means more to have all these cool pressings from a band I like, than trying to get a little bit of everything from all of my favourite bands and just digging myself a financial hole in doing so. This is the first time I am seeing a video of yours, I hope I can find more videos just displaying your records like this (I personally am not an audiophile so the sound quality doesn't interest me unless it is significant enough.)
I would have been laying in bed at night wide awake thinking about that record in Denver. Lol. Congrats Mike. I love the 30th anniversary DSOTM. I can only imagine how good the test pressing sounds.
Awesome find Mike! I'm stil holding out for the rare pressing where side 2 is just 20 minutes of Roger and Dave saying how good of friends they are and how they always will be. Want to hear that so bad.
Best version I've ever heard was DSOM (white) from the Netherlands. It was at the RMAF in 2015 on a blend of Red Wine Audio, McIntosh tube, and Zu Audio speakers. It drew some very serious attention and no one left the room until the album was complete.
Yes, incredible details on some of the instruments (on the Dutch white vinyl), guitars in particular "jump outta the speakers at you. But no one there noticed the bass being very shy? Why not?
What you have is beyond my comprehension..just incredible!!. I have one copy an early UK pressing A/3 B/3 which still sounds fantastic after owning it for nearly 50 years.
This was an incredible and my favourite kind of video (though I do love all of In Groove’s vids). I’m personally trying to tame the collector beast inside me (for you it was sports cards, for me it was comic books that spawned the bug), but I do love seeing a well curated collection of records with full provenance documentation.
The best version is whatever version you already own. You gotta sniff quite a few tubes of glue to justify thousands of dollars for an album that has many excellent pressings.
As always I think you're crazy Mike I picked up a 40th anniversary of dark side of the moon for $22 it doesn't have a tick or a pop or anything on it it is clean as you can get a record and that's good enough for me and I'm sure 99.9% of us would love to have a copy like that, this searching for the holy Grail is crazy🤔
Congrats Mike, cool collection piece. UK Blue Triangle Test Press next? ;^) Even factory made cartridges have differentiating voltage outputs. I have 2 AT carts, same model, but one is slightly louder.
As a serious Pink Floyd fan, I found this video to be absolutely stellar! 👍👍👍👍👍 Congratulations on acquiring a very, very cool test pressing of one of the greatest albums of all time. 👏👏👏👏👏 Now if you could find an equivalent test pressing of Pink Floyd The Wall, I'd be even more impressed.
I had a test pressing for the Krokus album, “One Vice At A Time”, and the lead track, “Long Stick Goes Boom”, was full of skips starting after the separated intro to the actual track.
I saw Floyd in Adelaide in 88. I wasn't a fan before that. But I went out and bought a vinyl boxed set which had all the albums from Wish you Were Here onwards. Then I bought DSOTM which was a quad pressing. I think I still have that. I have several versions on cd. My favourite PF album is Animals. Will probably get the new remix. Great video dude!
I have the 30th Anniversary edition. Its great as most people know. This is so cool. I would love to hear it. Are we getting an official 50th Anniversary?
I was waiting to see if you had the Yugoslavian version as I bought my copy while on holiday there in the late 80's along with lots of other records (they were so cheap i could not believe it), including wish you were here and the final cut. My Yugoslavian version has the Jugoton sign on the front but not the other sign which might be quadraphonic version so your one may well be quad.
What's the deal with storing records outside of the sleeve? I know, I've seen it, supposedly less warping, but the records just aren't protected properly. There's no way I would store mine that way
that 1st edition uk press you show that's still in the shrink is like something out of a dream, like it was freshly picked off the rack on day of release back in 1973. I have a 5th press UK, its a decent one for a bargain.
Fingers crossed for a 50th Anniversary UHQR. Just hope that if they do it, it's at 33 not 45. I know audiophiles will defend 45 to the ends of the earth, but it is an album that should not be broken up, imo. The flow is too important to the overall presentation.
Thanks Mike I have only you to blame for giving me the heads up on the 30th anniversary.Got one on Discogs three years ago still on the shrink best $60.00 bucks I ever spent sounds beautiful.
I have sealed copy (2 LP set ) of DCC LPZ-2052 Deep Purple test pressing bought from Acoustic Sounds 2005. Can't seem to find any info anywhere. Any insight ? Thanks
I am wondering, I got a old copy from dark side of the moon and for this copy there are no prices on discogs. Could you rate my copy by knowing what is writen in the death wax??
i have some 1973 japanese pressing, the 1978 picture disc and soon getting the first pressing original master recording. very proud of my dark side collection 💪
I bought a copy of Dark Side back when I was in high school in 1973. Over the years I also had a copy on 8-track and cassette. Later a copy on compact disc. I also had the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs "Original Master" recording album on virgin vinyl and a Super Audio CD.
