    I just started using the base Mac Mini and I love this thing. I wanted the 16gb, but I wanted to try it first and so far, not a single issue. My opinion is that no machine should ever be released with less than 16gb in the future. I just also purchased a late 2012 MacBook Pro for $100 at an auction and upgraded it with an SSD and 16gb of ram and this thing is awesome! Runs Xcode and Final Cut like a dream... I use it every day, along with my base Mini. The Mini has the most potential of all of the Macs in a stationary office setting, and so I hope they focus on that potential and make it rock!

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад +1

      Yes! This thing does have great potential in an office setting. This was the machine I had transitioned to in my other business, although I own that company so it was easy for me to make that decision, but it did take quite a bit of adapting software because this was back in 2009…but so much easier now.
      Awesome you’re rocking with the Mini.

    Great video. The plexiglass top is supposed to finally address the Bluetooth issues. TECHNICALLY, the Mac Mini is due for both the Pro/Max chips AND the M2. I agree the lineup will still include the 2020 M1, but I believe we’ll also get the overdue M1 Pro/Max chip and Apple will introduce the first “M2” chip based on the A15, with the Mac mini.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад +1

      I’m really curious to see if there’s any performance difference in the mini with these Pro and Max chips, but honestly I’m thinking not. Apple may let the thermals ride a little higher, or rather have the fan manage this a little better and give us a higher RPM? 🤷‍♂️
      Either way though, I’m excited to test. Love the mini.
      Great to have you here BTW.

      @@KevinRossRN glad to be here. I think Apple will find a specific way to showcase the Pro/Max chip in the Mini. Battery life and efficiency for the MacBooks and the Mini form factor will bring SOMETHING unique to appeal to the desktop fans.

    • @KevinRossRN

      Let’s hope we get something that really sets this thing apart, although as far as M1 it was certainly a massive leap from previous builds because the mini was never really marketed for “power.”

    Other than improving the port layout I'm fine with the design. The current M1 Mac Mini is small enough, and I'd be fine if they cubed it and made it larger.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, I think others may have wanted that cube because it may have meant that there would be some upgradeable components. But I too am fine with the current design.

    The current mini chassis was kept because Amazon AWS didn't want to buy different size racks. The new Mac mini will be half the height because two Mac minis will fit in the same rack. The plastic case has nothing to do with Bluetooth, whatsoever. Bluetooth sucks because the module is from Broadcom, and it's terrible. The new plastic top comes off so Amazon can attach, well, that's a secret.

    Please Apple!!! Stop with the fascination for thin!!!
    NOBODY cares about thin for a machine that is a desktop.
    Especially since Apple sacrifices functionality for shaving off a few angstroms.
    I pray they keep the headphone jack and have backwards compatible USB ports (A/B/newer) and also keep the HDMI that is also backwards compatible. And keep it DIY for upgrades. Keep the M1 Mac Mini form factor and just upgrade the guts.

    I'm looking forward to your review on the new Mac Studio that was recently announced. Its way overkill for me in terms of performance and price. I would be happy with a Mac Mini but I'd prefer a 27' iMac with M SoC which I hope Apple will release in the future. I'm still using an old 2011 27" iMac that was upgraded with a 500 GB 860 EVO.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад +1

      Yeah that Mac studio is overkill for all of us. But why not, right!? 😀
      If the studio had come out before the latest MBPs it would have killed those sales.

    • @dproulx222
      @dproulx222 2 года назад

      @@KevinRossRNYou are correct that the Mac Studio would have killed the Mac Mini sales had it been released first. The Mac Mini with M1 SoC is more than adequate for 98% of the population.
      Everyone is thankful for improved performance per watt, more CPU and GPU cores but I suspect for the vast majority of users all these extra cores will serve more as a bragging right than actual utility in people's workflows.
      When my 2011 iMac eventually kicks the bucket I'll upgrade to whichever M series SoC offers the lowest price to performance ratio.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад

      Yeah, I think some might be underwhelmed by the fact that we’re just seeing M1 put into all of these devices now, and so what. Big deal 🤷‍♂️
      However these chips are just phenomenal per watt. That’s the take home message here. They could practically be powered by a potato…not really of course, but I’m just constantly amazed at the performance when compared to the two gaming PCs we have. I mean, gaming isn’t the target, but just the point of all this potential in such a small footprint is really something I’m looking forward to for years to come.

