So, I tried this drama on viki a couple of days ago. The intro is great and is stuck in my head for almost a week now, and I checked out the drama partly because I love Chinese historical dramas, but also because I love history and GL. (I was also curious how far in the GL romamce direction the plot would go! ) I really wanted to like this show, but there are a couple of gripes I have with it, and to be honest with a lot of Chinese series set in "1930s Shanghai": (it's all related to historical inaccuracies, but there are many issues, so it really bugs me and I'm curious what Chinese people think about this) 1. Why on Earth do they sterilise the poverty out of the setting? Shanghai wasn't America in the 1930s - most people didn't drive cars, there were many cramped apartment blocks and horrible living conditions, in 1927 there was even a massive workers strike organised by communists that was brutally crushed by Chiang Kai-Shek's Guomindang and a local criminal gang allied to him, resulting in thousands of innocent workers being killed. There was poverty, starvation, organised crime and many other issues surrounding the common people of Shanghai at the time, so why do modern Chinese series make it look so stable and so much like 1930s Manhattan or Paris??? And this can't be the Communist party's doing, cause depicting the actual horrible poverty during the Minguo (republican era) and the massive corruption of the Guomindang would actually be both more realistic and benefit them from a propaganda standpoint, so it must be the film makers? The studios? Why does almost every series in contemporary China over-glamourize 1930s Shanghai and pretend the poverty and social unrest didn't exist, when the country was literally split and carved up by warlords??? 🤔 I also watched "Street Angel", (馬路天使) an old Shanghai Black & White movie from 1937 that you can find with English subtitles on RUclips, and the Shanghai portrayed there is very different from the glitzy version you see in this drama! 2. Still related to point 1, but why is there so much jazz? Jazz was a staple of WORKING CLASS BLACK AMERICAN CULTURE in the 1930s - white Americans looked down on it (because a lot of them were far more racist back then) and so very little of it got even to Europe, let alone China! Most people at parties were dancing to Piano music, Waltzes, Tangos or other slower styles of music - probably some jazz gramophone disks did reach and were played in Shanghai back then, but there certainly wouldn't be Chinese jazz musician bands like in this series, and jazz wouldn't be liked by most of the rich Europeans and Americans living in the French concesion, (because they'd consider it a "black/low class/trashy" style of music) so it's extremely unlikely it would've spread even to parties hosted by the Chinese capitalists/Guomindang officials... 3. Speaking of racist westerners, why is it that rich Chinese in this drama can actually buy custom-made fashion or other items from Western designers as if it's 2020? You Yi's husband gifts her a pair of shoes supposedly custom-made by a famous French designer for her birthday, which would 99% be impossible at the time! Not only because not that many Chinese could afford it and intercontinental shipping done by people, not governments or large corporations, was extremely rare (and probably very expensive), but many western designers at the time would outright refuse a commission from China, because, shocker, most non-communists in the west still saw "The Chinese" as an inferior "race"! (there's a reason why only the Soviet Union helped China even during Sun Yat-Sen technologically, why America banned Chinese Americans from voting for a very long time, and why the western powers gave German Tianjin to Japan after ww1, not to China...) Literally the west would never even be able to complain to China if China shows more openly the ways in which the west was racist and imperialist towards it at the time, because that's the historical truth! 4. This is a far smaller gripe, but sometimes the dramas use late 1930s or even 1940s car models when it's supposed to be the 20s or early 30s - look at actual pictures from the time, even in a richer city like Paris, and you'll mostly see much smaller cars than in this. Finally, I still like the show as a work of fiction, but all the historical inaccuracies that seem to try to whitewash the poverty in China at the time, the Guomindang's corruption and oppression, as well as the pretending that most westerners at the time were not racist towards Chinese people and treated them as equals, (they very much were and didn't) which Chinese people would obviously know even more about than I do, (I'm just a European history enthusiast who read quite a bit on China and loves Chinese culture, but I've never even been there nor do I speak Mandarin at more than a basic level) really stand out to me! Can any Chinese person explain why you think Couple of Mirrors or other new series set in 1930s Shanghai do these things and glamourize the period so much? I would appreciate your opinion very much! 😊
I thought they were going to become a couple then something bad happened she went to jail she killed someone. Frigging sent roses to the girl that had a baby so was sad about that and I thought they were going to be a couple and whatever but then that ended up not going according to plan so I was sad about that.

But since filmed in China and China has laws against same sex couples in film they probably will only be depicted as really really really close friends. It's a shame that their are still homophobic countries like China.
