Based on the fact that he can lift and throw a car Yuji is about 18 times stronger than the average person meaning his punch goes from 1125 psi to a whopping 42,450,353 psi when he uses Black Flash. Damn.

@@wafflies8790 The mathematical term for the power of means to multiply something by itself. The term you may remember from school is to Square a number where you multiply it by itself once. So for example 6 to the power of 2 becomes 36. Compared to it just being multiplied by 2.5 (which I also initially thought it was) means Black Flash is absolutely crazy.
Here's a maths example showing the difference:
100 x 2.5 = 250
100^2.5 = 100,000
With how strong Yuuji's base strength is Black Flash catapults it into the stratosphere. The maths is frankly crazy.

It really just complicates things further. Because when raising something to the 2.5, it'll only increase if it's greater than 1. But 1 what? One apple? One Newton? One gigapascal?
Using the 60 psi example in the video, if you convert that to gigapascals and raise it to the 2.5, you'll get 3.4 Pa = 0.00049 psi, which is a 99.999% power decrease, probably less than an infant's punch.
Basically, you have to raise it by an integer quantity, or else the units cannot be meaningful. For example, to calculate the volume of a cube with side length 3, you do (3 m)^3 =27 m^3, and a side length of 0.5 gives you 0.125 m^3. This has physical meaning, but 0.125 m^3 cannot be compared to 0.5 m. But what do you do for a 2.5-sided cube? Have meters to the 2.5? And even then, you can't compare it to meters.
Same here. psi^2.5 cannot be compared to psi. So it's meaningless to talk about a power increase like this.
Basically, this whole 2.5 thing is mathematically impossible to do, and, even if it were an integer power, would be entirely meaningless.
@@NateROCKS112 what are you talking about, okay for example when you apply curse energy to your punches think of them as increasing the mass of your punch. So when yuji punches someone at high power and he adds black flash just think of it as an integer being increased by the power of what ever number above 1, its pretty damn simple the way your saying makes it seem like applying certain integers to a certain power can be impossible. Its not AGAIN your not multiplying it by a decimal your essentially multiplying itself by the power of whatever number.

Considering "Cursed Energy" can sometimes physically harm things, I think it's more appropriate to treat the manifestation of cursed energy as coverting energy into mass, e = mc^2.
Now, what happens when mass moves at speeds close to the speed of light? You get relativistic effects - either time dilation or space contraction.
Producing mass within 1 trillionth of a second is probably akin to forcing matter to move at the speed of light - so space contracts and your fist hits the target much earlier - the subsequent deceleration also suddenly forces space to un-contract, causing a much larger explosion.

Itadori's first black flash didn't make contact with Hanami and it destroyed its roots and its hand, but the other black flashes only made Hanami bleed didn't even punch a limb off
Hella late but in an authors note it’s stated that Hanami is ridiculously tanky compared to the other disaster curses so much so that if it would have been Jogo tanking Yuji’s consecutive black flashes he would’ve died

There is a technique literally called "Devil Trigger Distortion" in Devil May Cry game series, which needs you to activate a special Devil Trigger mode just after the attack lands, like on the next frame or something, so that the game counts that same attack twice and multiplies damage of non-devil attack by the damage of the Devil Trigger attack. Multi-hit attacks can even benefit from multiple uses, when you switch between normal and Devil Trigger mode back and forth.
This is only in DMC4.
Sin Devil Trigger Dante Quadruple S also does this but you have a larger window to activate and deactivate and need SSS rank on it too

The black flash can also be made stronger by the amount of cursed energy used at the moment. Cursed energy starts at a 2 as a minimum (exponents bs, stuff), meaning that in addition to increase by the power of 2.5, the physical power of the user, the amount of cursed energy needs to be taken into account- it could be the bare minimum 2, or 10, or 1000 (if you're Gojo, and feel like breaking a continent).
So it's physical strength+X amount of cursed energy used ^2.5= big ass punch

Thams for explaining the 2.5 thing. I could never rap my head around why a 2.5x power boost was ever good, but now I get that it's actually raised to. A punch raised the power of 2.5, a good example of how broken this is is how fast a car is times itself 2.5 times. It could makes normal person lift a car with ease. Now I get where all the hype about it is.

