i am 62 years of age in 2022. i remember my grandfather and his brother talking about listening to their grandfather and his brother talking about serving in the Union Army during the American Civil War. i remember listening to my grand uncle talking about when he was a boy during the Great War. talk to old people. you will learn something.
Agreed! I lived around a group of people 76-99 years old when I was a young & dumb 19 year old. They thought it was great I wanted to learn from them. They all grew their own food & lived on 5-acre parcels. It was a terrific experience. v
Yes, you're not wrong. When I was a kid, it was all the WWII vets still young enough to tell a tale and old enough not to be to self conscious about it. They were a very forebearing generation, very kind and understanding people, on the whole. My Grandfather's stories of staying on his Grandfather's farm during the school holidays, and learning to drive on his Uncle's Ford V8 - he told so many tales like that. His wife, my Grandmother, is still around, and she's much the same, tells a lot of things about the family that really make sense with things now. You learn a terrific lot about people and about yourself too, along the way. It's a real privilege.
My grandfather didn't like talking about the war, he saw it as a terrible time that had no business being remembered. He was there at the D day landings
As soon these very old films are slowed down to normal speed the people in them suddenly appear real and just like us - for some reason I always thought of people in the past being different ( which I know is crazy).
The main reason for silent films being speeded up was that the projectors were hand cranked at a different speed ratio from ones used for sound films. However, no modifications were previously made for this, when silent films were shown on the newer projectors.

Of all the film I've seen from this era, this is my favourite. Real people interacting with each other, some putting on airs and graces as others snigger; the heavily pregnant lady waving at the camera (how many of these do we see in old film clips?); the rakes parading around in their finery; the good looking man who, curiously, is the only one to wear a top hat; the spinster squinting suspiciouly at the camera, looking fearful; the flirty girl trying out the swing hammock. Everytime I look at it I see a new nuance and the colourisation bring these characters a little bit back to life.
The people seemed to love being filmed. They ladies looked happy to be there parading their beautiful dresses and hats. The little girls hats were sweet too!

Maybe as a time-traveller that had assimilated to a point; I looked and dressed like one of them but still had certain mannerisms that didn't really fit in, so besides them being interested in the camera they were also thinking 'who is that odd person'. lol. :)
It's pretty funny watching people in these videos just stop and stare at the camera, as if they're getting a photo taken. They just stand all awkward for a few seconds and then just walk off lol. Love these videos a lot! It's like looking through a window into another time.
Absolutely fantastic. No such thing as teenagers in the way we think of today.. the woman look so elegant and the men all look very smart... And the hat's.. Every one has one... Young and old.
The thing I like most about these remastered and colorized clips, is that we can see peoples facial expressions more clearly than ever before. Here we have Edwardian people. Some are trying to act natural around the camera. But they keep looking directly into the lens some smiling some looking shy some looking as though they don’t approve. Other people directly interact with the camera. They wave and mug for the camera and laugh. The expressions are exactly the same as people today. To me, there is a comfort to that
The ladies dresses were beautiful, but were probably hard to wash at the bottom of the skirts where they dragged the ground, some of the skirts( dresses) has a leather type material sewed around the bottom to help protect the material. The young boys were very curious at the camera man. Very interesting, loved this. Thanks for sharing.
They had a protective material (ruffles) for the part that dragged on the ground under the dress.. when it became too dirty after several washes they would rip it out and put another in another ruffle.. this helped keep the dresses cleaned-somewhat.
This is especially wonderful for me to watch as some of my ancestors could quite likely have attended this fair as they lived in and around Leeds! My Great Grandparents and Great Grandparents lived in the area and my Great Aunt would have been a toddler at the time. 😮Amazing.
So was my Nana, born in February 1901 . Our family still live in Leeds 4 generations later although a lot of our younger clan have moved on to pastures new they still come back home for a Yorkshire re charge 😊
As someone with a masters in history and a lifelong love of history and social norms - especially dress and manners, this was just my cup of Darjeeling. I watched it several times. I got quite emotional, perhaps the exquisite music with it tugged at my heartstrings too. Little girls beautifully dressed and be curled, wearing tiny white gloves ( never to touch nasty things). The hats! Oh the hats! Flat caps, bowlers, boaters, derbys, panamas, top hats, gorgeousness atop ladies heads. All feathers and dead birds, ribbons and lace. What we spend on electronics and Netflix, they squirrelled away to purchase an Easter Hat or expensive lace, a new corset or day dress. There wasn’t a badly dressed woman there. Or maybe we can’t discern the subtle differences. Thank you to whoever does this. You made my week. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🌟🌟🌟😊😊😊