Cool video, Mike! Maybe you can enlighten me on one of my copies of DSOTM. It's a 3rd US pressing from LA with side 1 label text starting at 10:00 but side 2 label has the text starting at 8:00. Any thoughts on this one?
I got a copy, and know the story. RTI gave a copy each to a small group on a plant tour of the facility. I was one of the people on that day. I think there are slightly more than 10, maybe 15-20 copies since I know how many people were on that tour, and exactly who they were. I still am not sure why the original owners list had to be redacted from the letter.
Bought this album when it came out ,listened to it all day and went and saw them that night, best concert l ever saw and l saw a lot of concerts back then ,it was David Gilmours birthday, the band announced it , Saint Louis ,March 6 or 3 it was great had center balcony seats hanging over the balcony rails ,best light show and they had big old speakers up in balcony . Best five dollars l ever spent .l think between the album the gas getting there and the concert, 15 bucks
like Robert said it is true- sometimes little things seem like they cost us disproportionately more... but in the end we have to judge the cost against the enjoyment we believe we'll get. Dark Side turned into a white rhino for me long ago, for mostly the same reasons.
I've had a copy of the UK solid blue with different labels on side a+b but the same a side pressed on both sides. Pretty rare I would say. Should probably have held on to it but sold it online.
I think the orig Japanese test pressing with the live cover shot is rarer but that is a tasty item. Personally I prefer the orig Japanese Odeon over the 30th but it's a close run thing. The Japanese issue sounds more like a band, better definition but the 30th sounds more iconic with boosted bass.
Thanks. Interesting. Japan was not the only other country to use the solid blue triangle. South Africa also used it on the 1st pressing. South African pressings sounds pretty crappy, mostly.
I have the 30th Anniv edition which sounds great as we know. I have compared it to an original Canadian first press of Dark Side. That sounds better. However the 30th is still worth owning. That's quite a haul Mike. I'd be curious to know what it's worth. BTW, that test pressing is prob a hot stamper- deep groove which is maybe why it seemed louder than the 30th, just a guess.
I had no idea there was a Japanese CD-4 quadraphonic pressing! I only knew of QS quadraphonic pressings (I have one from the UK), but obviously CD-4 was discreet (and superior) while SQ was matrix.
I’m hoping there be a 50th anniversary next year that will be the definitive version, until then it’s hard for me to listen to anything but the SACD in 5.1
The SACD version is the definition of excellence . I gave up on my multiple vinyl versions. No wonder CD and SACD is making a comeback. Sadly vinyl FOMO is killing the listener enjoyment to hoarding unopened versions.
I'm with you..I have multiple copies too and the SACD is fabulous. I also have a bluray of it. Unfortunately it's coded for China so my player won't play it. Love to know what its like.
I wish it was amazingly better than everything else but it sounds like reviewer hype . The 50th anniversary is coming do you think we will see something amazing ? Have you heard anything on the grape vine ?
Had the original specials at least a year before anyone else heard it . Certain differences stood out if you know: btw eskimos heard it first transmitted
It is a good album, however I'm pretty happy with my remastered 2011 vinyl pressing of that record, really if you heard it on Spotify or RUclips before then any vinyl version will cut an edge to that simply because it's a different experience on vinyl, compared to CDs or digital stream. It is because the natural pause after "the great gig in the sky" which is interesting because there is a meaning to having to get up and change side after the first side itself is about life and death putting you subconsciously in the mood for the next side which is about society and modern life too it puts in question why we get up and carry on and why we do that and then "money" starts and we on for the next ride in the album. Pink Floyd really put alot of thoughts into the album.
My best friend has quite a few rare pressings too. I wish I knew his new address. He keeps moving all the time. You would think he is trying to avoid me.
I haven't heard the Pro Use pressing, but I do own the Abbey Road Pro Use and in my limited experience, it's the best I've heard. What is it about the Pro Use DSOTM that you're not down on?
The thing I love about your videos is that your so honest about what your talking about good or bad. I can’t believe you have 60 copies of any particular album; what type of storage capacity do you have for your personal collection.
He didn't drop that fact for no reason. That is him flexing his muscles. Thats why I broke into his locker!
Oh yeah, we’ll the copy I’ve got, Jerry Garcia snorted coke on the jacket, left a handprint of his right hand from a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on, and signed the album. Now, I’d say that pretty rare.
Lol, I was about to post an almost identical comment. It too involved a line of coke...

