I saw SCREAM in the theater the Saturday after the premiere. I was 14. Obviously they didn’t care about my age. But for some reason every time I hear you say SCREAM I keep going “Uahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh” damn you Master P. 😜
Wanna know something strange? This movie was HUGE back in the day, but it seems to be buried and forgotten. Everyone talks about 80s horror, but when it comes to 90s they only remember the Blair witch.
@@laughingseal2282 Nope everyone definitely remembers Scream when it comes to 90's horror even if the Blair Witch Project is a part of the conversation.
@@laughingseal2282 honestly considering how scream had a TV series just a few years ago, and how they're releasing a new entry in the movie franchise soon? i don't think it's all that forgotten
This movie gave us: One of the most iconic horror villains of all time. One of the greatest heroines of all time. Two of the best supporting protagonists of all time. Some of the best lines and scenes in horror history. Etc.
Of all time is a bit overkill but it was/is a genuinely fresh take that's held up extremely well. I love the attention to the small details. Like the end reveal that the killer is played by two individuals. They actually bothered to have the killer played by the actors (or stuntmen of the same heights) because the heights kept changing throughout the movie.
The original will always be a classic. Some of it aged badly (the late 90s aged badly) but I think it’s biggest curse over the years has been the Scary Movie franchise. It’s always in the back of my head when I view certain scenes in the first two scream films
I think Sydney on the porch calling ghost face out is the introduction to who she really is. Every movie she’s on the phone with dude scream2 at the sorority house talking shit/calling him out. scream 3 she takes back her power by “becoming the caller” She’s ballsy every movie
If you want to be deeply depressed and entertained watch Mr Ballen's channel where he did a review of the actual murders that inspired the 'Scream' movie.
That Scene in the Groceries Store.... It was STRONGLY Hinted, within the Movie, that that was Actually a Prankster, NOT the Real Ghostface(s)/Killers.... Remember All of the Pranksters Dressed Up as Ghostface at the High School, at the High School Bathroom, etc.
Man as a horror fan I miss Wes Craven. I liked New Nightmare. I’d say it was 3rd behind the original and Dream Warriors. Fill in the rest and put Freddy’s Dead at the end.
Scream did self awarness before it became common for everyone to do. If scream 5 want to duplicate the effect of killing drew barrymore. They gotta kill one of the og in the begining
One of the reasons why the Matrix looks good today was that it was filmed in 35mm, which is closer to 5K. It’s possible Scream was originally filmed in 35mm.
There should of been 3 killers and stu fake dies like billy so randy is in on it too..but then they betray him and kill him...cause it's their plan he's just helping....obviously that means taking out the scene at the video store and maybe adding 1 more background forgettable girl to their friend group so there's no 5th wheel....but still...theres a way to make that work

Late with this review by a month ! The movie officially turned 25 December 20th Still amazed I watched it so young but loved it My first introduction to Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette Really happy Wes Craven managed to revitalize the slasher genre in the 90s when it was starting to wane Love all these 90s actors and this soundtrack Kevin Williamson knew how to write dialogue for teenagers Equally scary and equally funny deconstructing the horror movie tropes and cliches with tons of meta references New Nightmare was the precursor but this solidified it Very sad how all these murders stemmed from Sidney Prescott's mother but it all ties back Scream also lead to the creation of caller ID on phones Happy I got to dress up for Halloween as Ghostface Super excited for movie 5

It created and inspired other 90s Teen Horror flicks such as Halloween H20, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Faculty, House on Haunted Hill, An American Werewolf in Paris, Urban Legend, Valentine, Final Destination and so countless other copycats horror films.
I was very young when this came out 👀, but I never knew they were much older than the characters they played. They are truly babies in that movie, compared to now.
Not only does the movie not listen to its own lessons, the characters don't listen to their own lessons. After complaining about how the girl always runs upstairs instead of out the front door, what does Sidney do when Ghostface shows up? That was 100% intentional.
and RIP to Wes Craven he was a good director and his memories will live on and it sucks he not directly the new Scream movie that coming out this week since this is his genre and i hope the new scream movie will be good since its a January movie and January movies are usually bad movies
Early reviews have been great & I have faith in the Directing Duo for this one! It's the same guys that directed 2019's Ready or Not that I loved. They seem to have a good understanding of how to balance comedy with horror which is perfect for this franchise!
