Yes, that is correct-- 1.9 litres, which is 2 quarts. What I did was when adding the new oil put 1.5 quarts, start the bike up and keep an eye on the level while continuing to add oil. This way you don't overfill.
the oil level check in the little window is when the bike is on level ground and on center stand or held horizontally and turned off not running, if you fill the oil to between the lines while it is running it will be over filled.
I just got an old 2006 with just over 8k mile son it. It doesnt even turn on. I am going to clean the carb, new battery etc etc but I am new at this. How often would you change the engine oil??
Thank you so much for making this video i have a 1986 ninja 250 and for the life of me i could not find the oil bolt i knew where it was but still unsure! Helped alot!!
You are missing the metal washer which sits on top of the spring and presses against the O ring on the bottom dude......but nice video appreciate it..........
i know this video is over 6 years old, but i just bought an 86 zx6r. i assume most of this will translate to my bike, in the way where everything is. i wanna thnak you for posting this
I use a funnel, pour it into empty windshield washer fluid containers, and bring it to my town transfer station. Can't dump it in the backyard like my grandfather used to :P
Nice vid - I took out the oil filter then replaced it and wondered why the oil level was still high ....lol and realised oh there's another thing to undo and drain lmao yeah sweet now : )
Serious question... There is a o-ring on the bolt that holds the filter in do you need a special tool to replace this o ring on the bolt that holds the filter in
Hey, thanks for this video! I'll be changing my oil, filter, and that gasket this week! What kind of ratchet is that? I don't have one with that kind of setting adjustment that you did, any kind of direction would be awesome!
Fork Sorry, I did not originally see the last part of your post. The tool I used is called a torque wrench. You can set it for specific foot pounds of torque in accordance with your shop manual.
Late response but that's a torque wrench. Probably not necessary for a simple oil change but if your going to be taking parts on and off the block, for example, you are going to need to know the torque specs (how tight the bolts should be) and your going to need a torque wrench (this one is mechanical so it clicks when it hits that pressure, there are also digital ones that a pricier).
Thanks for the vid. I really appreciate it. Do you still have this bike? I just got 2007 Ninja 250 myself about a month ago. Would love to exchange thoughts about them.
i think after you fire up and rev to 1100 rpm the oil rushes in and fills the oil filter cavity, does it not? You then when the bike is still level want to turn engine off. Then check level. At least that is what they do with car's??
For sure. When I was in school I always was working on oil leaking Hondas. I never thought about wearing latex gloves until recently but they really do make the job less "dirty". And you don't get greasemonkey fingernails lol.
the oil level check in the little window is when the bike is on level ground and on center stand or held horizontally and turned off not running, if you fill the oil to between the lines while it is running it will be over filled.
Robinson TeranP Good luck! I am envious of you because I'm guessing you live in a warmer climate than I do. Too cold to ride where I am ATM. Happy riding :]
I changed my oil on mine but I think what happened it I didn't make sure the cover was fully on while it had the O-ring on it didn't take that long for the oil to run out :(
Hahaha I did my friend, everything is very good with my bike I live in Utah so it's very cold now but I will put my bike siting until the weather will be warm..... However I am riding in this weather with lots of clothes my friend hahaha thank you for your help
It sounds like the last person who changed the oil over-torqued the cap bolt b/c it should not be that tight. Make sure you have the correct size socket. Also make sure the head of the bolt is not stripped. Use a breaker bar for mechanical advantage. Make sure you are going counter-clockwise (this may be obvious but i'm unsure of your skill level). Last resort you could grab a flathead and "chisel" at the ridges on the assembly -- counter-clockwise of course :D Good luck.
Between this video, and my repair manual, it looks like changing out the oil should be a cinch... Just need to acquire all the bits and pieces. :P ('07 EX250)
need the washer on the spring guy for filter work right, If you the spring will go up in the filter and then the fun starts, Owner zx11 and kaw is one best oils out there..... eyes open "~"
only thing that was wrong, but not important is that you check the oil level after the bike has sat for a few minutes so the oil can drain down from the engine. THat's why the oil was low at the end of the video
Quick question...do I HAVE to have a stand to do the oil change? I know it makes it easier but I was curious if it is a lot harder without one? Thanks in advance! Good video!
The bike was only 4 years old when this was filmed, with extremely low miles. The O ring was fine, otherwise it would have leaked upon starting. Not sure what you mean about capacity. I had 2 quarts shown in the vid, which is what the dealership and the owners manual calls for.
After I start my bike a little bit gets in the filter and spread around inside...and makes the level lower; so I have to add a little bit. Also I had another washer inside either on the bottom of the filter or on top of that metal top half shell.... and that's why I was here to see where that one went... but you didn't even have it? Oh well, on to the next.
do not buy the K&N filter kit. the two seals that it comes with that supposedly fits onto housing that requires 14 ft lb torque is too small and too big. it will cause oil leak. buy the kawasaki seal and be done with it.
He threw away the fine metal washer between the spring and the oil filter rubber gasket . There is a fine metal washer that goes between the filer and the spring. You are looking for a disaster to occur with your engine!
Thanks for the vid, but this doesn't apply to all those years. If *only* it was this easy. Some bikes require removal of fairings, oil coolers, etc. Not every bike has the filter so accessible.
moccina I ended up just changing the oil this time. I'm one of the 'unfortunate ones' lol... I'm gonna have to remove the fairings and oil cooler. However, my filter is horizontal, w the 'bottom' facing forward, so almost all of the oil was able to drain out. I refilled with Valvoline Synthetic 20-50, engine quieted down considerably. I just purchased a couple weeks ago, I don't think the previous owner had changed the oil in a while. :/
***** Nice. It's a shame when such a simple and practical design gets changed for the worse. At least you were able to get some fresh fluids in there after all.
Thank you for this video. I just got my self a 2003 ninja 250 and I'm going to do the oil change now cause of your video.
Eduardo Iniestra me too!
I just an 03 too..
Me 3. Made it look super easy