it was a special occasion ,Leeds was very poor in the late 1800s early 1900s mostly a slum area most children were barefooted in the areas around the town centre sadly this isnt a good example of living conditions
@pauljames1258 There were also very affluent areas in Leeds . Plenty of upper middle class to support a growing retail city centre with fancy arcades and huge new town hall. Industrialists made money hand over fist ,with coal mines in the outlying areas ,Burmentoffs pottery, wool production spinning, textile production, and Tailoring. Leeds produced fine cloth that went to Saville Row in London. You can see some of the people in this film are not as wealthy as others from their clothes and the harder lines on their faces. I'm not pretending my city didn't have slums and deep deprivation but that isn't the whole picture as you can see from this film. I would be really interested to know where in Leeds it was held , I haven't been able to find that information. Leeds was and still is to an extent surrounded by agricultural land.
I can’t imagine wearing long, uncomfortable gowns and heavy, decorative hats although they looked gorgeous. This video gives me a glimpse of the early 20th century life. Both of my paternal grandpa and his 2nd wife were born in 1902. His first wife who was born in 1904 died of pneumonia in 1940 unfortunately. My maternal grandfather was born on Aug 31, 1903 and died of brain tumour on Aug 30, 1947. My maternal grandma was born on July 15, 1904 and passed away on July 12, 1982. My great grandparents on both of my parents’ sides were young parents in 1902 when this video was filmed. Interesting and nostalgic!!

And please keep in mind that they didn't wear synthetic plastic crap we wear today -- the fabrics were natural and breathable, so not as uncomfortable as you might think.. except for the shoes. It's when you see the little things that you recognise from today that it really hits home, like when the fella with the cigarette at 02:02 does that quick nod to acknowledge the camera as he passes it. That's something I would do.
A brief glimpse at many lives. For many here, it might have been one of the only times they were on film. If they could each choose a moment that they felt needed to be remembered, that said something about who they were and what they valued, like a visual epitaph, I wonder what they would have chosen. There are hard to pinpoint feelings from seeing all the faces and small details, all the people that were unique but also so much a product of their place and time. There's a feeling of being a world away, but at the same time the feeling that people's lives are basically the same regardless of time and place. There's a feeling that says very plainly and undeniably 'it's all been done countless times before'. A feeling that so many lives just like our own full of color and a sense of purpose have disappeared from the world and been mostly forgotten, faintly preserved in the snippets that remain which are unable to come to life and grow. I hope these people led good, happy lives and were mostly well. Everything they did shaped all that's happened further downstream, but who knows who made what happen?
Truly amazing! My paternal grandma and grandpa were born in 1891. Grandma would tell me wonderful stories of her and other relatives that were born before that.
I found this quite moving, all those people no longer with us, but look like having a great time, on a lovely weather day in this video. Would be nice to go there and experience it for a day.

What Ilove about England is their houses full of history, sometimes few hundreds years old.. you can still found thatched roofs on houses. Looks very charming and beautiful. I watched somewhere that’s very costly ( around 30 000 pounds or so) and it needed to be done every 20-30 years yet many English people are willing to have it on houses no matter the price. Love their sense for history and culture. In the US if its not new and big is not good which is ridicules.
A few comments. First, I want to thank the person who did the work restoring and enhancing this film. This makes it so much easier to watch. Second, note how everyone is dressed. The shear elegance of the period is astonishing compared to today. Also, I would guess that skin cancer was not a major issue in that time period. And most of the people in this film knew someone who was alive during the reign of George III.

I'm in the same age bracket. My grand parents were born during the 1880s and 1890s . I sat on their laps. My son was born in 1985. He heard many stories about WW 2 from his grandpa's. One was stationed near Pearl Harbor, the other was in Germany. Yes, we are getting kinda old. The moon landings were over 50 years ago.

A few notes, (a) it is remarkable how magically color makes each one of them immediately recognizable that we can empathize with all of them all, although probably not their fashion choices, though that it simply a quirk of time (much like tank tops and active pants are now!) When they occasionally fade back to b & w it seems as though they are pushed to the distant past once again (b) a moving pictures camera must have been like seeing a spaceship (or a person in said tank top and active pants) as can be seen by their reactions and (c) people were in animated conversation with one another with no little modern distractions, and they all seemed to have a cheeky humor

It is unbelievable how natural these people seem, now that it is slowed down. These quick movements gave old movies always an unreal atmosphere.

For the upper and middle classes life was great, the poor working class still had to wait a couple of decades to achieve some comfortable living.

