Fascinating video Mike. I’ve been huge into digging into the history of Classic Records involvement in the pressing of the original Aenimas and the story you told here is what I had always heard as well. They were the ones who pressed the original Aenima and then formed Classic Records and were going to reissue it themselves on the Classic Records label. The part you left out is that they were also responsible for the 1996/97 Undertow pressings that came out. Also pressed on the Zoo label the Undertow and Aenima pressings have similar sleeve, inner sleeve and label designs and similar matrices. Also those 1996 Undertow pressings sound markedly better than the later Volcano pressings of Undertow. It always stood to reason since they are so similar and sound so good and came out the same year (1996) that Classic Records also did the Undertow pressings.
Wow. You really got the Classic test press of it. Expensive but it'll only go up I think. Awesome album. The fact that it hasn't been reissued is criminal. In my opinion their best and a classic. Imagine if Analogue Productions did a UHQR of this, since they use Classic plates. For £150 I'd still probably buy it. I doubt that this would ever happen though. Let's just hope that if and when it gets reissued, it gets justice. Mastered by Bellman, Gray, Grundman etc.
Mike you should take a 2 hour road-trip to Maynard’s record store, with your copies in tow and see if you can find out what’s up with the reissue situation of Aenima/Tool in general. Let me know how it turns out 😊.
Tool and Maynard are very closed lipped on what's in the pipeline. Now as a Tool fan since 92 and seeing what has been trending on Tools web store they have been selling a bunch of Aenima themed items from t-shirts to hoodies. Maybe this will be the next deluxe vinyl set? I'm really wanting a Lateralus deluxe vinyl set first, since I have the original Aenima first press. But they might be going into reverse and do 10 000 days next. Thanks Mike for this info

Aenema being reissued on vinyl is probably the thing I’ve searched the web for more than anything else. Second, is the 8mm film canister with a NIN logo that I found for sale in a thrift shop in Fort Lauderdale when I was a kid. My dad wouldn’t give me the 15 bucks for it. I still want to know what it was…
Every time he said Aenima I cringed. I know it's trivial, but I did. I have a degree in psychology and the word stems from Carl Jungs archetype, "Anima" ( which is latin for the soul ) and Maynard blended it with Enema for 'purging' as in "soul purging."
Hey Mike. Suggestion for a video. What actually is Mastering? I’ve always wondered, if it’s not Remixing, like what Giles Martin does. What makes different masterings different, besides original source material and the quality of the machines the engineers are using? If it’s not remixing, what choices for the engineers have besides simply boosting the volume? Can you elaborate on what the master mastering engineers are actually doing and the various choices they have? I think many people beside myself might be wondering and you may be able, possibly with the help of a mastering engineer interview, to shed light on the subject. Thanks! Love watching the shows.
I managed to grab a great bootleg from Ghost of Eastside Records years ago. I'll be listening to that until, if and when, it's ever officially reissued. I'm going to be interested to compare the two.
While not my music, yet, this is interesting. I'll have to listen to it very soon. Enjoy! This sounds like one local phone call is worth it to explore a co-reissue....go for it! Good luck!
I know that Tool has a long and storied legal history with their previous label, which may be a factor on why it hasn’t been repressed. They might not own the master tape like they do with their others, which keeps it not in print.
Music wasn’t pushed on me as a kid. So I pretty much had no idea what I liked when I noticed that I ought to get into music if I wanted to fit in with the other high schoolers. The stuff friends played didn’t really grab me all that much. Out of the few things my mom would play, the only album that I really liked was Tracy Chapman. Aenema had just come out and my best friends brother stole a copy from one of those 10 albums for a penny junk mail things that used to show up all the time. As soon as I heard H, I was reminded of Chapman. But it sounded like nothing else I had ever heard. And I found the album art with the moving images that you could fold into place utterly fascinating. I liked it a lot, but it bugged me that I couldn’t understand the words. But then I found lyrics on this tool fan page that were 90% right and finally Maynard himself corrected the errors. Upon listening again with the lyrics in front of me, I became totally infatuated with the album. Just… Such a masterpiece.
I like your open and honest reviews and man o man I'm jealous of your Aenima collection ! Besides from the OG being a bit noisy how is the sound quality?
It would be nice to know the truth about Classics test pressings. There are a lot of variations, many of them in dedicated boxes with edition numbers (hardly a normal test pressing). And with these boxes we can find the same titles with different edition quantities on the actual sticker.
Mike, are the shelves behind you in your videos custom? Moving into a new place and trying to figure out how to arrange everything and 3 wide by 5 tall would be ideal.
I don’t think the lack of a reissue of this has much to do with Maynard. He’s commented several times about the frustrations involved with decisions being made by the band as a whole.
I will never understand Tool’s approach to issuing their stuff on vinyl. The demand for high-quality reissues is through the roof, but they won’t do them. Meanwhile, they finally do a vinyl issue of their latest album, market it as limited edition, price it to match, then press it into oblivion, then press it again in different packaging. It’s clear that someone somewhere understands that Tool vinyl is extremely marketable, so why not repress Aenima or press 10,000 Days?

I have the Classic Records test pressing of Aenima. My copy is still sealed. Bid for my copy on Ebay about 9 years ago, and won the bid for $1,300.