I'll give you 20 for it

"we'll the copy"?

excellent video … always a pleasure to hear more stories on DSOT. thanks Michael… Azmi of Malaysia
Awesome find Mike! I'm stil holding out for the rare pressing where side 2 is just 20 minutes of Roger and Dave saying how good of friends they are and how they always will be. Want to hear that so bad.
I love watching all of your comparison videos, but I especially love the Pink Floyd focused episodes.
Best version I've ever heard was DSOM (white) from the Netherlands. It was at the RMAF in 2015 on a blend of Red Wine Audio, McIntosh tube, and Zu Audio speakers.

Enjoy your purchase Mike, you are entitled to treat yourself, you’ve worked hard for it.
Most expensive DSOTM too, I had that RTI on my wantlist and it came up but I was not wanting to spend 2400 on it, congrats on pulling the trigger
What you have is beyond my comprehension..just incredible!!. I have one copy an early UK pressing A/3 B/3 which still sounds fantastic after owning it for nearly 50 years.
Great video Mike! Was hoping this was one of your Legendary "Spoof" videos though lol
Congratulations Mike! It’s always the thrill of the hunt with record collecting!🎉
Congratulations on finding and getting this record.

Congratulations on getting that test pressing. Fantastic collection of Dark Side!
11:00 this is not CD4 release. "RM" means "Regular matrix", Sansui format.
Definitely one of the greatest albums of all time. Fun watching you go through all of those. I have a few versions, not UK though.
One of my favorite sounding versions is the first Italian. It is dead quiet and reminds me most of the UK first press. It has become my play copy.
Whoooa amazing find, for my ears the 30th anniv. Remains the best sounding
Congrats on getting a copy. I'm never letting mine go. Gifted to me by RTI
All of our packages from southern California go through Denver on their way to Tucson now too.

Great you have this man enjoy it 🙂
Nice find! Should we ever be wary of some test pressings? I always wondered if “rejected” test pressings are out there. There’s no way to know.
The rejected test pressings tend to be worth except some instances of lack of playability.
I had a test pressing for the Krokus album, “One Vice At A Time”, and the lead track, “Long Stick Goes Boom”, was full of skips starting after the separated intro to the actual track.
@@TheInGroove I just read this three times and I’m not sure what you mean
I saw Floyd in Adelaide in 88.

I have the 30th Anniversary edition. Its great as most people know. This is so cool. I would love to hear it. Are we getting an official 50th Anniversary?
Does it have the orginal Syd Barrett mix with a "I love you David" signed by Roger? That's rare.
Great Dark Side collection!
Dude, what the heck!!! You have a test pressing of the 30th anniversary of Dark Side of the Moon?! I’m so envious of you!

What is the EMI 100 version like? It was skipped over pretty quickly but I guess the quick thumbs up at the end means it’s good?
What's the deal with storing records outside of the sleeve? I know, I've seen it, supposedly less warping, but the records just aren't protected properly. There's no way I would store mine that way
A pressing from Holland or The Netherlands?

True, the sequencing and flow would be all f'd up if they did it on 45rpm.
Very good point.
Absolutely should not be broken up.
I'm a big fan of 45-RPM records, but I agree with you.
Both versions would be fine. Just like Kind of Blue.

Yugoslavian pressing is quadraphonic. It uses UK metal parts.
Same for the Australian quad.

I think the commercial pressings of the ‘03 issue are still well-regarded. Sold my copy for over $200 a few months ago and the buyer was very happy.
Mine is a double sleeve with lyrics and has a poster. How much do you think it's worth?
Thanks for info Mike, I think that the Swedish edition of TDSOTM sounds beautiful.
But from all those 60 Copies you own of DSOTM, which one is the “go to“ if you put it on your turn table?
At first I thought I was going to be shown a U.K. first pressing Man City colour label pressing thanks for this test pressing presentation.
Talk about the very fine line between having something and actually enjoying it. Whatever, it’s your thing…
Mike, could you do a shoot-out of The Doors S/T debut?
I had a 2003 copy of the DSOTM. I sold it. Oh boy, I regret selling it.
Hi mate, the sudafrican press also have the blue prism
Might I get an opinion on a German 2nd pressing copy? I thought it sounded better than the 30th Anniversary edition. What say you, Mike?
German 1st sounds even better.🎉
I got a cherry quad mix that my brother bought when stationed in Germany. It’s freaking fantastic and cheap.

No Canadian pressing Mike? My first Canadian pressing of Dark Side sounds great, better than the original US first press in my opinion.
I dont know if i have overlooked it in the Video but, but you sadly didnt show any of the two East German pressings of Dark Side.
Do you have the East German pressing already?
Half of this was about the record and the other half was Mike big time flexing on all of us. Good shit.
60 copies of one album??!! 😮 Dude, you must love that album.
