Tbf, the example in the beginning (Chelsea) shows that a lot of money doesn't win you anything. You still need players that can play well together and a manager with a strategy that fits the time. Current examples are Stuttgart in Germany and Girona in Spain, who over perform in every statistic without spending big money.
@@roni4138 they're talking about how TV rights revenues are distributed. American sports leagues tend to do very equal distribution, most European leagues reward the winners way more than the team finishing 15th. American leagues are very socialist in terms of making sure every team gets rewarded regardless of performance, whereas the European leagues tend to be very cutthroat in punishing teams that don't perform. The prem is an outlier among European leagues for having relatively equal distribution of TV rights revenues, and it also hands out large parachute payments to relegated clubs.
The Fullham-Chelsea game that ended 0-0 wasnt dissapointing. Because of the fact that chelsea is such a bigger club, on paper Chelsea should have destroyed fulham, and gained 3 points so fullham wouldve ended with 0 points. This is also what franchising has done to the LCS - Every team except for maybe TL and C9 just sandbags because they don't actually have to invest in the team or their administration to make money. Which is part of the reason promotion and relegation is so great, except the top clubs in Europe are all so wealthy that relegation is next to impossible. Everton, mentioned in the beginning of the video, is one of the only traditionally wealthy clubs to be in danger of the drop in recent times. They have seriously overspent and underpreformed and are a bit of a meme within the football world.
I would argue part of the English Premiers leagues success is that it has multiple great clubs. LIke France Germany are dominated by 1 club each and Spain 2.
@@n0body550 I wouldn't make fun of school shootings watching a video talking about a school shooting, the context really does matter, it's extremely poor from him.
The NFL really doesn't have a free rider problem the hard cap and floor are so close that every team is trying to win because you can't really save money not winning like in the MLB. Also it has no individual salary cap and no player is going to be close to the team cap like the NBA.
It's a stupid system to give more revenues to the top teams, unless you are the top teams and don't give a fuck. Kind of like capitalism, a few people get so rich they change the rules to suit thier interests at everyone elses expense.
The Australian Football League is probably the best example of the solution to this. Most of, if not all, the clubs are essentially owned by fan shareholders, who buy memberships that get them priority for tickets and such and elect the board members. This actually works financially for a few reasons: -For the most part, The clubs don't own the huge stadiums, so they don't have to pay for the maintenance. -Recruitment is all done through the league with the draft, so they have to be frugal and even with their spending on junior development, as they only get a priority to their own juniors in the draft, instead of automatically getting it. Teams also get draft picks based on performance, so the worst teams get the first picks of the juniors. -There's also decent sized Salary caps, which prevents big spending on massive Talent. -It's also a super niche sport only played here, so there's no bigger league to swipe the most valuable talent away with corrupt salaries. This IS the big league. -All of the Profits go back into the clubs, since there's no Billionaire trying to turn a profit. This has lead to the league being one of the most balanced sport's leagues in the world, with almost every club making an exciting run to the finals in the last decade or so.
in Italy the stadium grounds are owned by local municipalities, which leads to having some of the most dilapidated stadiums in the top 5 leagues. San Siro, one of the most iconic European stadiums, is incredibly worn down and old because teams don't want to invest in renovations if they don't own them outright. This is exacerbated by the economic disparity between north and south - Allianz stadium in Turin, one of Italy's most wealthy cities, is one of the very few "modern" Italian grounds. Your first point is great if the local governments can afford state of the art infrastructure. If not, it takes away from ticket sales, fan engagement, and merchandising - poorer clubs will just fall farther and farther behind. Aus rules, as you mentioned, is a niche and homogeneous sport. Football in Europe spans so many cultures and economic zones that implementing rules that cross those gaps is very challenging. Not impossible, but very challenging. FIFA is corrupt as shit though, so that's not really helping much. Germany's Bundesliga implements a fan-owned majority rule like you mentioned, which typically contributes to it being, generally, the most competitive top-5 league in Europe, though they still do have their giants in Bayern Munchen and Borussia Dortmund.
to add to this the a league is in a unique positions as one of the worst leagues to watch in terms of quality and entertainment no promotion and relegation doesn’t help either