A 17in. You mean 17mm Socket bro. Great video it helped A lot you know more than me just a friendly ball busting moment lol
thank you for getting straight to the point and showing the main parts of doing this and not going on for 15 mins
Nice how to video but 1 thing missing, the metal washer that sits on top of the spring likes to stick to the bottom of the filter when you remove it.
Truth. I have the washer and I have the same motorcycle.
Crucial.
Dude I got scared when I threw the old one in the bag and that thing fell off I did put it back on correctly tho
This a great video. I've got a 2007 250 Ninja as well and I'm going to change the oil for the first time myself. Thanks for all the tips.
Chip Gibbons Glad I could help. Happy riding my man!
Great video. I just bought me a 2003 Ninja 250. Now I'm going to change the oil. Right on with the NEW oil on rubber rings.
Nice, no nonsense walkthrough. Very helpful! Thanks!
VERY much appreciated! Tight on money right now and you've given me the confidence to do this on my own. Thanks for taking the time to help us.
after 12 years this has helped me with my first bike lol
great concise, helpful, and clear instructions. Thank you sir!
Glad to help. Happy riding!
I have a 87' zx750 Ninja that looks identical to yours..parts/bolts/everything.
This Oil change 101 will help me alot! THANX!
just got an 07 kawasaki ninja 250. thanx for the video! helped a loy

Karleigh LeClere Glad this helped. You will love the bike... I miss mine. Have fun!
Cheers mate just got o2 zzr
Happy riding :]
Nice shade of blue. Great vid. Thank you.

This is the most helpful video on Ninja oil change, can you do another one on remove the pregen fairings?
Nice vid - I took out the oil filter then replaced it and wondered why the oil level was still high ....lol and realised oh there's another thing to undo and drain lmao yeah sweet now : )
Serious question... There is a o-ring on the bolt that holds the filter in do you need a special tool to replace this o ring on the bolt that holds the filter in
what is the key that you use with preasure settings i need to buy that one but idk what to look for
Hey, thanks for this video! I'll be changing my oil, filter, and that gasket this week!

Good video bro now I am ready to do my oil change

Hey, quick question, will this be the same on a 95' ex500 ninja?? Awesome video!
Great instructions. Very clear. Thank you!
I will try today for first time... Thanks for the video man
Robinson TeranP Good luck! I am envious of you because I'm guessing you live in a warmer climate than I do. Too cold to ride where I am ATM. Happy riding :]
best tutorial i've seen so far. thanks man
Hi i just got my 07 ninja the other day is there a stand youre using to get a good enough height to do the oil change?
I'm changing the oil on a 99 ninja 250 is the filter for it specific?
I changed my oil on mine but I think what happened it I didn't make sure the cover was fully on while it had the O-ring on it didn't take that long for the oil to run out :(
Ah that stinks. Hopefully you caught it in time before it lost too much oil.
@@moccina I did!
I was talking about the area where you put new oil in. Everything else is fine. but thanks! I'm new to motorcycle mechanics so yeah.
Is the ticking sounds normal?
Yeah this is just how the parellel twin chugs along
Thx, I've heard that as well. But good thing to keep in mind when changing oil. Happy riding !
there should be a washer on the spring, where is it? lost it?
Funny that, on my Kawasaki's the circular round oil tray "cap", goes underneath the oil filter, rather than on top! 1979s 1990s ZL400/600s.