Scream was not only the movie that got me into the horror genre, it’s the movie that made me fall in love with film in general. This movie means so much to me and it’s one of those movies where even when you know the twist, you can still rewatch it and start noticing the details. KEVIN! PLEASE READ THIS COMMENT & PLEASE MAKE SCREAM 3 A OPTION FOR A BAD MOVIE ROAST 43:10 currently rewatching this review & I'm so glad Chris brings this up about Scream 3 because I really think that film not only deserves a BAD MOVIE ROAST but NEEDS one. That film is so damn goofy & satirical, it might as well be labeled 'The REAL Scary Movie 3' 😂😂 That shit is BAD, but the story about the film's production is so interesting to hear & read about. From: 1. The original script being scrapped (due to the Columbine Massacre), leading to a new Screenwriter being hired by the Weinsteins (which is A BIG REASON this film needs to be discussed, considering there's a odd & coincidental subplot reveal with a character who's a Movie Producer....) 2. The new Screenwriter was not only unfamiliar with the first two screams, but was only given 6 weeks to write the script, leading to constant re-writes during filming (which only lasted 12 weeks)... & because the new screenwriter had no knowledge of the previous 2 films (& completely discarded Kevin Williamson's outline) the characters of Sidney, Gale & Dewey (& they're personalities) in HIS script had barely any resemblance to the prior appearances of the characters (leading to even more re-writes, this time by Wes Craven himself) & That's just the surface. There's SOOOO MUCH ROAST MATERIAL
Just a note : garage doors did *not* always have those sensors that send the door back up when it detects something in it's path. I was nearly crushed by my parents garage door in the early 90's when no such sensors existed. My dad had to run out to the garage after hearing me scream and had to cut the power to the door because it was just trying to pound my 10 year old body into the cement underneath me lol 🤣
Fun fact: I saw Scary Movie first so the film never had the same effect on me as it did with other people. It's still good tbh but I just never found it that scary, every time I see Ghostface I just think "WAZZUP!!!!"
First horror movie I ever got all the way thru as a kid Edit : Also, I just find it incredibly funny that Billy managed to get Drew Barrymore's character to basically cheat on her boyfriend in essence over the phone
@@AceOfSevens na, Stu was more erratic, Billy was more of the smooth Talker. Listen to the clip of Stu on the phone after Billy's in jail. You'll see the difference
Sidney doesn't know the killer messes with people. Casey & Steve died, so no one knows about the phone calls on the Ghost Face costume until after the scene where Sidney escapes.
I read the original Scream Script by Kevin Williamson. The daytime ghostface appearances were described as "something you would miss on a first viewing" there were also a lot more scenes of ghostface stalking Sidney. I just thought that was interesting.
While Scream was a particularly clever example of characters being aware of the genre they're in, it didn't invent the idea, and it wasn't even the first example in horror. For instance, Fright Night (1985) did it with vampire movies. Also, if you're into REALLY old movies, see Arsenic & Old Lace (1944), which kind of did to thriller plays what Scream did to slasher movies.
The "they don't look like teens" critique always annoys me because the same people who say that shit are the first to jump on a child actor for not being as good as an adult actor in the movie.
Killers of the Scream films: Scream 1- Sidney’s Boyfriend and Boyfriend’s Best Friend. Scream 2- Sidney’s Ex Boyfriend’s Mother and fellow colleague. Scream 3- Sidney’s long lost half brother. Scream 4- Sidney’s cousin and cousin’s lover. Scream 5- 🤔...We Shall See.
