  • Violin and viola students at the Utrecht Conservatory describe their participation in a study in which improved their playing and comfort by changing their chin rest and shoulder rest and retraining cramped playing habits. You can see how they changed their equipment and how they trained to play more freely at www.violinistinbalance.nl. For information on how we do it now, see www.artistinbalance.org

Well I was a pro violinist a long time ago and had enormous technical problems. I had Alexander lessons with a truly fantastic teacher, I can honestly say it changed my life. I so relate to the idea of discovering that "I was not the problem" which I absolutely thought I was. I think the truth is that from a human mechanical perspective the violin is just one of the most challenging instruments, the set up and use of the body have to be pretty much perfect.

Very informative, thank you. I paid $1500 a month for 6 months to a so-called Alexander Technique lady from United States who would try online to change ones posture by different thinking habits - what pure nonsense!!
This video of yours is absolute the opposite and very helpful! Thank you very much once again! My Kreddle chin rest is on its way - A higher chin rest, sitting on the side. I trust it will make a difference especially in my bowing.

High arched violins are very difficult to play. Students should play on medium or low arched instruments
