  • In this sewing tutorial I show you how to save yourself some money and make your own arm & leg warmers for a baby or toddler! These warmers can cost upwards of $12 in the store or from an online retailer. Using a pair of crew socks I bought at the dollar store I show you how to make your own! This is a great beginner project and requires only a few materials: a pair of socks, scissors, a sewing machine/thread.
    When used as leg warmers they make for very easy diaper changes. Once you make a pair you will want to sew more of these for friends! They make for cute baby shower gifts too. Go find a cute or funky pair of socks and make one yourself!

    @mysweetsgrandma I would recommend buying some jersey knit stretch fabric and making them from that. For the stirrups you can just attache a strip of bare elastic or put it in a fabric casing if you want.

    @TheCraftyGemini Thank you! Yes I used a double threaded needle. I think what I'll do is use that end on his ankle and see how it works, then the chunkier part of his leg will have the stretchier end. Thanks again for the fast reply..You rock!

    @jdleland I just bought a pair of socks from the dollar store. They look like regular adult size crew socks. My baby was 5 months old in the video. for toddler I would use knee length socks so it covers more of their legs.

    @osbkids Yea, zigzag works well for stretchy materials. For that particular pair of socks the straight stitch worked fine and didn't pop when stretched.... :o)

  • @TheCraftyGemini
    @TheCraftyGemini  12 лет назад

    You can use bigger/longer socks. Like the funky colored socks they sell for kids that are knee-high length. Hope that helps!

  • @TheCraftyGemini

    just a plain 'ol straight stitch. Never done it by hand but it may work if the stitches are sewn to allow for some stretch without popping. Good luck!

    @paprichaat5 Congrats on getting a new machine.. as to which one to get: There is no set answer because there are SO MANY choices... they all have different stitch options, bells & whistles, etc. You should do some research online to see what you need for the type of projects you will be sewing. For example, embroidery and quilting projects will require a machine that offers those functions. Hope that helps.

  • @TheCraftyGemini
    @TheCraftyGemini  13 лет назад

    @glitterminx83 The socks themselves should be made from a stretchable material so your hand stitching should still allow it to do some stretching. With hand stitching I think it depends on if you used one thread or a double threaded needle to sew it, how close together were your stitches, etc. My main concern would be that the hand stitching would not hold up to the stretching around babies thighs and legs. Hope this helps. :o)

    Thanks. I think 1/8" would be too narrow. I think in this video I just used the edge of my presser foot as the guide. But 1/4" - 3/8" would work nicely. Have fun!

    I have a question..I made some but had to do it by hand sewing, i'm not great at it but I thought I would try. The part I sewed doesn't stretch..is it because it was done by hand? The baby isn't here yet so I can't try them on him but I think it will work for a little while with my sewing end on his ankle. Thank you so much for a wonderful tutorial! Your son is so cute..and his chunky legs, Ahhh! :)

    @paprichaat5 I have 7 different machines and they are different brands and cost from $70 - $2000. Go to bestcovery(dot)com and search for best budget sewing machine so you can see the ones that rank at the top for quality but are still not super expensive. I like Janome and Brother.

    @TheCraftyGemini i will probably do quilting as the most crafty thing...but its just for simple stitches like in this leg warmer tutorial and making pillow cases, womens straight leg pants, baby clothes/ burp cloths. i am a starter and i dont know where to start. please give me a suggestion of something that you use maybe. i did some research and i was even more confused b/ the prices of machines range from 99-$600. its so confusing.
