  • In this video, I talk about the #basics of #ACES. The Academy Color Encoding System. What it is, what it's for and why more and more high-end production houses are using it in their pipelines. It seriously improves your #Workflow. You will learn how to work in ACES in Blackmagic Fusion, Davinci Resolve and After Effects.
    You can expect a more detailed video in the future. It's worth talking about differences between ACEScc, ACESct, ACEScg etc. and their behaviors.

    It's worth mentioning for anyone struggling to export your comp from after effects, you need to turn off color management in your output settings as well. Otherwise, the colors will shift.

    EXCELLENT intro to ACES. I tested this technique on a few clips that I felt were lacking proper color adjustment from CLOG3. The footage was much much closer to being usable right away. Using ACES would have been a great starting point to color correct and eventually grade. This is excellent information. Thank you!

    Hi andrey,
    thank you for the video ! I have been using ACES (not a lot but regularly) and I'm glad to see I did it properly.
    If I may, I think there is another way to make it work in AE : configure your project as you said (32bpcc, linear) but without assigning a color workspace. Then when you import your footage, change the color interpretation to Keep RGB values. This bypass AE color management. Now you can use OCIO plugin on each clip in your comp to convert it to ACES and an adjustment layer with OCIO to convert it back to the output you want.
    That's what I've been doing and it seems to work fine but I'll give a try to your method to see if there's any difference.
    Thank again ! (I really have to give ACES a try in Resolve to color grade)

      Colorspaces are incredibly important. 99% of artists of all sorts are working in colorspaces that limit the hell out of them. (google FILMIC). Im more of a science than an art guy..who loves art. Basically you art creatives are being hamstrung at a level you dont realise exists because it's the norm. All devices input and output color based on the choices programmers and corporations make. When those choices should be made by you guys.. at least the brilliant ones, not a guy who sees all color as a wavelength. From that it sounds like aces will end that problem. Devices, software etc wont matter anymore. You'll have the full pallet.

  • @thenout
    @thenout 5 лет назад +4

    Hey Andrey, big fan here, thanks for bringing ACES to the people. Since there's a lot of confusion out there already, I would have hoped you distinguish between the terms Color Space, Gamut, and LOG profile (or Transform function, rather), as it is crucial to the concept and overall understanding (you are dealing with transform functions in this video primarily). Hence, I'd like to ask you, what about the Offset-Slider behaviour in Resolve. You note that it now "behaves as linear light", which is wrong as I see it. Linear means: doubling the light intensity doubles the recorded values, which is absolutely not what happens in the waveform. I believe this example contributes more to confusion than it helps to clarify.

    • @thenout
      @thenout 5 лет назад

      Just to elaborate a bit: the camera does record everything linear, but due to limitations in file size the values will be transformed using a camera specific function, the Optical Image Transform Function (if I remember correctly). This is nothing else than a "LOG-curve". Technically, if you record in REC709, this is also a LOG curve, which gets automatically inverted by the video player to give out a linear result. Here it gets really tricky dealing with the term linear light...
      For example, in Nuke, you assign a profile when you import the footage item, let's say Slog2. Nuke inverts this transform function to achieve linear light space, which is how light behaves in real world. The image only looks "OK" though when you apply a viewer LUT to simulate, let's say, Rec709 output. When you do render out, you apply a profile (which has nothing to do with ACES profiles...) to the clip. So a Rec709 function is applied, which in return gets inverted by the playing device, resulting also in a "linear" image. Did I sum that up correctly?

    • @AndreyLebrov
      @AndreyLebrov  5 лет назад +4

      Yeap, you’re correct. My intention was to introduce ACES. If I would go deep into specifics and how exactly all encoding happens this video would be several hours long. Hence why I didn’t talk about the differences between aces versions. I know what you mean, but that kind of content would be aimed to an advanced audience. I’m trying to simplify a lot of things so that people would start to look into it. As for my examples, I did say it’s not true, it’s just my analogy to describe the difference in how curves are shaped.
      It’s worth mentioning this video is a follow up to linear workflow video where I mentioned automatic conversions to curves and showed other stuff you mentioned.
      Thank you for the comment ❤️ I appreciate your contribution and opinion.
