- How to get scouted? What do football scouts look for in young players? What can you do to get scouted to a football club? In today's Unisport Uncut episode we discuss the role of football scouts, how to get scouted and what football scouts look for in talented players. The role of a football scout might be confusing to some people out there and hopefully this video will clarify what scouts are all about. If you want to get scouted, listen to the advice in this episode and who knows, you might learn a thing or two on how to get scouted yourself! Remember, in order to become a professional footballer you need to work really hard, spend countless of hours practicing your football skills and ensure you dedicate your entire life to playing football. The advice in this video will not guarantee you will get scouted but we hope you will learn more about the process of getting scouted & what scouts are looking for in young players.
The main purpose and job of a football scout is to find and discover promising, talented and mainly young football players before anyone else does - and ultimately sign them to the club or client the scout is working for. This process is usually very difficult for the football scouts as there are so many talented footballers out there who dream of becoming professional footballers. Football scouts watch hundreds of games in order to find interesting and promising players and getting scouted is one of many ways on how you can become a professional footballer!
Some of the main thing football scouts are looking for in young players include;
- Your technical level. What kind of football skills do you have? How comfortable are you with the ball at your feet? How is your first touch? How is your shooting and passing technique? Are you comfortable playing with only one or two touches?
- Your mental strength and leadership qualities. Are you afraid of mistakes on the pitch? Are you communicating with your teammates on the pitch? Are you able to stay focused throughout the match? Can you take responsibility on the pitch?
- Your football brain and football IQ. How well can you read the game? How is your movement off the ball? How do you position yourself when defending?
... and the list goes on!

They’re many players whose parents never believed in them but now they are playing in Premier League, LaLiga. Tell you what...put in the work that is needed, maybe more and you’ll be one of those players (take advantage of the school team. You might not know who’s watching). All the best man

When I was 8 Leyton orient scouted me, I played there for about 3 years till they released me, I got released coz my manager had an argument with my dad over something and he reckoned that I was too small anyway, then when I was 12 charlton signed me and I’ve been their since so what I’m trying to say is that some teams are harsh on you and will let you go if your not up to standard with their requirements but some teams are easier to play for

Guys I just wanna say that I'm 24 and recently I have been in Try out game and got some compliment from the coach, and he invited me for the training with the club members. So I have my chance. Just wanna make sure that I have never been coached before but so far i was training individually and played soccer with some guys from street cos My dream is being a pro player and i can sacrifice anything for Football. I am 12 years old and I try everyday to improve. I am not in a football club because my parents can't pay for the club fees. I am from Zimbabwe, but live in South Africa. I play football almost everyday for about 4 hours a day hoping that someone will think i'm good. I try and improve in every part of the game in thought I like playing in the midfield and train in other parts of the field, like on the wings in the defense, even in the attack. I'm very good at running and dribbling with pace, have a good pass on me and can do a great slide tackle. I am not very strong and can't really do Ronaldo skills, but all the skills I know are from this channel. Even though I don't play for a club, I try to play soccer with as much people as I can at school after PE and at home with more experienced players who play or played for clubs. I hope one day play for a club somehow.

You have to play in a succesful, well known amateur team.
No scout will come to a small village looking for diamonds in the mud.

Don't forget to hit gym. Sadly, for most people, the first thing scouts look for are pace, height and muscle because they will always have an advantage over a smaller player and can be moulded to be technical afterwards. Even Barcelona are releasing smaller players, even though they raised Iniesta, Xavi, Puyol (short for a CB) and, of course, Messi. The earlier you hit the gym the better, if you start going as soon as you hit puberty you can actually alter your skeletal structure to carry more muscle. ie broaden shoulders and lengthen legs.

I didn't say gym 'hard' nor did I say to go before puberty. Just casual, light weight, high reps until 16 then you can go heavier but it's still very important.

I have never actually been across a scout but I think that there are scouts out there that can really help players become pros. Question: is there a certain place that you have to live to be able to be scouted by some of the finest soccer clubs?

