Back in the ancient times when I was kid on the farm we had an old Bearcat Grinder and then we used Grain-O-Vator wagons. Dusty work grinding feed. The grinder/mixer "feed mill" obsoleted the lot! My uncle used to use a "Lorenz" grinder mixer it was one of the earliest with hydraulic motor driven augers. It was a heavy sucker too.
i think its pretty neat looking at then and now photos of farms. we have a pic from 65 with the brand new grain facility and the old stand alone corn crib in it .It was one of the ones that was 6ft by like 60 ft long. It also had the new machine shed in it. When my grandpa built it everyone said it was too big that he would never use all of the space. Its too small now. We have 3 machine sheds and still don't have enough space. i really like the ones were its shows people going about farm work because its telling a store.
That grinder is identical to the machine that during my early teens my gracious, patient Dutch dairy farmer neighbors attempted stoically to impart operating care and knowledge into my thick skull. It was a different life, I will always miss it.
Nice you all help each other. I used to grind feed for beef cattle , feeder pigs , sows and sheep by myself. Back in the 70’s. And I enjoyed every minute of it.
Back in the 70’s and 80’s when my Dad and brother and I milked in South Central Ky we wore out two brand new New Holland Grinder Mixers we ground all the feed rations for our milk cows and our feed out lots for beef heifers and steers, this brings a lot of memories thanks Ryan 👍
Yep, those feed grinders are super expensive... wanted to buy an old '92 Gehl at an auction, was decent shape for its age, went close to $8,000. Insane!
no way we have an old gehl 100, can't belive it went for that much! talk about nuts. We made a video of our if you want to see one in action ruclips.net/video/n7fMWpvlWTc/видео.html !
I started to buy a pen of cattle last month. $6.00 farm corn and -15F temps. The feedlot Corn must be close to $7.00 because it is steamed rolled to add 10% water. Also the grain elevator and delivery must add 10% more. I locked in a +60 cent basis for 2021. A lot of the corn comes west from the Mid West by 110 car unit train. In Texas we were -10F to -15 for last week. Eastern New Mexico and the Panhandle's Southwest electric grid was lucky not to loose power even with light wind to make 25% green energy. Hi Ryan. You talked about buying a feed mill. I got a used Gehl, 125, 100 bushel Roller Mill. I'm out of the cattle feeding business now, retired from it. So it's for Sale. I see you don't have a e-mail address listed below. I sent Travis a e-mail about my cattle trailer last week, as he thought about replacing yours some time. I got a nice one of those too. So you can see him about contacting me about my feed mill. In very good condition, i serviced it a lot after i got done using it, so if i decided to sell it, it would be ready to go, for some one to use with out a problem.
Ryan those pontiacs are known for blowing head gaskets after "replacing the head gaskets" I replaced mine two times and was told by the mechanic that the gaskets were made out of poor quality material. I'm betting that is the issue again. I sent my Pontiac down the road.
I love seeing old photos like that and comparing to what's there today. You should retake that photo this year and do a side by side comparison, would be pretty neat to see. Im glad you threw in that Office reference, cause that is the first thing that came to mind when I saw the cows turn their heads at the sound of the corn lol. Great video as always Ryan! Thanks for the update!
Get someone (Perhaps someone else) to re-torque the head bolts to the proper ft/lbs. They may have settled/loosened. Might solve some of the problems. Fairly quick, easy and cheap to do, usually.
We take the screen out or use the biggest screen in our Mix mill and keep the revs down to do corn for the cows. Too bad you’re so far away I’m selling our Newholland 353. Nice shape kept inside.
That’s a pretty cool picture Ryan. And that’s a hell of a deal on that Feedmill good lord that’s like a 16th of what we paid for ours back in the day haha
Yea finding our days here have a certain amount of suck factor for the day. Lately the icy snow has really put that up! Looking forward to a great spring and warmer weather. Come on planting weather...
@@indianafarmer1762 Lorenz invented the hydraulic ones, I have never seen a JD mill, Owatonna mills are also made in MN, they all seem to come with high tech options like scales and stuff now , but not many farmers grind on a small scale like that anymore. Grinding corn on the farm was the best as a kid I got to turn the pto on and hit the throttle on the 1066. I was only like 7 or 8 when I started doit it but it was the best.
Hey Ryan if you were going to up grade your mill, what would it be? We have an old Gehl100 if you want to see it I made a video ruclips.net/video/n7fMWpvlWTc/видео.html !
We put old shingles under an old barn door that we needed to open in order to get firewood out, and it seemed like it worked. I am not certain if that will work with how freaking cold it has been, but it might work.

He's talked about it before in previous years... that auger up to the hammer mill is REALLY slow and won't lift the grain at too steep of an angle, it just keeps rolling it over and tumbling it. SO they use the jump auger and if you noticed in the vid after they got it started they even raised the jump auger wheels off the ground by winching up the feed auger into the mill so it runs more level, so it will actually move the corn faster into the hammer mill. If they put it down to the ground so it'd go under the bin auger outlet, the thing wouldn't move corn hardly AT ALL up into the hammer mill... that's why they bought the jump auger to begin with. Later! OL J R :)
Another £2000+ for 9 tonnes of feed here so feel your pain with that. Hopefully having the ewes scanned tomorrow so we know how many they'll be having hopefully it'll be a lot better than last year.
Ryan you should do a video comparing the difference of either crack corn make your cows feels different or whole corn just to make you cows act different.
Have you ever looked at planting something other than corn for feed. Such as milo/sorghum. It has a lot less input cost and can yield about the same protein/ac as corn. Just seems like a lot of money could be saved by selling all the corn and feeding the cheaper option.
For the amount of corn we put through the cows, I think it’s a better idea to just put in all corn and sell the rest vs putting in another crop with the expectation of feeding it all
Great vid, as always. Stay warm. You've had that creep feeder for what, a couple years now? Is it doing what you'd hoped for with your calves nutrition / growth? You'd did some extra painting / coating on it when you got it - how's that holding up?

bookwind from N Carolina About the New Holland Mill, can you vary the cracked kernel from coarse to fine? Does it have a corn meal setting. Does the New Holland accept corn still on the cobb?
I feed whole corn to my cows for energy in the winter. I have been told that even though you see kernels in the manure the nutrition has already been used by the cow. By the time the corn goes through the rumen and is regurgitated as a cud there is very little if any waste.
$5 corn is good for the grower. But it's hard to swallow when you are feeding. I know you talked about it before but why don't you feed corn silage. We are selling fats at Hanging weight $3,600 to our customers. That includes butcher fees. Have a great day
Hard part for us is getting the equipment back to be able to feed corn silage and being set up for it. We've got the harvestores but they're set up to feed in the barn. It probably boils down to cost to get converted because we could get a feed wagon and haul it out.
One year we had 100 head of feeders we chopped about 20 acres of silage put in a 40 ft up right. Corn that year was like $2.00 we pushed the pencil on that 20 acres and figured that corn made us about $6.00 a bushel as feed. You can actually crack the corn using your mill if you take the screen out. It wont crack it all but it will certainly crack the most of it...
At five dollars you best pick every kernel off the ground. ;-) There were no live stock where i use to farm. It's fun to watch and learn from you.
