I don't know how I came across this channel but when I saw the truck my heart skipped a beat. when I was 14 my grandfather had a stroke and all he wanted to do was get his father's old truck going again. it was almost exactly the same as your Mater. I'm 57 . im the only granddaughter who liked working on vehicles. my grandfather had me doing a lot of the work because his left arm was affected by the stroke.lm really enjoying your
    videos. you guys are doing
AMAZING. I can't wait to see you drive it down the road.
    LOVE THE COLOR ;)

My First viewing of your video but I enjoyed watching you shoot backwards.
I painted my first car at 14 years old, 2 tone, Red & White on a 1954 Buick 2 door hard top.
In 1963 I used automotive enamel which was preaty much the standard for the time.
The car owner was amazed !
My father who was a retired master painter, was empressed.
I question why you start at the bottom close to you rather than at the top and draw toward yourself ?
My self as well as most painters I have seen always start at the top and work down, no matter what is being painted.
    Even a house.
As well as start at a point farthest away and draw closer to them.
This prevents dragging the air hose over wet paint and allowing you to put better coverage over the light mist already started at the point closest to you.
Also why did you not ( cut in ) the areas that you will move over with your wide sweeps ?
The grill suround, under and around the hood edges, the drops and under edges of the running boards, the door openings as well as the door jams.
Maybe you were taught a differant way !
Also. after you shoot your primer you can mist with black, then when you block scratch sand the primer it shows any dents you may have missed in prep. allowing you to work them before start your final color coats.
This is especially important with a metalic color because matching dry metalic is a bitch and will usually leave a noticable ring around where you sanded !
I hope you take this as helpful tips from an old Hot Rod Builder.
I will soon be 72 years old and am still building cars of my dreams.
And I do all of it !
From the ground ( Garage Floor actually ) up.
Designing, Welding, metal fab, metal finish, upholstery and paint.
And I don't have a paint booth either.
I do not build my own engines anymore simply because it is just not something I enjoy.
I have a friend with a machine shop do the engines as that is what he enjoys doing.
I have a house full of trophys from a lot of car shows, so I guess I did something right.
Enjoy what you are doing, It will show in the finished product !
    Be Safe and well
    I

I'm an outside painter. When you wet sand and buff, it will look amazing. That is an art in itself. Hard to use sandpaper on brand new paint. All the dust and orange peel goes away. It will look perfect. Have faith. 👍

Nice job for beginners. Wet sanding single stage might be tricky if there is metallic in it. You could send through the clear binder that is in single stage and exposing the pigments. Then you will have to repaint the area or the panel. Good luck and would love to see the finished truck.

I am a grandmother, but I have been watching the restoration of the 70 yr.old truck you named "Mater" each episode. Now you may think why is she following us ..my Brother just sold his paint and body shop big beautiful shop of 30 plus years and retired to enjoy his car collection in a huge 2 story building. so that's where my intrest came from. So I appreciate the hard work you young men put in Mater. Beautiful beyond words Mater is.: ps my bro started in a garage and driveway.

You’re doing a great job! I like the color and green was a popular color on those old trucks. I’m so happy you didn’t go the patina way with it like a lot of people are doing. In my opinion restoring means bring it back to new or as close as possible including paint.

You'll get better coverage and control if you move faster and overlap closer. Let each coat dry enough to dry and shrink in.
If you want a slicker job. Paint and wetsand the next day with 600 grit wet or dry. Knock the peel down enough and put a light coat and after it tacks up , a wet to full wet coat. If you do it right it will be flat with little peel and you will only have to nub the dirt specks and polish those spots. Works out better for longer lasting finish.
Painted professionally since 1970. Yeah I'm semi old.

Looking great! Painting your own ride is very satisfying. You are always your worst critic. Having touched every inch of that truck, you know where all of the imperfections are. Most people are going to be looking at the whole thing and won't see every little detail. It's going to look great IMO.

I've painted a few outside, less bugs in the morning. As soon as I got some better paint equipment the paint looked a lot better. By equipment I mean 1.8-20 tip for spaying epoxy and 1.5 tip for the single stage, 1.3 or 1.4 for the clear. That helped with the orange peal. eventually I got to work inside- all that painting in the yard was good experience. good luck.

If the vehicle is going to sit outside for any length of time it's a good idea to prime the panelwork with an etch primer before a sanding primer. Otherwise, the sanding primer will suck in moisture through any stone chips or wear spots. Then rust will gradually spread underneath the whole coat. This is ten times more important if you live in an area where they salt roads. Etch primer will give long term protection against rust.

Good movement on your gun overlap is key , but when priming do it in layers. Build and stand the spots a couple times before priming all of it the more they fade the less you can see. Hope this helps on the next one and good talent with practice makes them better and better.

I bought one of those Pilot house Trucks 20 years ago. Fired it up and drove it home 30 miles , No brakes no insurance. The tires had air but where flat spotted from setting. could only go 30 MPh. It had been setting for 35 years. It has the extra windows in the cab. And a Southwind gasoline heater. To much expence and work to put tires and brakes on it. I bought a motor home at a auction for $110.00 and it has a 440 . Drove it home also. Thats the best solution for me is to swap the 48 cab on that motor home chassis.

Like u said a good wet sand to get the orange peal smooth and then hit it with a nice clear coat will look amazing. I suggest buying a cheap tent or build your own to inclose it some how while you clear coat it to get best results. There's vidios out there to build you own for a few hundred bucks some 2x4 and some clear painters tarp. Then wet sand your clear coat and and buff and wax. Great job guys love the videos.

You did a great job! Don’t worry about orange peel. You will always get some orange peel. Then you cut and buff. For the dent Next time hit it with a dust coat of black primer over the grey primer, then block sand to see the high and low spots. I’m no pro either. My 1968 mustang coupe was the first car I painted at 16 I’m about to repaint it but idk if I have the confidence to make videos.

Boys, you're doing fine. Temperature, humidity/moisture, and bugs are going to be your enemy. A little orange peel is nothing, have a look at factory job finishes. The difference is in sanding and cutting once it's down. Keep going strong.

Looks good. Gun setup has a lot to do with orange peel. Pressure, distant, speed, but that's how you learn. Good job guys

For a first time paint job I thought it looks good , as long as your satisfied that's all that matters let that paint cure for a month wet sand and buff with 2000 grit you'll be good to go