My great grandpa was born in 1901 hes 1 yr old infant when this video was recored. He pass away in 1981. Nice video.

it was a special occasion ,Leeds was very poor in the late 1800s early 1900s mostly a slum area most children were barefooted in the areas around the town centre sadly this isnt a good example of living conditions

@pauljames1258 There were also very affluent areas in Leeds . Plenty of upper middle class to support a growing retail city centre with fancy arcades and huge new town hall. Industrialists made money hand over fist ,with coal mines in the outlying areas ,Burmentoffs pottery, wool production spinning, textile production, and Tailoring. Leeds produced fine cloth that went to Saville Row in London. You can see some of the people in this film are not as wealthy as others from their clothes and the harder lines on their faces. I'm not pretending my city didn't have slums and deep deprivation but that isn't the whole picture as you can see from this film. I would be really interested to know where in Leeds it was held , I haven't been able to find that information. Leeds was and still is to an extent surrounded by agricultural land.
I can’t imagine wearing long, uncomfortable gowns and heavy, decorative hats although they looked gorgeous. This video gives me a glimpse of the early 20th century life. Both of my paternal grandpa and his 2nd wife were born in 1902. His first wife who was born in 1904 died of pneumonia in 1940 unfortunately. My maternal grandfather was born on Aug 31, 1903 and died of brain tumour on Aug 30, 1947. My maternal grandma was born on July 15, 1904 and passed away on July 12, 1982. My great grandparents on both of my parents’ sides were young parents in 1902 when this video was filmed. Interesting and nostalgic!!

And please keep in mind that they didn't wear synthetic plastic crap we wear today -- the fabrics were natural and breathable, so not as uncomfortable as you might think.. except for the shoes. I just cannot imagine those narrow, pointy boots they wore being comfortable.

It's when you see the little things that you recognise from today that it really hits home, like when the fella with the cigarette at 02:02 does that quick nod to acknowledge the camera as he passes it. That's something I would do.
I love the two men on the left 0:41 the guy wagging his finger and using his stick. The other chap is only half listening but he gives a quick nod.
A brief glimpse at many lives. For many here, it might have been one of the only times they were on film. If they could each choose a moment that they felt needed to be remembered, that said something about who they were and what they valued, like a visual epitaph, I wonder what they would have chosen.
There are hard to pinpoint feelings from seeing all the faces and small details, all the people that were unique but also so much a product of their place and time. There's a feeling of being a world away, but at the same time the feeling that people's lives are basically the same regardless of time and place. There's a feeling that says very plainly and undeniably 'it's all been done countless times before'. A feeling that so many lives just like our own full of color and a sense of purpose have disappeared from the world and been mostly forgotten, faintly preserved in the snippets that remain which are unable to come to life and grow.
I hope these people led good, happy lives and were mostly well. Everything they did shaped all that's happened further downstream, but who knows who made what happen?

Truly amazing! My paternal grandma and grandpa were born in 1891. Grandma would tell me wonderful stories of her and other relatives that were born before that.
I found this quite moving, all those people no longer with us, but look like having a great time, on a lovely weather day in this video. Would be nice to go there and experience it for a day.

What Ilove about England is their houses full of history, sometimes few hundreds years old.. you can still found thatched roofs on houses. Looks very charming and beautiful. I watched somewhere that’s very costly ( around 30 000 pounds or so) and it needed to be done every 20-30 years yet many English people are willing to have it on houses no matter the price. Love their sense for history and culture. In the US if its not new and big is not good which is ridicules.
Old houses are nothing special in Europe. I have even in my hometown houses which were built long before the American continent was even discovered.

A few comments. First, I want to thank the person who did the work restoring and enhancing this film. This makes it so much easier to watch. Second, note how everyone is dressed. The shear elegance of the period is astonishing compared to today. Also, I would guess that skin cancer was not a major issue in that time period. And most of the people in this film knew someone who was alive during the reign of George III.
The little girls on the swings were about the same age as my grandfathers, born in 1895.
What an amazing video! I love seeing all the elaborate hat's and dresses. The video quality is so good it's like travelling back in time for a moment.

GREAT VIDEO SO RELAXING TO WATCH FROM THE PAST
A few notes, (a) it is remarkable how magically color makes each one of them immediately recognizable that we can empathize with all of them all, although probably not their fashion choices, though that it simply a quirk of time (much like tank tops and active pants are now!) When they occasionally fade back to b & w it seems as though they are pushed to the distant past once again (b) a moving pictures camera must have been like seeing a spaceship (or a person in said tank top and active pants) as can be seen by their reactions and (c) people were in animated conversation with one another with no little modern distractions, and they all seemed to have a cheeky humor

All so smart and impeccably dressed. No trackie bottoms riding low on the hips, showing off underwear, no bling, unsightly gold sovereign rings on every finger. These people dressed with pure class.
