- Ok, so maybe you don't need to throw your looper pedal AWAY, but I definitely think there's a better way to do it. Here's my method for looping, and remember - if you'd like another video that's more of a How-To for this particular method, let me know in the comments section!

I have a home studio, have a band, but want to know how I can play solo shows with more depth than just the guitar vocals. I can't quite slap the bass like you can but I look forward to experimenting!!! I agree that the basic loop pedal can feel restricting, and with this function you're recording some pretty sick jams that can then be manipulated further post gig and exported as a piece for soundcloud or what have you. Great stuff!!! 👍

I understand, my looper built in my boss 800 digital 6 track rec, studio doesn't do it in time in the way I want it ,so I got the rc 505 looper.

@@ozoneswiftak yeah I’m cracking up a few minutes into it instead of doing the drum pattern on my bass, Yeah let’s add in a drum machine...and it looks like a sequencer is coming, and I see a keyboard...heck let’s just add a little B3...Instead of simulating Leslie with a Cheap trem or chorus pedal and my volume, let’s just add in a little real 122 cabinet, It’s solid mahogany but it’s vintage so the wood is lighter.

EXACTLY!!! I'm glad he has so much expendable cash to throw around on all that equipment and a laptop that might crash to the floor or get stolen whilst loading gear in or out of the venue but I find using two loopers with different features in tandem gives me most of the flexibility I require without laptop anxiety. One above, one below solves the tweaking access problem. Granted, he has worlds of flexibility with all of that but I'm only out a couple of hundred bucks and have more than basic capabilities, hands and floor control, undo and redo on the fly, loop dispersal control ( Ditto4x and EH 25,000), effects, and NO latency.

My looper pedal puts the control of my looping at my FEET, where I can control it without taking my hands off my instrument... end of discussion.

they make controller pedals to be used with these programs that are much much cheaper than say a boss 500 or whatever its called. if you are trying to live loop multi instruments at a time this is easily the best way.

Best money I ever spent.
You can adjust individual track volumes hands-free, and you can have up to 6 tracks per song part, and 6 song parts.

I have basically this same setup. I've bought it 1 piece at a time off of Craigslist over the last 6 months. Everything is used but I only spent 600$ total. It was very affordable when split up over time. Totally worth it. Most of my gear was basically brand new from kids who wanted to be rappers but couldn't figure out how to use the gear so they sold it to me way cheap lol
Looper pedal or not, this is something else. Comparing these two in which one is better all in all is like comparing looping to having things played with a live band.
It's just a different way of creating music and they shouldn't really be compared or tale the other one out.

I would be interested in a video or even series on this(because you could easily do a series on performing with Ableton Live with things like syncing with a live drummer, midi pedals, audio routing, midi mapping, what setup would be right for you, ect.). I use Ableton as well and am always looking at other people's live set up/workflows and a video detailing the setup/workflow centered around the bass would be very useful.

Boss rc-505 is pretty versatile. Plus with a behringer fcb1010 you can can control it really well with your feet and sill have the tabs at your hands to mix the different tracks!
The entirety of the first demonstration could be done on an RC505. Granted, you have more options with a laptop, but to me, a mixer and an RC505 with a footswitch offers me more than enough freedom to jam in intricate ways.

I get what you're saying, but you can do with ableton tons of things that no loop pedal will ever allow, like chaining effects and printing them on a loop and shifting as you go, or creating MIDI triggers that do not necessitate you to press record and stop or to even quantize anything. A pedal is a lot more handy for most people and this stuff takes months to figure out at least. But Ableton is a lot more powerful than any hardware because it's expandable and most people haven't even scratched the surface of it. It can output multitrack to your ethernet or USB port for goodness sake

You just saved me a splurge on things I don't even need. I was going to get an amp and a new mic and a whole bunch of stupid gear when my homebase has always been studio recording. I feel silly for not thinking of looping using studio software, but I'm so glad I found your video hours before purchasing tonnes of stuff that would never have ended up being used. I felt so overwhelmed with the loop tech and hated the lack of control (and how hard it would be for me to use specific sounds already loaded into Ableton). Thanks for changing my trajectory!

