I feel you should also see about sharpenability. A knife that is hard to resharpen in the field is no good once the edge is gone. And edge strength. Does it chip or roll. Stab it into the ground twenty or thirty times. See what the edge looks like after.
disagree would put my life on this knife after what you put in threw and i do own one, now would you put a 200 knife threw all these test including throwing it at a tree till it breaks, keep it sharp and use it as a knife
I have a $35 Cold Steel brand G.I. Tanto in 1055 carbon steel, it has zero looks and gets mocked, but it's almost indestructible. I've seen Esee and other $200+ knives snap like glass, when my $35 knife can be thrown at a tree all day long. It's all about knowing what steel to buy, I'd rather have a reliable knife that's ugly than a big name that can't handle the backwoods. I also have the knife in the video, but haven't run it through survival school on the riverhead.
When I saw you shaving magnesium with the cutting edge instead of the spine edge, I suddenly said to myself "Holy Frkn CRAP ! WTF is he doing ? WHY ??! " I have to point it out and say it's an EPIC BIZZARO FAIL on your part, like cutting meat with a hammer. "NO SOUP FOR YOU !!" Kudos to Eli. GOD Bless the U.S.A. AIRBORNE !
I waited too long to get this $10 knife for less than $12 but I give it a 7 of 10 stars. Super value, neat knife comfortable & light weight! Those crazy holes in the handle (thanks for showing that) would take a star off my rating, Definitely requires a backup to be carried, kinda negating the light weight feature . I do a back-up carry anyway. So good post, convincing me it's a good edge for me & my limited need for a camp knife. To my use it's a bigger cheaper Mora alternative, but I'll likely have a Mora or better somewhere in my pack anyway. Thanks!
Clearance now for $9 and Morakniv Companion for $16.41. Make sure you get the one under clearance (sold & shipped by Walmart). Like Am a zon seems there are some fakes out there.
Looks like a good beater knife especially for the price! The knife held up well for what you put it through. I think it would last most people a lifetime under normal use. (Skinning, light batoning, cutting rope, opening packages etc.) I have found aftermarket leather sheaths for my knives on Amazon but, they will be more than double the price of this knife. Nice destructive testing video!
Excellent test vid! I bought this knife on a whim before seeing this vid and I was also fairly impressed with it. I would love to see you do one of these tests on the Cold Steel Bushman!!
Hey! Thanks for watching and offering your feedback. That means a lot! I will definitely consider making the video as you requested. Where might one buy such a knife?
Mora 511 reg gray color is 9.99 on Amazon. Honestly, it is good enough to be my main knife for my skill level and activities. My collection of overly expensive Bradford, Barkriver, Esee, Coldsteel, BK, and Spyderco knives with better matterials are for my viewing pleasure only. Being an average guy doing average things, I seriously doubt mora 511 or my main knife will be the deciding factor for my survability in any situation concerning my skill level and surroundings. So, I keep some knid of mora knife everywhere.
I own that knife and have had all the same problems you had 2 broke in half one at the tip but for the price I was in. After my last one broke I bought the Esee 6 and will never buy anything else but esee.
I would love to see a torture test on the Cold Steel True Flight. They can be on sale for about $20 or retail up to about $38 and come with a large sheath that I use as a drop sheath and tape back the single snap strap. Thanks.
It's a good knife, the skeletonized holes aren't so bad for the tang, but the two smaller ones up front in the tang definitely weaken it a bit, not sure if they need those there. They should probably get rid of all the holes, drill 2 and inject a plastic handle on it with a rubberized middle, kind of like the cheaper moras, and it'd be a god-tier blade, I'd pay double for one made that way
Scraping magnesium with the edge. Poor edge. Lol. Tough little knife for 10$. You really can't go wrong. I have the carnivore x which was $24.97 at Walmart. Been beating on that thing without mercy for about 7 years. Still in one piece. Sometimes you can get some descent stuff for a few bucks. I'm happy with the value of my camillus knives.
looks like a knife to use when you don't want to screw up your 230 dollar save your life knife. I was trying to think of a circumstance that cause me to abuse a knife the way you did. If I was going to rely on something to save my life I would treat it well.
My neighbor Lucky was walking down the road one day, and some guy was dragging a knife at 60 mph behind his truck. Well needless to say the knife took a bounce, flew up into the air, and stuck in my neighbor's chest. RIP Lucky I miss you buddy 😔🙏.
I'd be willing to bet that the two holes at the head end of the handle are there so that the plastic/rubber injected to make the handle goes through them -- to keep the handle from working away from the point-end of the knife. This is a relatively thin, hollow-ground blade -- a cutter/slicer, not a chopper/splitter. Still a ton of knife for $10 -- I have 3 in various places and use them often.
I was most interested in the tang design compared to the previous tan colored model. Your video shows at 16:42 that there is less skeletonizing beneath the handle 👍. Unfortunately those two holes at the finger guard are the new weakness of this blade 👎. Still good for food prep and very light batoning. Thanks for that - you make good video. BTW - my same blade measures 0.1115" (2.83mm) thick.
😊thanks, I have a few of these knives with slight variations. Not bad for the money. I don’t beat my knives, but I am glade you did the beating. 😊 Now I have a better look at this knife😊take care.
Thanks, man excellent review. I just got the camillus ergon for 10 dollars at ross they say its worth 18. I will use this review as my baseling for it instead of trusting that it is any better.
I like seeing these kinds of tests, really showing off the maximum limitations of a given knife. I'm often curious about how much abuse a knife can handle, beyond this steel that steel or rc hardness yata yata it's all tomata to me.
@@redneckoperations well yes, they shouldn't. The steel was probably too hard. Doesn't change the fact you shouldn't try and send it into a rock though, that was the point I was trying to get across.
It doesn't even stand up to hammering it into a log, and throwing the log at the tree like a Neanderthal 12x. How am I supposed to open popsicle wrappers and amazon boxes with this piece of junk?
I have this knife an it’s earlier model from Wally World. It’s all black. The black stays in my bag an has a backup for it. The one in the video I use as mainly a kitchen knife. For the price they was a great deal.
Youd have to be crazy to survive on one knife, this is perfect as a belt companion knife, its thin and hollowground so think food prep, skinning, lighy wood work, if you clearing brush get a machete, splitting kindling get a campaxe or heavy chopper, i dont undertand knife bros wanting to do everything with one tool. Regardless This knife is an amazing value, id buy it over a $10 mora, the saber/hollow grind is just more versatile than a short scandi. On a hike i normally carry a folding saw and fallkniven f1, this knife at 1/10 of the price does all the same tasks, the edge retention isnt great but neither is the vg10 on the fallkniven. Its worthy of a leather sheath thats for sure or kydex
I love the Camillus titanium knife it hasn't disappeared yet can't wait to skin a deer this year I keep it sharp and on my belt 24/7 better safe than sorry

The usmc k-bar through. Such a good knife . But will snap at the handle in time . I have had mine for 10 years and will still chop and stab through pork rib .
Sorry to say but these are not normal uses for a knife. I can see batoning to split some wood but beating it that bad. I tried this knife and it works fine under normal use. The spine is good enough to shave wood and scrape a ferro rod and sharp enough to prepare food. The only thing that could use some improvement would be the crappy sheath.

Great video! I've had two of these for a while now. I was curios what it looked like under the handle. Why did they put those holes there? I like this knife good enough for knife tasks that don't include much battoning. I wouldn't choose it for actual survival though.
To overmold a handle you need something for the rubber to hold onto without sliding off and getting the company sued. The Maxpedition fixed blade knives do it the best, with just "key like" edges underneath instead of holes, but that is what they were trying to do.
