  • Rare footage of 1903 New York City fish market. You can see crowds of early New Yorkers, probably many of them new immigrants, as they browse for fish. Maybe you can spot 2 of the vendors arguing and a man thumbing his nose at the camera at the end. This was originally filmed by the Thomas Edison Company, with the camera person situated on a building above the fish market.
This is three minutes but it's a great glimpse at a "ghetto" fish. The camera is on what appears to be a roof and it overlooks the fish market so you can see sellers showing off their items as well as shoppers going from table to table looking for what they're wanting. Getting to see the costumes, the bikes and various other items from the period is what makes this so fun. Film is from Library of Congress, Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division.