This is what happens in the movie! The movie begins with Ghostface attacking Tara (Jenna Ortega) and leaves her for dead, but she actually survives. Tara's sister Sam (Melissa Berrara) returns to Woodsboro with her boyfriend Richie (Jack Quaid) to care for her. Dewey has tired as sheriff and has been replaced by Judy Hicks. He is close to Judy's son Wes who is also friends with Tara. The Ghostface killer shows up and lures Judy into a trap in broad daylight while she's driving and she's dead. Dewey teaches Wes the rules of survival and decides to call up Gale and Sidney to help him deal with the new killer. Sidney is married living in Chicago, while Gale is living in Los Angeles after separating from Dewey. Ghostface targets Tara at the hospital. Dewey goes to her rescue, but ends up killed. YES, ONE OF THE MAIN TRIO FINALLY DIES. SHOCKING. People did say he was the most likely candidate. Anyway, this enrages Sidney and Gale who vow for revenge. The women, along with Sam, investigate Tara's friends which includes Wes, Tara's friend Amber, Randy Meeks' niece, Chad (Omar Gooding), Chad's girlfriend Liv (Sonia Ben Ammar) and Mindy (Jasmine Savoy-Brown). There's also a dude named Vince (Kyle Gallner) who stalks Liv. They learn that the new Ghostface killer is doing a "Requel", following up on the original killings and all have connections to past victims including Sam who is the secret illegitimate daughter of Billy Loomis! OH WOW! We then come to Stu's house where Liv and her family now live. The killers turn out to be Richie and Amber, secretly in love and wanting to bring the killings to a new generation. Amber is the mastermind though. They plan to frame Sam for the killings. Sidney and Gale have suspected Sam for a while, but realized it was Amber and Richie. The duo kills Wes, Chad, Liv, and Vince. Sam kills Richie, and Sidney kills Amber. Sidney, Gale, Sam, Tara, and Mindy survive to see another day. THE END. No Stu returning, no KIRBY. Kirby is dead people so stop craving her to return. She was stabbed in the gut deep and left to bleed out for a while before help arrived. Jill also tells Dewey she's dead while in hospital and he doesn't correct her, only when she stated Sidney was probably dead too. KIRBY IS DEAD.
Omg I have not watched this movie since I saw it in the cinema back in 1996, date night with my college sweetheart. I loved this movie, loved Neve Campbell and Skeet Ulrich.
The opening may be the most technically brilliant scene of this movie but I honestly think Scream has been a quietly thematically potent film that has only become more relevant in what it says in its third act regsrding patriarchal violence, and the way it so handily disrupts and dismantles that. Scream 2 is also excellent but its stab (haha) at meta commentary relating to blackness in mainstream horror is undercooked compared to the whole series (esp. The original's) conversations around trauma and gender in the slasher subgenre. I think Scream is on a shortlist of the most sexually astute slashers and part of that is how it interrogates sex and violence in its audience. Brilliant stuff.

I saw SCREAM in the theater the Saturday after the premiere. I was 14. Obviously they didn’t care about my age. I grew up with parents who showed me Nightmare on Elm Street and all the best horror so I was somewhat desensitized,
I knew from the start this was a masterpiece.
Now they’ve gotta cover the sequels and Scary Movie
If you notice during Linda Blair's cameo, she's wearing crucifix ear rings.
26:39 Waynes brothers joke
This film was actually Drew Barrymore's comeback. I loved that they broke cinema rules by killing the biggest star that was in that film.
This movie gave us:
One of the most iconic horror villains of all time.
And the fonz as an authority figure
Who dare wins?
Ghostface Killer from the Wu Tang Clan vs. ghostface killer from scream trilogy.
The original will always be a classic. Some of it aged badly (the late 90s aged badly) but I think it’s biggest curse over the years has been the Scary Movie franchise. It’s always in the back of my head when I view certain scenes in the first two scream films
I stand with the Scream film franchise
53:51 was precursor to M. Night Shyamalan's movie Signs when the 👽 came out from the bushes.
"Why's the teacher from my last class..." Marty is this show's true MVP.
That Scene in the
Groceries Store....
It was STRONGLY Hinted, within the Movie, that that was Actually a Prankster, NOT the Real Ghostface(s)/Killers....
Remember All of the Pranksters Dressed Up as Ghostface at the High School, at the High School Bathroom, etc.
No, thats a bad job of strongly hinting. Billy did a better job STRONGLY hinting he was the killer and he wanted s*x
Man as a horror fan I miss Wes Craven. I liked New Nightmare. I’d say it was 3rd behind the original and Dream Warriors. Fill in the rest and put Freddy’s Dead at the end.
The best way to celebrate the new scream movie
Scream did self awarness before it became common for everyone to do. If scream 5 want to duplicate the effect of killing drew barrymore. They gotta kill one of the og in the begining
"I'm starting to get a little woozy here!"
Man this movie got a great remaster! Looks like it was shot yesterday
The 4k looks fabulous. The bluray, not as much.
One of the reasons why the Matrix looks good today was that it was filmed in 35mm, which is closer to 5K. It’s possible Scream was originally filmed in 35mm.
