My Wife told me that she wanted this song played at her funeral as a message to her sons. To this day I haven't been able to listen to this song all the way through without crying. I've never been a person that cries but since I lost her it seems like I cry about everything.

My cousin made me three mixed tapes and put them in a care package to open when I deployed to Afghanistan in January of 2002. This was one of the songs on one of the tapes. Those songs were my outlet for when I was homesick. This brings back so many memories. I was 27 then and am 45 now. It feels like yesterday. I still have those tapes tucked away somewhere.

LOVE this song. Bawled like a baby when I first heard this song so many years ago. Divorced mom raising three kids who are my world and she said everything I hoped for my kids.
Fast-forward some years later and I'm sitting in a chair getting a tattoo, a fairy gently blowing my children's names out into the wind and "I hope you dance" underneath it. My kids were with me. Was a special day.
My son, battling terminal bone cancer, said if he got the go-ahead from his doctor to get another tattoo it would be just two words, "I danced". Ugh, my heart couldn't hold the tears.
He never got the tattoo before he passed away, but we have that memory, and I'm so grateful for it.

This was my mother-son dance at my wedding last year, and this song was perfect because she always encouraged me to put myself back out there even when I felt like giving up. And there were a few times when she put me back out there when I didn’t want to, and I’m super grateful for her having done so

I was in high school when this song came out and I wanted to sing it at graduation, but unfortunately my grandfather passed away about 4 weeks before that. I decided that song was more tied to him and my grandma. How they always wanted to best for their family. This was driven home when we lost my grandmother in 2015. I'd love to sing it again someday, but I can't even get through listening to it without crying. I miss them both so much!

I really like this song, especially how she's saying "When you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance," to in the last chorus, she says "When you get the choice to sit it our or dance, ... Dance!" It's not a hope anymore, she's telling you, just get out there and do it! The thing is, when I hear this song, I really believe she believes her fans and listeners can do it too.

I was a semi-pro dancer from the age of 3 (dancing on my mom's and stepdad band's stage) and even up till about 6 years ago, dancing at my brothers concerts or other friends' bands concerts/gigs. Six years ago I broke both feet, both tibias and fibulas in my legs and tore both achiles tendons! I am now 57 years old. This song hits me hard because dancing was my "go to" when things were not going good. I have rebroke my feet over and over, since the original breaks. I have danced at my cousin's wedding with my feet wrapped even! Dancing to me is head banging, rockin' out, slow dancing, two-stepping, clogging. polkaing, and so much more! I pray God will let my legs and feet heal so I can go full-bore on my dancing again. The only time I can remember crying when I was dancing is if I was slow dancing with someone I loved and those where happy tears. I truly believe God has dancing in Heaven. And I hope for you, that you will dance! You have such a good heart!

  • @zackaryxbinks

I was definitely a teenager when this first came out, and the background of the chorus really tied the whole song together for me. It's subtle and compliments her held notes well, but the lyric of it is so powerful...
"Time is a wheel in constant motion that's always rolling us along.
Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone."
The song is great, but these lines really just make such an emphasis on the message of the song about living without regret.
And yes, the girls in the video are her daughters, if I remember correctly.

July 10,2003. Thursday evening when I got home from work, my wife and I had the deepest conversation in the 13 months we had been married. She played this song for me and said that it anything happened to her for me to find love again. She got sick on Saturday and died Monday night. I'm married now to a woman I love as much as I love Debbie. 15 years into this marriage, I still tell Deanna that I love her every time we talk on the phone.

I can't remember when I first heard this song. I've never saved it on a playlist or had a CD with the song on it. It wasn't played around the house when I was younger. If you asked me in the past about my favorite songs I wouldn't pick this one because I didn't listen to it much or at all. For some reason it just always popped up in my mind randomly throughout my life. My subconscious just kept it floating around my head, I guess. About a month ago I finally downloaded it and now it's on repeat.

The first time I heard "I hope you dance" it was on the Radio and I knew it would be a huge hit! Little did I know I would be playing it as an encouragement for my 3 young daughters at their Mother's Funeral Service 7 or 8 months later, Nov 1, 2000 I played it along with Garth Brooks "The Dance" and Faith Hills "there will come a day".
You...Sushi, remind me of an Allen Jackson song which you actually appear to be living out. "Gone Country"... Another fun one is by Kenny Chesney..." the Good Stuff"

So cool that we have this platform available for us to all broaden each other's horizons. You're a beautiful person and it's so enjoyable to watch your reaction in real time to some beautiful life experiences expressed in lyrical and musical expression. I would just like to say, often in country music, the musicians and the vocals are incredibly understated. They leave so many of their tools in the shed, so as to not drown out the overall sound or message. Case in point, I think that is Vince Gill singing harmony with Allison. Allison, by the way is an incredibly talented bluegrass musician who garners much respect across genres. If you see this, I think you would thoroughly enjoy reacting to, Vince Gill "Just look at us".

The first time I heard this song was at the end if A Family That Preys. Gladys Knight's version will take you there. Makes me think of nt 3 sisters each time so I don't listen to it often. Rest peacefully my angels.

This came out when my dad was dying. It's taken 21 years for me to hear it without busting out in tears.

I used to sing this to my son. I remember it playing during his elementary school “graduation” in 2006 with a slideshow of how much each child has grown. I wasn’t the only mom crying!

The first time I heard this song was in my mothers memorial video, she loved this song and requested it be apart of her funeral video thing , along with Israel Kamakawiwo'ole version of Somewhere over the Rainbow. It was just over a year ago. Thank you for reviewing this song.

I remember listening to this song with my mom. She passed away in 2005 when I was 11. I feel like this song is a message to me from her now.

This is the country music that’s the soundtrack of my childhood. I was raised on George Strait, Garth Brooks, Martina McBride, Faith Hill, Trisha Yearwood, Alan Jackson, Joe Diffie, Alabama... that’s real country. I’m not saying that country music released today isn’t country, but this is the type of music that made country what it is and was. 💜💜💜💜

The lyrics to this song can overwhelm our sense of self through our children. Obviously the author is speaking from life experiences and through the lyrics is exposing a wonderfully observant, wise and loving heart. It was easy to see that you were emotionally impacted TOO SUSHI......which is cool. I LOVE this song for my children.......AND.....for me. And Im an old dude.

I heard this song on the radio when it came out. Went ALL OVER TOWN trying to find the album...only to discover that it hadn't been released yet! This was 2000, and back then we didn't have the entire compendium of the world's knowlege in our pocket.

When Leann Womack came on the scene back in the day, she kicked open the door. Her record was a MEGA hit, she has countless hits, this song is perhaps her best work. Though her catalog is very deep. Definitely worth listening to some more of her songs down the road. Love ya Sushi !!!!!!
