Just did this to my GBA yesterday with the funny playing kit. It looks amazing. Thanks for the great tutorials and for the great work you all do at Handheld Legend.
I did this a year or two ago but ran into some issues that I ended up abandoning but still want to get to the bottom of. With this, you're supposed to hold the select button and then press L or R to adjust screen brightness. Mine does it, but for some reason, the screen dims one stage upon pressing down the select button. It can be worked around but it is annoying. The other issue... the L button doesn't work. 😮💨 Edit: I wasn't sure where this comment was, but the like brought me back to it lol thanks! The problem was that when I assembled the gba, the ips wire that connected to L was being crushed by the case itself where the screw at that same corner fastened together. When I freed the wire everything worked perfectly. If anyone has the issue I described initially, make sure the wires are not being crushed by the case!
Hey just wanted to ask if you’re still here? I have this same issue. My problem is the select will make the brightness go up and L will make it go down but I can’t figure out why it will go down even if I’m not holding select. I’m just super confused. Edit: you were 100000% correct about the wires not being caught on the shell. It’s fixed!
@BladeReynolds Hm. All that comes to mind is to check and make sure that the solders are only connected to the spots they are intended. If any two spots are linked because the solder is touching two solder points, it can cause issues. This, and of course, making sure the wires don't have interference, like the case crushing down on a wire.
Hey there - we followed your guide accordingly and the screen worked fine for 90 seconds, but suddenly it turned off and there's no sound or images, but the power is still going. I tried to look around and the suspicions are either weak soldering and faulty ribbon cable. As I'm not smart on electronics, how do I exactly know if the cable is faulty?
i installed mine and the top of the console doesn't fit together properly :( not so much that it can't be played but it's open a bit and it's annoying.
@@Leon___2 cant wait until my next payment! gonna get me a transparent red shell! and that screen! i have surgery in about a year. not allowed phone/Switch in theatre or recovery room. But I am allowed a GameBoy Advance. A couple of hours of playing Zelda on a red GBA while I recover from surgery, you bet!
After installing my hispeedido v2 ips kit the screen will randomly freeze on me for seemingly no reason and will be fine upon a restart does anyone have any insight?
I am very late, you want solder wire (a spool of which will last you forever), a soldering iron (don't touch the metal as it's PRETTY HOT, and don't have prolonged contact with the GBA board since it'll burn and ruin everything), a well-ventilated area to work with and if you've got poor eyesight and need to be close to what you're soldering to see, you should wear safety glasses since the fumes are mildly irritating. The thing he applied earlier is called flux and it helps solder flow easily, it's not 100% necessary. My father has soldered most of his life and he also recommends a sponge to wipe off some of the gunk that accumulates on the edge of the solder.
My screen changes display ratio when I touch the L and R shoulders. My gba also won't read certain games after installing the screen, the games will work in my gbc and dmg.
I purchased one of these kits plus pre-cut shell. Installed them myself and after one day of playing it just died. when turned on, there's backlight but no image. Motherboard is working bc I tried it with my old screen, and it works fine. What could be the problem? ips screen or ribbon cable?
@@cleann_RYP I bought mine from aliexpress. After talking to seller he said the cable on the screen might be broken. So he sent me a new screen. After swapping the screen everything works perfect.
I already have a modded GBA SP but I recently bought a modded GBA with IPS for the sake of collecting. I also did check if it's FP V2 or HISPEEDIDO V2. It looks like it's HISPEEDIDO V2 because it has that big 5-in-1 Chip. My question is, is it okay to use NiMH AA 1.2V rechargeable batteries eventhough it's causing the Power Indicator to blink from red to green or just stays red? I'm using Ikea Ladda 2450mah. The power switch wasn't the issue. I already took the power switch apart to clean it even. When I use alkaline batteries that are 1.5V the blinking from green to red/red to green isn't happening. Will the gameboy advance just turn off at a certain point even if the Laddas aren't fully drained because of the lower voltage?
Unless you have solder that flux inside of it, you absolutely need flux, I just use rosin paste, just make sure to clean off any residue when you are done.
We prefer the Funnyplaying kits as they seem to have less problems with other mods etc. But for just a screen upgrade, Hispeedido should be totally fine
Typically we recommend Funnyplaying, the HISPEEDIDO ones work, but the Funnyplaying ones are just a slightly better experience. We always use the Funnyplaying screens for our Ultimate consoles as well, hope this helps :)
OK thank you! I am looking for a good game boy advance kit to play both GBA and GBC games but I am undecided between this kit and the "funnyplaying game boy advance ITA GBA backlight kit".

Hey! Which kit would you recommend. The funny playing kit or unbranded kit ?
Thank you for the guide! This helped a lot.

Could you guys do a tutorial on installing the audio amplifier and what sized speaker size works best with a GBA?
I'll relay it to the team! We have a bit of a schedule right now for specific tutorials/videos
I wish they would do a bigger screen like they did for the Gameboy color get rid of some of that side Bezel as much as possible would be neat
Yeah they also should do a laminated screen like the current ones for the GBC
@@Kiba_Fox agreed

Is it possible to remove the display from the adhesive, because I would like to do a shell swap without damaging my console
i installed mine and the top of the console doesn't fit together properly :( not so much that it can't be played but it's open a bit and it's annoying.
What if I don’t care for brightness controls do I still need to do any soldering?
No

We personally recommend the funny playing kits, but both are an enjoyable experience!
@@HandHeldLegend Thanks!
Just did mine, I can't get the brightness control to work, any troubleshooting on that? Otherwise it's working great!

I have a question what you recommend sound upgrade o Bluetooth emitter install!! For better experience
PUT ELECTRICAL TAPE ON THE RIBBON CABLE SO IT DOESNT MAKE CONTACT WITH OTHER THINGS. FROM THE PIN AREA ONWARD. UR WELCOME
Shouldn't the insulation sticker be directly applied to the back of the screen?
When purchasing the paired shell and glass screen, will the display still require the LCD bracket?
I wouldn't think so.
I'm literally waiting for my v2 ips to be delivered , it's gone through customs so not long now
Only a matter of time!
@@HandHeldLegend it actually turned up this morning so I shall be fitting shortly
If I don't want to solder the points for brightness control, could I still do it after I already installed the IPS panel?
I ordered the kit and it didn’t even come with spacers or insulation tape and it didn’t come with the correct adhesive for the screen …
First video I have seen not putting the insulation direction behind the screen...What do I even trust at this point
It's better if the L and R wires are in different colors.
Those are the colors that are included with the kit, but I agree
how is it better? it's 3 wires. if you can't keep track of 3 wires you probably shouldn't be doing the mod.
Never soldered before and have no idea what I need, what was the stuff you were using in the solder process?

Do you have to Pre-tin the pads? I have solder but I didn’t know you needed flux or anything

does the kit come w wires
I ordered the hispeedido as that was the only option for me. Any downsides for it compared to funny playing?

So just followed this guide select turns up brightness and select left chigger turns it down tryed everything still does it.

I just had the same issue, but i noticed that if you look closely when he's soldering the solder points are different on each side.

Looks like your double sided gift tape link goes to the kapton tape instead. Also, do you have a link for the bent pliers?
Thanks for looking out! The tape link is now updated, but do you mean pliers or bent tweezers? We do have a link for updated tweezers now as well
@@HandHeldLegend Sweet. I meant the bent tweezers, sorry.
Do I need to solder to use this kit?
No
I stripped one tri-screw and can't get it out! I need to open the back again to fix the d pad..
