Our schedule may vary, but expect a new video every Wednesday. Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a RUclips channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Most important point is that all of you are okay. All the rest will be better in due time. The storm hit me not too long before it hit you, and my house was essentially unscathed, but there is a lot of damage here in Iowa. I tried to work last night in Newton, but the situation did not allow me to get anything accomplished. Get your rest when you can, Ryan. We will all be here when you are ready to post videos. Family and farming come first.

Thank you for saying what you said about hooking up a generator. Some people as simple as it sounds don’t realize they need to shut off the main breaker for the power coming in. I have a friend who is a lineman and he was injured from someone doing this. Small generators usually are not strong enough but a power takeoff generator such as yours could easily cause harm. I’m sorry to hear about your crap you guys work so hard to have a beautiful crop just to have it flattened is disheartening

I had a similar thing happen to my house several years ago now. I'm not a small man by almost anyone's imagination, but an oak tree a bit larger than my diameter fell on my house, nearly splitting it in half. I still show the pictures to the younger kids in my family asking if they want to see Uncle Brent's tree house :) In my case I had just paid to have the roof replaced only six days before. Stuff can be replaced, though it will hurt for a while. Good luck and enjoy the meteor shower. Be thankful you weren't injured during that tree falling, your house is able to take far greater an impact than your skull :)

This happened in northern Minnesota on July 4th 1999.
It went from Lake Of The Woods across the state and flattened trees in Superior National Forest.
People were trapped under tree's in the BWCA in their tents. Years later some of the areas largest forest fires were from the massive blowdown.
My heart goes out to you and the people of eastern Iowa.

Makes me so sad to see this...worst storm I lived through 1959...tornado went around house...knocked down 3 barns....house made it by the grace of God....barn my 1942 John Deere D model broke off its steering wheel...I was 11 yrs old...took my Dad and me a year to clean up...cattle lived but were all over the county...makes me so sad because I know how hard you are working....brought it back to me like it was yesterday...people don’t realize what a struggle it is to be a farmer....I am so sorry for your loss as I can feel it and it hurts....

I wish you and the rest of your family all the best. Cheers Phil.

With the old dairy barns, when we first started seeing the small dairy farmers selling out for various reasons, my Dad told me the barns if not used and kept weather tight they were doomed as we see happening today, 50 some years ago. I have not lived in a farming area for 40 years but this is still hard to watch, farm buildings over the years cost a fair amount of cash to maintain but they do give a very good return on your investment.

Looks like silage corn now, if you have the equipment to chop it and put it in a silo or bags. Had a Derecho go through here July 15th, 1980. Power was out at my house for 2 weeks. I lost about 30% of the shingles on the windward side of the 2 year old house. The manufactures warranty wouldn't cover them because the builders installed them improperly. They are supposed to be nailed just below the sealing strip. They used staples in the upper half of the shingles also didn't remove the plastic strips that kept the shingles from sticking together in the bundle. The instructions were on the extra bundles I had ordered in case something happened. It's shocking how many builders and roofing companies improperly install shingles.

Had it not been for quick thinking on my part, my truck would have been on it side with me in it, like many ended up being that day. Farmers are Amazing, to stay Positive in bad times and not complain. Roll up your sleeves and move on.Its so easy for some people to complain an cry about how bad they have it. Farmers the backbones of our country. God Bless

I live in central Iowa and we have the same crop damage you experienced there in Wisconsin. Absolutely devastating! Mother Nature can be so cruel sometimes.

So sorry for the damage you guys had but like you said you are fortunate. In Iowa it’s really bad somewhere around ten million acres of corn on the ground and a lot of bins and barns and machinery sheds down I feel so sorry for those farmers, take care and stay safe 👍

The worst of this storm was just north of us. Had some damage nothing like so many of you have. Know very well what you folks are going through. Been hit with bad straight line wind, and tornadoes here.