This is great! When I started playing bass in the 70s none of this was available. You brought a bass and a huge ass amp and joined a band. The amps were impossible to transport without help. Now you can get a much lighter amp and with the digital technology a bassist can actually perform solo. Victor Wooten actually pioneered this playing a coffee bar in Nashville. Id love to do open mics one day by myself with my fretless.

I'd just like to say, I use this method too and it's great for high paying gigs, but for little picnics or cafes or pubs, the looper pedal is SO MUCH easier to take around and just feels safer.

The idea of a compact pedal is that it is compact. Minimalizing thw size of a rig and cost is very important.

This kind of setup is something I've always wanted to try and out and possibly master, for as I feel like it's probably a really fun and interesting avenue to expand my knowledge, growth, and understanding as a musician. Considering the potential for endless possibilities in regards to creativity, I find that's it's likely to be a great way to get over those troublesome feelings of plateauing or lack of progression, that tend to arise every now and again when inspiration may be a bit scarce at that given moment in time, while also simultaneously making practice time more fun and unique. As a mostly self taught bassist, who's minimal gear comprises of a small amplifier, a bass guitar of course, and just a single distortion pedal, having a similar set up with a versatility such as this, would allow someone like myself to have the capability to find new inspiration and ideas that would aid in my learning and creation of music, thanks to the potential increase of tools at my disposal to create with. Sadly, I'm still lacking the equipment and allocated funds for said gear, however any knowledge and insight is always welcome, especially when the price is simply one's investment of time towards the topic.

The whole shtick of the looper pedal is the ability to do everything with just one instrument. It's an expression thing. A cheap setup for this would run you like 500$

Dude learn to add up. This is basic widely available consumer recording equipment. The audio interface, triggers and keys etc are only hundreds, which is completely within grasp of any musician interested in taking looping further.

Yeah, I would like to know more detail. I have a roland fp90x and a pretty powerful windows operating laptop rtx graphics card and a lot of ram. Do I need to throw it out and start over? I was thinking of using the percussion features of my fp90x, but I'm also considering getting a drum pad w/ mini keyboard. I want to hook up an acoustic guitar and run some effects thru it. My fp90x has a built-in mic connection. The speakers on my fp90x are pretty powerful. Should I be considering monitors instead?
I am new to ableton and trying to learn. So far, I have used a boss RC 300. The thing I like with that set up is that I can determine the tempo with the first track that I loop and then build on that with other tracks that sync to the first one. What I'm trying to figure out now is if I can do something similar with ableton instead of playing along with a click from the beginning

I really love my one stop Electro - Harmonix Looper pedal 360. Does all I need it to do for only $150. If I want to work with a set up like Jayme Lewis is using, I'll stay home and work in my studio.
great video i get where your coming from and this video was made in 2018 so its slightly outdated in my opinion because there are now loop pedals like the boss rc 600 and the looperboard out now which gives u most of these things like tempo and fx
yeah, loopers are evolving and some of the described limitations are being eliminated with new features. It's WAY easier to bring a looper than a laptop, ableton and all the gear to set this up. His method is super clean but loopers are growing and will catch up.

On my RC300 loop station I can add reverb till my heart's content
Your argument that you don't need a loop pedal is the same argument as analog Vs digital.
I run my drum sampler in to my looper.
I run multiple pedal effects to my looper.
Every option you presented here is do able with a loop pedal.
Also my hands are free for which ever of the multiple instruments I'm using.
You can also midi map anything on the RC300 using .... You guessed it, more pedals.. doesn't have to be a pedal either it could be a midi controller.