@@reikun86 That Matrix 4k looks so good. And I believe Scream WAS shot on 35mm
Fun fact: Rose actually made it through the cat door when filming. They had to pin her shirt so she would give a convincing struggle.
I just found that out recently
That IS Linda Blair cameoing as a reporter in the film. It's on IMDb.
You spend the whole movie thinking Billy is the red herring then at the end realize he actually is one of the killers. Brilliant execution.
There should of been 3 killers and stu fake dies like billy so randy is in on it too..but then they betray him and kill him...cause it's their plan he's just helping....obviously that means taking out the scene at the video store and maybe adding 1 more background forgettable girl to their friend group so there's no 5th wheel....but still...theres a way to make that work
To this day I still get scenes from Scream confused with Scary Movie.
Same lol!
Lmao exactly! 😂 the opening act, Brenda at the theatre eating kitchen then getting stabbed by everyone bcuz she was being loud and annoying everyone 😅 and so many more scenes
I don't
Late with this review by a month !
The movie officially turned 25 December 20th
Still amazed I watched it so young but loved it
My first introduction to Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette
Really happy Wes Craven managed to revitalize the slasher genre in the 90s when it was starting to wane
Love all these 90s actors and this soundtrack
Kevin Williamson knew how to write dialogue for teenagers
Equally scary and equally funny deconstructing the horror movie tropes and cliches with tons of meta references
New Nightmare was the precursor but this solidified it
Very sad how all these murders stemmed from Sidney Prescott's mother but it all ties back
Scream also lead to the creation of caller ID on phones
Happy I got to dress up for Halloween as Ghostface
Super excited for movie 5
I had the biggest crush on Matthew Lillard.
Still bummed you hardly see him in movies these days
You like Shaggy ;)
Bombastic, no jk he was in twin peaks season 3 last I've seen
I remember when this movie came out. I knew nothing about it. The movie we wanted to see was sold out, and we snuck into this one. I loved it!
What movie were you supposed to see ?
@@replicacity92 probably Independence Day
Biggest hint that Billy was the killer was in the soundtrack when he first introduced the song that's playing is Don't fear the reaper 💀
A 90s Gem!!! 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💯💯💯Scream reinvented the horror genre and breathed new life in the slasher flick!!! It created and inspired other 90s Teen Horror flicks such as Halloween H20, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Faculty, House on Haunted Hill, An American Werewolf in Paris, Urban Legend, Valentine, Final Destination and so countless other copycats horror films.
The Friends reference took me out🤣🤣
It was so on spot tho! 🤣
@@ishathompson8439 🤣🤣🤣
I was very young when this came out 👀, but I never knew they were much older than the characters they played. They are truly babies in that movie, compared to now.
42:55 It's always funny when someone dies from a TV on their head. See also Grosse Pointe Blank and Nightmare on Elm Street 3 The Dream Warriors
Not only does the movie not listen to its own lessons, the characters don't listen to their own lessons. After complaining about how the girl always runs upstairs instead of out the front door, what does Sidney do when Ghostface shows up? That was 100% intentional.
Tatum had no choice but to try go through the cat door as Ghostface was standing by the door.
and RIP to Wes Craven he was a good director and his memories will live on and it sucks he not directly the new Scream movie that coming out this week since this is his genre and i hope the new scream movie will be good since its a January movie and January movies are usually bad movies
Early reviews have been saying it's really good!
Early reviews have been great & I have faith in the Directing Duo for this one! It's the same guys that directed 2019's Ready or Not that I loved. They seem to have a good understanding of how to balance comedy with horror which is perfect for this franchise!
@@VannotheDawn1 yeah that good and I just saw it and I really did enjoy it too
@@DevilFan669 that's what's up! Glad u enjoyed it!
Please review the "Friday" movie franchise. Please
Can y’all please do Nightmare on Elm St 2, Freddy’s Revenge. Billy and Corey would have a field day with it
The movie about coming out lol
Scream was not only the movie that got me into the horror genre, it’s the movie that made me fall in love with film in general. This movie means so much to me and it’s one of those movies where even when you know the twist, you can still rewatch it and start noticing the details.
One of my all time favorite movies and I’m excited for the new one with the Ready or Not directors at the helm and I’ve heard good things so far.