Gojo is actually confirmed to have experienced the black flash more times than the ones we've seen so far, since in the official fan book published on the 4th of March 2021 "2 years before chapter 232, where his first ON SCREEN black flash happens" it was stated he has experienced it, on top of that, in the latest chapter "256", Gojo himself states that while Nanami holds the record for "most black flashes in a row", Gojo holds the record for "most black flashes in total", although it's unknown precisely how many times he has landed one besides the ones we've seen "up to chapter 257".
*Yuta Okkotsu's black flash is anime only, in the Jjk0 manga it was a regular CE infused punch, although, it is still considered canon regardless, since black flash wasn't a thing when Jjk0 was written, and Gege Akutami is highly involved with the realization of the anime adaptation.*

I feel that Yuji's Lag definitely helps with black flash. Being able to strike with lag helps with his timing, I.E: he can activate his divergent fist a few seconds before the dtrike allowing him to bridge hit that 0.00001 second barrier needed for a black flash.
The closest comparison would be the way in which Sakura can create a super strong impact in a fraction of a second using chakra control
Quick question, were there misinterpretations in the translations? I just saw the episode, and I seem to remember it increases power to the power of 2.5, not a 2.5 times multiplier, and needs the cursed energy to be within a millionth, not a trillionth.
the anime itself as in the japanese voice acting accurately stated that it was to the power of 2.5 but the crunchyroll translation fucked it up

It's not necessary for a body part specifically to make contact with the opponent for a black flash to occur, it just has to be something you imbue with your cursed energy, for instance, Nobara landed a black flash on Kechizu with one of her CE imbued nails, or Nanami in Jjk0, he landed a series of black flashes with that short blunt sword he uses. In short, it doesn't have to be a punch or a kick, hypothetically, anything you imbue with your CE can result in a black flash if the right conditions are met.

it reminds me of Sekiro, you have to parry at the last second possible for a powerful blow to your enemies stance, for black flash you have to output cursed energy at the very last possible microsecond. if you do it wrong you end up just hitting them with a normal ass punch doing nothing and most likely dying. very high risk high reward

I'm caught up the manga but i'm surprised no one made a summon that do black flashes since their isn't much going on in their head other than the order they have meaning if someone with the knowledge dedicated the time they could make something like a shikigami or robot to create consistent black flashes.
I remembered somewhere in the depths of the net that someone said JoJo characters let alone their stands, cant be allowed in the jjk verse cuz stand/spirit energy translated to a literal physical embodiment of cursed energy would make them literally just black flash machine guns and that would just make a special grade sorcerer dead in just 10 punches
Not really. Black Flash is basically Divergent Fist but way faster. It isn't simply punching with one fast cursed energy punch. Instead, it's more like trying to delay your cursed energy to hit at the exact timing of a trillionth of a second after your punch connects. This would allow you to blast your cursed energy with an explosive power. Don't get me wrong, JoJo characters would still demolish most cursed spirits but it won't be a black flash machine gun.
I can how this works in reality that micro second is extremely short distance to unleash cursed energy point blank combined with the kinetic force from the punch itself
So I did some research and the low-ball average for heavyweight boxers is 1200 PSI and since he isn't the strongest puncher in the show I used that and he's sitting at ~49.9 Million PSI, so ya, it might sting a bit

Don’t forget during Nobara Kugisaki and Yuji Itadori's battle against Eso and Kechizu, both Nobara and Yuji managed to land a dual blow of Black Flashes to the curse-human hybrids.
It was more apparent in the manga because it had the panel focused solely on the duo, with the Text alongside both of them striking a pose. I feel like some anime watchers picking up on nobara doing it too

"To the power of" is a bit weird. If you use the metric system, you can measure the pressure of a punch in pascals or milipascals, where pascal = 1000 * milipascal. So, if the power of our punch was a miniscule 1 pascal, a black flash would still be 1 pascal. However, if you measure in milipascals, that would be 1000 normally and 31 622 776,6 with a black flash, which is about 31 622,7 pascal. The smaller the units you use, the more power you get
Hey! I like your thinking (coming from a fellow math nerd) but you actually forgot to square the units along with your calculations. You’ll find that 1 Pa squared and 1000 mPa squared are actually the same, I solved it below if you wanted to look.
1 Pa=1000 mPa
(1 Pa)^2.5= 1 Pa^2.5
(1000 mPa)^2.5= 31,622,776.6 mPa^2.5
Now solving that they’re the same below,
31,622,776.6 mPa^2.5 * (1 Pa/1000 mPa)^2.5= 1 Pa^2.5

@@sylph4252 not sure why that wouldn’t work, if you square a value of something by law you have to square the units. It’s the same concept as multiplying length and width to get area. Each length is in units of meters and when you multiply them to get area you get meters^2. Same thing for Volume ie. meters^3. Doesn’t matter if the units is in pressure or not.

