Fantastic - among the best performances of this magnificent work [which, under its guise of wise neo-classicism and seemingly conservative turn (by Bartók's standards) is utterly innovative from behind the mask] - incredible, Röntgen-like clarity, penetrating power; purity only Bartók - and Kocsis and this magnificant orchestra with its great conductor -could touch. Dear Zoltán, I wish you were among us still - because you ARE...

100% agreed. The tempo in the 3rd mvt. is what it should be.

I can't imagine a better performance of this marvelous work. What a tragedy this brilliant pianist and musician too soon left us!

I first heard this in an old performance he did with the Hungarian State Radio Orchestra on the fabulous set of Hungaroton records spanning Barton’s entire oeuvre. He plays it even better here. One of the greats without a doubt, and probably the greatest Bartok interpreter ever. Thank God for him, and for the wonderful inspiration he’s been to me in my life. Rest in peace, maestro. And thank you so much.

No one plays the 3rd movement like Kocsis did. Just stunning.

A wonderful performance - and what a great musician Kocsis was. And how sad that he was taken from us long before his time.

Final movement is most exciting and propulsive of any performance I've ever heard!

This seems to me to be a magnificent "goodbye" to the old masters from Bach to Mozart, and Beethoven, as Bartók was dying when he wrote it, and wrote it as a farewell mostly to his wife, Ditta, also a concert pianist. Nature was his great love, second only to Music in its highest sense, and he was a botanist as well as one of the greatest of 20th century composers-and you can hear his total connection with, and passionate love fore, the natural world in his music.

There's not a note in this masterpiece or in any of Bartok's music that sounds like or owes anything to Schoenberg.

@@remomazzetti8757 You are so right! I don't know why I said Schoenberg! I may have been thinking of his Violin Concerto #2 (another utterly magnificent masterpiece), which makes fun of 12-tone music in at least one place. He always had a joke somewhere, like making fun of Shostakovich's 7th Symphony in the Concerto for Orchestra. Thanks for your feedback. I have corrected my error.

Zoltán was the reincarnation of Bartók. And he supported Ferencváros. RIP!