You can’t sync geooveboxes as master to roland loopers (or almost is the most accepted drawback of these) so you can’t do “everything” the way he points. Said that I wil go the iPhone route instead the full mac…
Just one thing I'd like to know is: how to you connect your audio chann to your amp? Reamp box, effects loop or just go in to the input?
In this case it's going in/out through the fx loop via the Presonus Studio 26's outputs. In Ableton I set everything to go out of Output 4 and then connect to my fx loop accordingly. I'll explain that in more detail in the next few videos as well so stay tuned Franz!
I'm just learning about playing live and what essentials you'd need. I'm not sure what i should get as a beginner but the vid was very informative
Honestly, I have found, through over fifty years of playing in front of live audiences, that the only ones that care about looping are other musicians. Most people couldn't care less, especially if you are playing covers. If the song is familiar the audience fills in the other instruments with their minds. Better to have great technique and a good voice.
This sounds a awful lot like the "You don't need good gear, tone is in the fingers!" argument and to be honest, it doesn't really hold water. For the most part, looper pedals are not essential for stage musicians but they are cheap enough to be a great solution to the problem of not always having that second guitarist to lay down a basic chord progression or for simply adding other textures via more specialized equipment or effects. It may not be a useful thing for your specific needs as an individual but there are a lot of successful bands and guitarists that lean pretty heavily on loopers and no amount of technique will allow them to do what they do without a looper.
@@startrekmike Let's say you loop the intro to a song and it's the same as the verses. Great. Now you get to the chorus and that has a completely different chord structure. So you have to stop the loop and voila, the sound just drops out from the full, lush sound you just had to, well, a lot less full and lush, and just when you want the chorus to be MORE full and lush. Then we get to the bridge which is a whole 'nother deal. I've seen this with a lot of solo artists. It may sound dangerously close to Karaoke but why not just pre-record the basic layouts of the songs on, say, your smart phone or iPad and play that back? You could record entire backing tracks! The advantage would be that you could concentrate on your singing and playing and not have to worry about when to stomp on that looper pedal. I know, there are newer pedals that loop realistic bass and drums but what if the song has a signature lick, drum part or bass line and the pedal cannot replicate it? For a lot of us who do cover tunes there is such a wide variety of chord patterns and voicings and changes throughout the songs that I don't think a looper is helpful. Now, if you're one of the artists that records a pattern on a looper and then just builds on that one pattern as you endlessly vamp over it then yeah, it's a great tool. But even then, from what I've witnessed, the first two or three times it's done the audience goes "wow, that's so cool" and after that there mostly "OK, that's a gimmick". OK, I suppose I'm old school but I'd rather play music than play with toys.

I have to agree with you,Mr Dawson I have been playing music for over 45 years. I have more than a few gigs that I have done over the years. These kids don't get and don't want to understand what we're talking about. They have been mass-marketed into believing that the more s*** you have the better you will sound. I kept thinking to myself as I was watching this guy performing his "looping", If my Bass player had to fiddle around that much with his gear while we were killing it on stage, I WOULD HAVE FIRED HIS ASS!.... Unless these kids are out there making money playing music for a living, ain't no way they're going to understand what you're talking about.... ✌️ Peace.
I actually very much agree, but i do use a looper pedal for simple accompaniment.
We have noticeable latency mainly because we are using a PC whose software is not made for real-time processing. However, to compensate for processing overload, we increase the size of the buffer so that we can do the work when the CPU is free again. However, the buffer causes a delay. If we had dedicated hardware and software for signal processing, we could make the buffers very small such that delays could not be noticed anymore. In my opinion, a PC or Mac is not made for looping. Instead, we should use dedicated hardware, like a looper pedal or the RC 505, RC 600 ....
Hey, hello! cool explanation! As you said I already run all the necessary stuff: guitars, usb audio device, Mac, logic, mic and so on, so... I'm here just to ask you how you exactly settle the session down. Could you please explain it in an easy step by step process? Or maybe is not necessary, I mean, you just plug everything in your usb device and you decide the number of bars for the loop and you just go, is it right? But the thing I don't get is that with, for example, logic, if I want to loop something, I have to select a channel, record it, stop it (otherwise I will loop again over the same track), move to another channel/track, record it, and so on... quite hard to do it fast and properly... I suppose I've lost a step of your method of looping... isn't it? please could you clarify it? because I really like the way you loop, but still didn't get it! Thaaaanks!

