  • What’s digital asset management (DAM) and why do you need it?
Peter Krogh, author of “The DAM Book: Digital Asset Management for Photographers,” speaks with Dan Milnor, Blurb evangelist and photographer. They break down the three areas of your media asset management system:
    1. The storage of your photos: What are you storing your media on, how are you backing it up, and how can it be restored in the event of a problem?
    2. The organization of your photos: How do you classify your photos using embedded metadata?
    3. The use of your photos: How do you put your photos together in a compelling way?
Join Peter and Dan as they discuss all of these aspects of a solid digital asset management (DAM) system and more!

We had some excellent questions in the chat during the event.
Here are some answers from Peter:
    1. A 50 GB data DVD burner is a Blu-ray disc. They go bigger than 50 GB - you can buy 100 GB discs. They work well.
    2. PhotoMechanic is a great tool for tagging, but it’s not really a catalog in the regular sense. It does not truly “remember” what’s supposed to be there.
    3. There are a few DAM options that aren't Lightroom. Photo Supreme has a lot of capability, but the user interface is a bit tough to understand. Daminion is a nice copy of iView Media Pro, but it's Windows only.
    4. You can back up files and disconnect the drive(s) with Backblaze, but you must reconnect at least once every 30 days.

And here are some answers from Dan:
    1. There are many alternative storage options, including some high-priced disc options but the reality is that many of us can’t afford those items or the machines that utilize those options. At this point, finding multiple, affordable, easy-to-access options are our best bet.
    2. Photo Mechanic is a solid program and one used by many photographers. If it works for you and allows you to continue your process for reviewing, editing, managing, and exporting your work then by all means.
    3. Well, there are alternatives to Lightroom like Skylum Luminar, On1 Photo Raw, and Capture One but all of these platforms have serious limitations and often come with a steep learning curve. There is no one correct way for everyone but searching for an alternative will take time and patience.
