I know it’s kinda hard for foreigners to grasp, but the left right spectrum doesn’t really exist in Bangladesh. The dynamic between AL and BNP is a pure power struggle. Both hold contempt for democracy, both don’t care about the people, and both have tolerated systematic corruption.

I visited Bangladesh in 2003 and 2006 to work in connection with NGOs operating there. Two things were clear to me: 1. Most of the population lives in extreme poverty, and 2. Political corruption is endemic. The people are fantastic. It's a shame their leaders are so awful.

The stock market is a complex system that is influenced by a variety of factors, including economic indicators, political events, and global trends. The relationship between policies and the stock market can be complex and multifaceted, and it can take time for the full effects of policies to be reflected in market trends. Caretaker government played a significant role in promoting fair and transparent elections in Bangladesh. Its establishment marked a departure from the traditional system of direct rule by an incumbent government, introducing an impartial body dedicated to upholding the integrity of the electoral process. While the system was not without its flaws, its overall impact was positive, contributing to increased voter participation, reduced political violence, and improved public perceptions of elections.

As a Bangladeshi citizen, it's concerning to see western countries showing such interest in the elections of a far-off south Asian nation like Bangladesh. Typically when the USA gets involved in another country's affairs, there's usually a clear motive behind it. From what I've heard, there are claims that the BNP has struck deals with the US government, allowing the setup of US military bases on the Saint Martin islands. There's also talk of the BNP actively plotting to overthrow the current government. Throughout history, the USA has been known to orchestrate regime changes, replacing governments that didn't align with their preferences.
The concern now is whether a similar scenario might unfold in Bangladesh. The USA has its own significant issues to contend with, and we shouldn't be a cause for concern on their agenda.

I saw everything by my own eyes because the voting centre was a school(madrasa) compound with a 1 storied building. They also forced and threatened us to shut of our buildings CCTV camera since it was just beside the centre. They shouted at anyone and everyone who went to roof that day to see the voting and there was less then 600 hundred voters who voted with a centre of supposedly 5000 voters and they gave report of more then 80% poll. And the worst part is every criminal is now a member of Awami League and do whatever they wants while the police just sit and watch everything sometimes for the fear of losing their job and sometimes for money. Im a 19 year old from Bangladesh.
The way our govt operates is literally like the Iranian govt. Our freedom of speech/expression or political freedom is worse than that of russia
It feels depressing and dystopian when i see one thing happening around me and a completely 180° being said by the govt and all the shitty media that goes like "according to the govt" or "the govt has been accused of". I get that's how professional reporting works but they dont use those soft words for iran or china.
In 2020 election i remember my dad getting a call and he learned that both his and my mom's vote has already been given. We all were a bit shocked because none of us even left the house that day but it was not very surprising. The same happened to our next apartment neighbors.
In my 8th grade final exam (its an important exam and we call it board exam) the teacher came and stood infront of the class and told us to write down all the multiple choice questions. Basically gave away all the answers. Just so people can know that yeah Bangladesh is going forward in terms of education and grades.
I could go on for hours but i dont have the energy to do so, the people's mentality is shit and until it changes and pressures from outside govts increases, nothing will change

Instead of a caretaker government, which sounds like a gap in overall governance, how about a Permanent Electoral Commission whose sole purpose is to organise and verify elections and election-related activities?

    • @ahmedistiak

      Nice idea but in theory.
You'd see current party loyalist being put in all places of power in electoral commission (whose loyalty lies not with the people but the party itself) - just as we have now - a loyalist toothless sham electoral comission - so even though we have actual witness proof and even video evidences of electoral rigging - those same culprit candidates still gets elected nonetheless without any consequence, not even a single penalty or requiring any sort of voting recast or reelection.
At least the caretaker government offer more neutrality on the matter.

As a Bangladeshi, I am very concerned due to the US poking their nose this time. On the one hand, I have seen the corruption in the AL government and how they abuse power and would be glad to have them replaced by someone better. At the same time, the AL did manage to get some good things done like projects such as the Padma Bridge, Dhaka Mass Transit Metro rail, Chittagong double line, Karnaphuli tunnel and other projects as well as modernization of the Army and Navy (Air Force is still neglected) and I am not confident that the BNP would be competent enough to keep things going forward as they have often undid many positive developments of their opposition purely out of spite like the Mig-29 case where they stopped the purchase of advanced fighter jets decades ago when the BAF needed them. Plus, if BNP comes into power with US help, we might see them employ the infamous capitalist shock doctrine to cut down public welfare and allocate taxes to helping big private industries and elites, like how the US did in Iraq after its occupation or in Russia after the Soviet Collapse which led to the rise of the corrupt Russian oligarchy.

PS, I don’t know if you mentioned this but it’s very important. Awami League is a more secularist alliance while BNP has always relied on the Islamist parties mainly the JIB (Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh) party to rally the grassroots campaigns. Also Tareq Zia was terribly tortured during jail time under the caretaker government so he’s almost physically incapable of energizing the campaigns. Also, the law to scrap the caretaker government actually had the blessing of the BNP alliance since both Awami and BNP leaders were jailed/detained.

Few facts conveniently ignored here. Khalida Zia was the wife of a military dictator who is called Zia of the east drawing parallel to Zia ul haq of Pakistan. He allowed fundamental and radical islam to flourish in a Bengali society. Today if Zia's BNP comes to power you'll see a rise in Radical Islamism in Bangladesh and they will be no different than Hasina in terms of freedom pf speech or crackdown on political opponents.

Her government shut down many media and restricted existing media's independence. These media mostly tell the stories of the success of the government.