You can get reverb and other stuff to the loop with a pedal before the looper to add delay reverb after the fact .. it’s a bit much but is possible..🤷♂️

With my RC-300 and Korg ESX 1 I can do all that. I can tweak effects for synth,keys,and drums on the ESX 1 effects parameters live. I have the ESX on a stand close to my left hand and RC-300 on the floor. And my TC Helicon running through the ESX instrument in jack. "3 devices" without plugin devices, laptop and all the extras. Most of the time I don't use my TC Helicon I can just use basic vocal effects in the RC-300. So... "2 devices!"
I've been following thus channel for a while and it's been helping me out so much! I'm using Ableton for live looping guitars, bass, synthesizer and various other instruments. I'm using my Apollo twin and using my MIDI footswitch for easy accessibility and looping. My question is how can I get the best possible sound when I plug in through my PA? Should I be routing my instruments two different outputs? Should I use multiple computers? Should I get a DIY rig? Should I also be playing with my amps?Got any suggestions here for my output sound?
Rc-505 loop station by boss can do all those things, and is a push button hands on feet free model, if that:s what you're into.

You're so awesome! I've been doing a lot of research trying to figure out how I can achieve something like this just to compose and play multiple instruments at home by myself. I'm only going to say this in a teasing way but... Looper pedal ($99-$499) v.s. your rig set up $7,999 😂 Just getting a new mac + Logic let's say will already put me at $1,300. If I can do this with Garage Band and just a regular Audio interface... Hold off on a mixer and drum machine lol

Hey Jamie. I Love messing around with looping, but as I can’t move my legs i have trouble with timing as I have to use my hand whilst playing. Is there any way to automatically start and end a loop simply by starting to play. (Hope this makes sense).
Starting to play, no. But in this case I had it set so that it gave me a 4-beat count in, and then every loop began recording at once. All I had to do was play and it set itself to overdub until I turned that function off. It's perfectly automate-able for your situation. Stay tuned and I'll make some more videos on the subject for sure!
There are looper pedals that start recording when you start playing, like the NUX loop core deluxe

I can appreciate what you're creating with all those tools. My only gripe is, I played in a band where many of the instrument tracks were prerecorded in ableton. We played a wedding and the computer crashed right before the ceremony. Fortunately, we were a full band, but if it was a solo looping gig, it would have been a catastrophe
That happens also with standalone gear (includding rc) so getting a B-plan is always a must. You learnt by the hard way…
That’s why if you’re in a serious looping project you’d have a backup at all times connected to your cloud and ready to go with your sessions!!

It would be cool to see ways to integrate 2nd and 3rd rythms as in a chorus, bridge etc. I am sure you can just mute and start a new clip but im looking for alternatives.
The typical 'pedal looper' guy has lots of other gear besides just a single looper pedal. I use the JamMan Solo XT ecosystem. I can have as many channels as I want (of course for about $70 for each additional JamMan Express I want to add), I have keyboards, drum machines and yes, a solid mixer. I can run each pedal output to the mixer, giving me the same control you mention was NOT available, I can have several FX send/receives with various pedals (reverb, chorus, delay, etc.), so what am I missing? I can have my various loops set to different lengths and nothing will be out of sync in my system either.
If we agree that we both have keyboard, drums machine, mixer, etc. that is common to both setups, it boils down to the cost of a good laptop and software vs various FX pedals and several looper pedals that sync to each other. I'm more of a hardware musician when it comes to live performance. At least get your facts straight about the looper tech that has been around for over 10 years already.
I'm actually here for the Ableton demo. Even though I don't think it's a better way to do it... It's just a different way to do it. Looper pedals have much much less friction... It's easy to pick up a guitar and get jamming right away. You just have to plug the cable in.
I wanna learn how to do it in Ableton because if I already have my PC running, some of the friction is gone and new DAW skills are nice to have
(I see this video was made in 2018 at which point in time it was brilliant +made a bit more sense..) now in 2022.. A 6 track boss RC600 on the floor with a small midi controller on a stand does the same thing with less stuff. Also the RC505mk2 on a table with a Nektar pacer controller on the floor is another 5 track option, BUT there probably still are some other benefits to using a computer..

Is this possible to do on Studio One? I know you can record several takes in a loop, but I can't figure out how to create a loop that keeps playing and keeps adding more sound to the track every time.
A pedal has less lag, you plugin your laptop with all the space it requires with the possibility of a greater lag. A looper pedal is the first pedal anyone should get.
Yep. I've been working on solo acoustic material and began building out an ableton rig. The biggest problem I have after latency is the loss in sound quality. I have a Taylor T5..acoustic sounds are great direct to amp, it has body and richness.. as soon as it hits those AD converters all the life is gone.