The funny thing about "raised to the power of 2.5x" is that it implies a unit by which the attack's force is multiplied. Is this some arbitrary unit? Should it be used to measure strength? It would be a hard unit to measure, since no one can do Black Flash consistently, but you could probably approximate it with enough math.

It’s immediately after a physical hit. The reason why divergent fist is strong is the same reason black flash is strong but on a different scale. Gege likens the mechanics of black flash to potential energy that is released with kinetic energy. Divergent fist is less powerful than black flash because most of the kinetic energy is spent (I.e. his fist is already following through) by the time the curse energy is activated, whereas with black flash nearly all of the kinetic energy goes into fuelling the cursed energy.
Okay there's one aspect about black flash that I'm a little confused on. In the manga it says that there is not a single jujutsu sorcerer who can use black flash at will. So does that mean that part of being able to successfully accomplish the technique is to be lucky and that just some can do it and some can't?
Yeah it's pretty much luck, nobody can choose to do it but, they can constantly try
no one can do it at will but those who are extremely talented with a deep understanding and feel for manipulating cursed energy have a much higher chance of pulling it off
the concept is similar to like when an extremely talented and skilled basketball superstar catches fire and goes into the “zone” where they’re extremely locked in and can’t seem to miss a shot for a period of time

I thought that the statement implied the exponential increase of force was only for the initial hit of black flash and it wasn't a permanent state boost for physical strength only a boost in cursed energy manipulation or was it just worded weirdly in the translation ?
From what I understand, the move black flash itself raises your base physical strength's power to the power of 2.5. The 2.5 thing isn't permanent but as a consequence of pulling the move off you gain a greater grasp of how to control your cursed energy and so you get stronger. How much stronger is smth idk but I doubt base form Yuji's strength is raised to the power of 2.5 now.

I love the concept of black flash and its excution in the anime however I think the decision to make Yuji successfully excutes one mere minutes after it's first mentioned to him (and even worse to us the audience) THEN have him pull off the ungodly feat of doing 4 in a row literally the world record in the same episode severely undermines its impact. What confuses me the most is that right after that fight the anime starts using blackflash in perfect moderation like it should've been. Even Yuji stops doing it so consistently. It's such a weird mistake to do.
I agree with you, imo , it was a way to power up Yuji and to keep strong enough relative to the rest of the cast. With the introduction of Todo, Hanami, and everyone else relevant that had yet to have screen time up to that point , Yuji was falling behind the rest of the cast so Gege needed a quick way to power him up. It was a bit of an asspull but it was a quick and tolerable way to take advantage of Yuji’s latent potential.

Todo told him to let cursed energy flow naturally and not allow it to flow only when he needs. He was constraining his flow earlier with Nanami, that was causing the lag

Given that Yuuji has the physical strength of a world class athlete, you can kinda sorta estimate the force that would be displayed by his black flash as opposed to a regular person's.
Francis Ngannou has the strongest punch in recorded human history at about 96 horse power. He has a much larger frame and his arms would weigh more than Yuuji's, so if you assume they can punch with about the same velocity, Ngannou would have a slightly stronger punch. Let's say Yuuji can get out 90 horse power. Raise this to the 2.5 and you get over 76,000 horse power. I tried to Google something for comparison and closest thing I got was a smaller hybrid rocket used for rocket cars. So yeah, conservatively estimating, Yuuji's black flash can be seen as the force of a rocket car at top speed putting out max thrust.
For raising stuff to the 2.5, it depends on how you measure it, since there's no such thing as Newtons to the 2.5, so dimensional analysis fails there. Because anything less than 1 units would actually observe a _decrease._
Using your example, 60 psi = 410000 Pa = 0.00041 GPa.
Thus, the Black Flash power, using pressure as a quantity and GPa as a unit, is (0.00041)^2.5 GPa = 3.4 Pa = 0.00049 psi. This is a 99.999% decrease in "power."
Additionally, using force as a unit of measurement is more accurate than pressure, which is force per unit area, since area of the punch remains constant. But that's not an issue with the series, just your attempt at illustrating a fundamentally flawed plot point.

Something people with no cursed energy just simply can't do.