R.I.P. Wes Craven (1939-2015)
KEVIN! PLEASE READ THIS COMMENT & PLEASE MAKE SCREAM 3 A OPTION FOR A BAD MOVIE ROAST
43:10 currently rewatching this review & I'm so glad Chris brings this up about Scream 3 because I really think that film not only deserves a BAD MOVIE ROAST but NEEDS one. That film is so damn goofy & satirical, it might as well be labeled 'The REAL Scary Movie 3' 😂😂
That shit is BAD, but the story about the film's production is so interesting to hear & read about. From:
1. The original script being scrapped (due to the Columbine Massacre), leading to a new Screenwriter being hired by the Weinsteins (which is A BIG REASON this film needs to be discussed, considering there's a odd & coincidental subplot reveal with a character who's a Movie Producer....)
2. The new Screenwriter was not only unfamiliar with the first two screams, but was only given 6 weeks to write the script, leading to constant re-writes during filming (which only lasted 12 weeks)... & because the new screenwriter had no knowledge of the previous 2 films (& completely discarded Kevin Williamson's outline) the characters of Sidney, Gale & Dewey (& they're personalities) in HIS script had barely any resemblance to the prior appearances of the characters (leading to even more re-writes, this time by Wes Craven himself)
& That's just the surface.
I remember being obsessed with this movie as a kid. Such a fun movie! Great review, per usual! Lol
50:18 Sydney is Safe!
41:10 Henry big mouth death
Henry Winkler should have known he was going to die Freddy Krugger was cleaning outside his office.
Drew was the one believing in the script, shopping it around, secretly being the first producer
I've seen this movie a million times and I never noticed ghost face creeping in the background until this review.. I'll be dammed 🙃
🧡🦇
When I saw the thumbnail I assumed you guys were doing scary movie, hopefully in the future
Fun fact: I saw Scary Movie first so the film never had the same effect on me as it did with other people. It's still good tbh but I just never found it that scary, every time I see Ghostface I just think "WAZZUP!!!!"
Have to admit i cant look at david arqutte and not think special officer doofy 😂 even when he's in a different movie
The Scream voice is also the voice of MOJO JoJo.
I love listening to double toasted at work 😂
This movie did so much for the Horror Genre back in its day, still good to watch to this day
Pretty much rescued the genre.
Duh
Juicy is right Linda Blair does cameo as the obnoxious reporter!
They look like high school seniors. LOL
Not new nightmare slander before the review begins lol
MTV Movie Award winner for best film. It was a phenomenon.
First horror movie I ever got all the way thru as a kid
Edit : Also, I just find it incredibly funny that Billy managed to get Drew Barrymore's character to basically cheat on her boyfriend in essence over the phone
Pretty sure that was Stu.
@@AceOfSevens na, Stu was more erratic, Billy was more of the smooth Talker. Listen to the clip of Stu on the phone after Billy's in jail. You'll see the difference
Scary Movie did a good job spoofing this
Sidney doesn't know the killer messes with people.
RIP Wes Craven.
I think the whole "hiring old people to play teenagers" was a purposeful part of the joke, not a mistake in the casting
*malibus most wanted* bad movie review 🍿 would be 🔥 🔥
You got it
@@stevenpina1983 yeah I was happy as hell when it dropped
I love the scream movies. I just wish they had a memorable score like the Halloween, and Jason movies.
Speaking of slashers, it's not too late to do a retro review/roast of Jack Frost 🧐 I'd also love to see you guys talk about Final Destination
Killers of the Scream films:
Scream 1- Sidney’s Boyfriend and Boyfriend’s Best Friend.
Scream 2- Sidney’s Ex Boyfriend’s Mother and fellow colleague.
Scream 3- Sidney’s long lost half brother.
Scream 4- Sidney’s cousin and cousin’s lover.
Scream 5- 🤔...We Shall See.
Scream 5- Sidney’s weed dealer
Sidney’s dad maybe? I don’t know lol.
I think for the first time it will have nothing to do with the old cast but they take it personally.
I just got the notification that the Miami showing has been cancelled, I can't just visit Orlando :(
This is what happens in the movie!
By the way, Rose McGowan actually could fit through that cat door. She had to fake not being able to to make the take... Wonderful review!
20:29 You know yo ass too old to be going to school this wayyy *CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP* 🤣🤣
