So are we gonna pretend that expansion fatigue isnt real, that 2015 migrant crisis didn't happen and that France Netherlands and Austria haven't yet lifted expansion ban? I think there are now 6 or more states waiting EU to permit them to join in the limbo, last member was Croatia in 2013, so logical conclusion is that this is no more than an empty promise.

@@tomlxyz My point exactly, EU is not a country club, its highly regulated economic union riddled with heavy bureaucracy, for a country to join it must do extensive and very expensive reforms that are very unpopular for the citizens. Since politician job is to win elections and stay in power those reforms are in 90% half done and badly implemented examples(Romania Croatia Hungary Bulgaria) Because of this there is consensus in EU that no country will be allowed without stict evidence that reforms are implemented properly. This can create a several decade tiresome process that can be seen in Serbia, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, if you think this limbo is good just feel free to visit any of these countries and see for yourself the futility of this process, its a fools errand...

The United States wouldn't qualify for the EU even if it was in Europe.
It would need to get rid of the death penalty and it seems that
a lot of Republicans and some Democrats love the death penalty,
possibly because they see executing people as part of their fundamentalist "Christian" ideology.
As well the United States shouldn't qualify because it's not really a full fledged democracy.
If it gets rid of voter suppression, gerrymandering, the electoral college, the absurd policy of having two senators for every state and having partisan state party members run elections differently in every state and gave full control of federal elections to an unbiased, neutral election commission using standard rules everywhere in the country then it might qualify but those things are very unlikely to all happen within a century.
Also, if members of the EU are nervous about a country as big as Turkey joining the EU then they will also be nervous about having a huge country with a huge economy such as the United States join. I'm sure they would worry about some European industries being wiped out by American competition.

If we use the word "Geographically" it means we use "Geography" to describe something, and "Geographically" there is no separate continent of Europe, why? Because continents are divided according to major tectonic plates and there is no separate European tectonic plate, purely "Geographically" there exists the Eurasian continent.
The true division of Europe and Asia is not geographic, it is subcontinental at best and that's also as arbitrary as it can get, otherwise, it is mostly political, geopolitical, and cultural/historical/religious.
Both Georgia and Armenia are European because they are 2 of the most ancient Christian countries in the world, even if you forget religion and don't pay attention to it (even though Christianity today is largely European religion) it is actually not about religion at all, but whatever culture it brings, Protestant, Catholic, or Orthodox doesn't matter as some of the major things for all Christians is the same, thus the closest people for Georgians and Armenians are Europeans.
Now historically, Georgia and Armenia even though both struggled like nobody else on this planet, still have vastly different histories, Armenia peaked very early, while Georgia peaked in the Middle Ages, both followed feudalistic rule that is exclusively European type of ruling. Due to the coast, Georgia had very early influence from ancient Greeks and much better relations with the Roman Republic and later the Roman Empire, during the Byzantine times relations were changing, but it was the same sphere of influence and Armenians had a significant population in Anatolia too.
This narrative of "Oh, they're not Europe" is pretty dumb, whoever mentions this can be labeled as an idiot, cause they know nothing about geography, history, religion, cultures, politics, geopolitics, and so on.
One thing though which is geographic and it won't go away is that Armenia has no sea coast unlike Georgia or Cyprus, I don't see it ever becoming a member until Georgia becomes a member and good for them as even though Georgia struggles right now it is still much closer to the EU.

    • @MW_Asura
      @MW_Asura Месяц назад +2

The problem is that the government is full of ex-regime members, overt or covert. Since its independence no Armenian leader was truly pro Western, those who decided to look towards the West were killed in the October 27th parliament attack in 1999. An attack that many respected experts in Armenia belive has Russian fingerprints on it.
Basically any government that wants to finally break free from thr Russian shackles has to fight 30 years of institutional and business ties, and mindsets, not an easy task considering that Russia is using neighboring Azerbaijan's oil dictator Aliyev as a blunt tool against Armenia. With every pro EU move, Aliyev ramps up new territorial demands and threatens war. However it seems that the public demand for change is too big to be silenced by threats and coercion.