I got scouted when I was 10, got released 3 years later. I played in defence and was a great tackler and I always read the game well, they released me because I wasn’t fast enough haha. Keep in mind I was 1/ years old. I am now 16 and one of the fastest in my boys club and school team.
I’m a 12 year old boy from South Africa. It’s hard to get scouted since in the city I live in there are no pro teams and I’ve never a football scout. Only rugby and cricket scouts although in SA football is actually the most popular sport. I used to play for a small club but I since left cause I Knew there would be nobody scouting there. I’ve now slighted adjusted my dream job from a pro footballer to a football journalist, manager,scout, agent,pundit or basically any fun job to do with football.
Edit: I also remember there was a boy who just 13 at the time (14 now) he was a spectacular player who played in midfield or anywhere upfront he was a deadly finisher and scored free kicks half way down the pitch. I feel sorry for h8m cause he is one of the most talented players I’ve ever seen but I don’t think he’ll ever get scouted.

I was heavily involved in football as a kid and watched 4 of my friends become professional. What i don't understand, there was lots of better players who never got scouted. Literally all round better players. How do they slip through the net?
I'm guessing they are not at the right place at the right time.
I am a footballer from Nigeria and I am 19 and I believe in myself that I can do a lot, but I have a problem which is my Dad. He doesn't believe in me, the funny part is that he has never seen me play football, so I feel bad whenever I tell him about my intentions about becoming a pro footballer.

I am 15. I'm 6ft tall. I'm fast I'm strong, I can dribble, pass, shoot and defend and have played different positions from centre back, to midfield, to winger and all the way to striker. Btw I know it sounds like i'm bragging but these are things that my coaches tell me. I just have one problem. My Dad is not supporting me and he's probably gonna make me drop football, so I can focus on my education because my grades aren't't the best. I'm honestly gutted, but there isn't much I can do about it :( My point is, I feel like I have potential to succeed in football but my family isn't backing me.

Meren Jamir I can’t really give you any tips that will get you 100% scouted. Its all luck when it comes down to it, you need a scout to come see you by luck. All I can say is, keep trying, never give up and play every game to your best. If you do that it will give you a 10x better chance of being scouted. Some people are good enough to be pro, but a scout may never see them. Just keep playing with emotion, skill and pride and hopefully one day a scout will be there. If you have all 3 of those characteristics, you will have a good chance :) Good luck in for the future, I hope you make it to the top!

Work as had in school as you do on the football pitch and you'll be successful no matter what! Train hard- play easy! Study hard - live easier! Also, if you are fortunate enough to become a pro-footballer you'll have the ability to have game-intelligence, speed of thought and when your'e giving television interviews you'll have the vocabulary to represent your country, your family and yourself very well. Post-football career you'll have the intelligence to buy and manage your own team - Education is NEVER a bad investment, as unless you break your brain and you can't think anymore, then trust me, your brain and education WILL long outlast your never-ending decaying body (post-30 years old if you are lucky) - says an older wise bloke! So trust your parents as they love you! Football doesn't. Now go and train hard, train smart and then do the same in class champ! No excuses on the pitch or in class, - no days off! All the best. I think on technical side what scouts look for are depend on the position of the player. For example for a midfielder, player’s passing and ball possesion-control abilities are the two most important things ( as a side not Pogba is too good in these), how good the player dribbles ( being so good in the first two plus this makes it like Iniesta level) and the less important things like how good he can shoot, his physical condition and so on.

Guys I'm going to try trials next year at 16 don't give up if you don't believe I have a good career but I had hard times I started to love football at 3 I joined my first team at 5 I was there for 2 years but I was to small and slow I tried so many clubs for the next 3 years nothing, one day I tried out for a really unknown team they accepted me they said I was perfect they tried me at 11 then I joined them, which I am now part of now i'm 15 I've been scouted by many big/medium clubs like Wigan, Chelsea, Newcastle, sunderland and... LIVERPOOL NEVER ever give up this exciting thing happened to me I'm trying out for all these clubs next year's good luck please don't give up even if it's not a big club start small then start up the ranks! I feel like I have the mental portion, the most important part mastered. The thing is, it doesn't show on the field. I know that no one believes in me, but I will keep trying. Always remember that you should have fun, no matter how intense. I play for an insanely intense club, and I always remember, always laugh. Even the USWNT fools around. Never let your goals get in the way of you having fun.