  • @goobfilmcast4239

    ...short answer..NO. The Mini is already a "Mini-malist" design. I'd like to see Apple leverage the already paid for R&D and manufacturing costs of the current form-factor (which is a HUGE and CAVERNOUS space for future M-series SoCs) and offer faster, less expensive desktops. GO for market share !!!....to do that Apple Needs a low-cost, high performance desktop. I have no need to "look" at my M1 Mini....it is mounted to the back of the 43" 4K TV I use as a monitor..... save the "beauty treatment" (and price bumps) for the upcoming iMac, Macbook and Mac Pro models

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад

      And there you have it. I agree. I mean honestly we could have enough space to fit a SATA drive in there for internal archiving while the NVMe handles the workflow.

  • @joseabraham777

    I was a fan of the ultra thin apple devices… and i was wrong, I want apple to follow the most important Dieter Rams principle: Function over form, if apple found the way to make this device thinner is ok but if not, we could return to the dark era that begin with the 13 inch MBP

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, I think at first we were all digging the smaller footprint…not all, but many. However, when function caused us to hit a ceiling much quicker, then it didn’t matter at that point.
      There’s a lot of possibilities with these new chips, but with more demand comes the need to balance that power and heat.

  • @wingsley
    @wingsley 2 года назад

    The world definitely has room for (and demand for) both a base M1 (or M2) Mac Mini and a higher-grade M1Pro (and M1Max) Mac Mini "Pro". I just hope they don't get any more expensive than what's anticipated.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад

      Yeah the expense would definitely lose quite a bit of their customer base, which is why I think the M1 sticks around, but then you have that price point of the iMac to contend with as a “consumer” level device.
      But there’s just so many things that can be done with that mini.

    I don't think you know what a decade means.
    :p
    As for the new Mac Mini...I have no idea what size it will be. I haven't seen anything to convince me one way or another. It might even be the same size.
    What I would like to see is COLORS. I would just love to see several color options, bright, IN YOUR FACE colors instead of the usual silver-ish color.
    Not that I will be able to afford any of them, Apple doesn't have an Apple store here, only "official distributors" , not even their own e-shop. So not only we have to pay extra because we are not in the USA (fair enough), but there is an extra at least 30% price gauging from the sellers, total price and each upgrade, reaching even 50%. Yes, there is a good chance the official distributors (or whatever they are called) make higher profit per mac than Apple.
    Which of course means far fewer units sold here (Greece) than they would be otherwise. So I am still with my 2012 Mac Mini.
    Anyway, I am sure Apple will have something good released soon enough.
    COLORS!

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 года назад +1

      Ha! Let’s hope the coming years don’t feel like a decade like the past couple years have felt. 😉
      Colors would be interesting. I didn’t really consider that, but it would certainly make these more of a center piece.
      And what I think is also something that should be addressed is that here in the states we do have that easier access to these newer devices while in other countries the wait times are longer and often times paying more.
      A friend and fellow RUclips creator just got his M1 Max he ordered last year 🤷‍♂️
      Makes me think the M1 will still sell for awhile since it’s more widely available.

      @@KevinRossRN I like that you are quick. One of the reasons I subbed months ago. The M1 would be nice to see in a low tier Mini and/or Air with even lower price, when the Max/Pro and M2 spread out more.

      Sorry, I’m full of the dad jokes. Glad to have you here, seriously. And yes, I could see the M1 hanging on a little longer and then when these M2 chips come in, holy smokes the possibilities here.
      Apple will still have their hands full on trying to streamline their SKUs a bit, and as much as I love the Air, I’m curious to see if they end up dropping that name and just going back to MacBook.

    Yeah my 16gb m1 mini is a great machine! ..Anything else would just be overkill for me ...I mean this would have been a home run machine if they had a pcie slot but obviously apple purposely kept that out along with giving us a underwhelming USB C port that doesn't play well with USB c drives ..