      - first Armenia has to formally ask the EU if they may start the joining process.
      - then every EU member has to grant that status.
      - then Armenia has to comply to the Copenhagen criteria
      - and then every member has to finally accept them as a new member.
and all those steps will take a lot of time. probably at least 15 years.
(if Russia doesn't decide to invade them next)

@@TheBooban because in the long run even those "poor" places will strengthen the (European) Union. more citizens means more power on the world stage.
and the EU needs that power to stay sovereign instead of becoming a vassal of the US, Russia or China.
and with time those "poor" nations can and will become better. both for their citizens (quality of living etc) and as a member of the Union.
look at Poland, when they became part of the Union they were decades behind (North-Western) Europe, and now they are on track to become a better place to be than the UK (if the current trend continues for the next 15 to 20 years).
that shows that sometimes the richer members have to support the less well of nations to strengthen/benefit the whole Union.
it will take money and effort, but in time those nations become assets to the Union.

Another thing why the EU needs Caucasus and especially, Georgia as it has a sea coast and connection with the EU states is that the EU is heavily dependent on others, some EU countries were heavily dependent on Russia a few years ago, some are dependent on African countries, some imports also go through Turkey.
The thing is that you can never trust Russia, any type of dependence on Russia is a tool in their hands to punish you. African countries are heavily influenced by Russia and China lately, they're thrown into economic black hole by China and sooner or later they'll be in huge debt, increasing Chinese influence and control. Turkey is historically a geopolitical "player" like literally a player of many sides, they drift around and choose with whom to side, even today they seemingly are on Ukraine's side, but some shady things happen. I also believe Turkey will never become an EU member and it has nothing to do with Islam or geography, Turkey is simply too big both as an economy and population and it'll significantly shift power balance in the EU that Germany and France will never want, while Georgia and Armenia are small and can't do something like that.
The only other way for the EU to get imports from Asia, including some necessary resources are through the Caucasus and Georgia's sea coast. Even better if the EU contacts Central Asian countries that have shit ton of resources and instead of further strengthening big boys in the region the EU pays for resources to Central Asian countries, this is the best outcome for the EU in many ways, as the EU gets way cheaper resources and it can't be used as a tool against the EU and at the same time they'll strengthen Central Asian countries that are contested lands between China and Russia.
I mean, you just name a resource and Central Asian countries have it, gas, oil, uranium? Azerbaijan if democratized also has shit ton of resources, Georgia if properly developed can generate incredible amount of electricity in hell of a lot of "green" ways.

It is a good thing for Europe that Turkiye has large lands, a large population and a large economy. But as you said, in such a situation, France and Germany, which are leaders in European politics, will not be happy with us Turks coming and getting ahead of them. This unity is not possible, especially with the increasing conservatism and fascism in Europe. It is not a problem for us, but what will happen if this attitude of Europe does not change and relations between Turkiye and Russia increase? Will they beg America to "help us"? This is not a threat, just the passengers on the ship named 'Europe' will watch their captains (Germany and France) sink the ship.

But for this, Armenia has to solve all the issues, I'm doubt that this country has no corruption issues. Corruption is a barrier many countries had in their journey to EU. Russia didn’t have to do anything. Legally, even Armenia didn’t recognise Karabakh as a part of Armenia. The western stooge Pashinyan just surrendered Karabakh to Azerbaijan, as was his plan all along, and conveniently blamed Russia for it allowing him to push the western agenda through.

As much as I'd love Armenia to join the EU, fact of the matter is, it's just not happening unless Georgia also joins and subsequently creates a semblance of a maritime bridge between them and the rest of the Union through the Black Sea -- and even then, I don't even know if Georgia even has a genuine maritime border with Romania/Bulgaria thanks to the Russia/Turkey sandwich in there, so it's likely still flimsy at best.

    • @haykk5375

I agree that Georgia and Armenia should join together. All Black Sea countries have unhindered access to it for communications, so it would be a direct link to the EU for both countries.

The thing about the Black Sea access is I don't just mean communications, but transportation too; the Schengen treaties are among the most important aspects of the European Union, and the only EU country that isn't part of it, Ireland, is only as such because they chose to opt-out, not because they were denied it.

I’m glad to see they’re taking measures to break away from Russia, however I doubt they’re anywhere close to joining the EU. As for the EU, it still has its own internal problems, so bringing in Armenia would cause further issues. Also, I think the EU should somehow prioritise bringing in the Balkan states as it would make much more sense.

Armenia is a part of Europe in every sense of the word except for MAYBE geography (South Caucasus could be defined as Europe as well). Armenia has always been part of the broader European Christian civilization group, being intimately connected with the Byzantine sphere and so on. Geography isn't everything. Like with Georgia, they are european christian outposts outside of traditional Europe. Unlike Turkey, which while holding a part of geographic Europe, are certainly not a part of the European civilization.