Robinson TeranP Glad you got some fresh oil in your bike. Stay warm & keep the shiny side up!
Thank you.... You too
I am east coast Boston. Yep seen M13, he seems to have gotten hugely popular in the last 6 months. See you around the 'tube, just subbed u
Is that gasket easy to find? I mean, if you have to replace it every time you do an oil change, it should be available everywhere huh?
Hey I just changed oil in96 zx11 but my oil glass is messed up I put in 3.5 l
Where do you get gaskets and o-rings and washers etc.?
you dont need a centerstand, but yes I would imagine it will be a bit tricky without one
How many liters did the bike end up taking? I was told that 1.9 liter is correct but want sure.
It sounds like the last person who changed the oil over-torqued the cap bolt b/c it should not be that tight. Make sure you have the correct size socket. Would love that dude. Have you seen M13? Also, just wondering what city are you in
?
what brand of torque wrench is that? I looking to buy one soon
This helps a lot thanks man
If you use an adapter on a torque wrench you may hit the torque click prematurely. Its best if you use a torque wrench to not use an adapter.
Sorry, just saw this now lol. The bike was an '07. I sold her this summer and plan to get another one possibly in the coming spring.
Thanks, what year 250 is that?
Between this video, and my repair manual, it looks like changing out the oil should be a cinch... Just need to acquire all the bits and pieces. :P

Thanks so much really helped me in my time of need. God Bless
I appreciate that. I might start doing riding vids, feel free to sub. Happy riding :D
Thanks helped me out a bunch

Noticed this.

I have a problem.. on my ninja the cap seems to be stuck so I can't twist it off and can't put new oil in. Help please
What size torque wrench is that it it 1/2 or 3/8 or 1/4
Gerardo Ramirez jr 1/2" on the torque wrench. Thanks for viewing!
Quick question...do I HAVE to have a stand to do the oil change? I know it makes it easier but I was curious if it is a lot harder without one? Thanks in advance! Good video!
Right on. Thanks for watching!
Its low when running because its circulating through the motor.. Its supposed to be that way... So dont go adding oil for anyone that was wondering.
Do you need to change filter everytime?
It's recommended. But if you can only afford oil. You can double
tie a shop rag around the cap and then grab it with the pliers. That way you won't bugger up the cap either. Good luck
Haha ! Right on. Have fun. Looking forward to the vid.
Not sure.. It might as well be a no-name, but I still paid about $40 for it I think. It's a must have tool.
no mention about the small O'ring , and you didn"t swap any of the seals out , the capacity is 1.9 lts with oil filter change , good luck with that.
The bike was only 4 years old when this was filmed, with extremely low miles. The O ring was fine, otherwise it would have leaked upon starting. Not sure what you mean about capacity. I had 2 quarts shown in the vid, which is what the dealership and the owners manual calls for.

Rite on! Glad I could help. Ride safe :D
VERY WELL EXPLAIN VIDEO, THANKS FOR POSTING !!
thanks! I just didn't wanna break it
Great vid!
Don't forget about the oil screen. A lot of crap ends up there. 5 8mm bolts behind the oil filter.
Glad I could help. ~cheers
Thx for the comment. Ride safe!
oh nice, Boston is fucking amazing. I was just there a few weeks ago. I subbed back haha :-)
Silly question but how/where do you discard the old oil?
Use it as bonfire fuel
Weird, so different than my '99 EX500..lol Interesting to know though!
do not buy the K&N filter kit. the two seals that it comes with that supposedly fits onto housing that requires 14 ft lb torque is too small and too big.
it will cause oil leak. buy the kawasaki seal and be done with it.
Gracias desde Ecuador
Happy riding :]
Thank you ^^ My English is poor >< ,BUT I LIKE IT KAWASAKI ^^
Dealership or Kawasaki online parts vendor.
You forgot to put the ring on filter, the ring was on old filter you dont sow becouse he was stuck on old filter, sorry for bad english
thanks man!
What eight of oil
Whats the filter number?
16111-003
He threw away the fine metal washer between the spring and the oil filter rubber gasket . There is a fine metal washer that goes between the filer and the spring. You are looking for a disaster to occur with your engine!
Yep he dont sow becouse ring olways stuck, and lot of people doing this mistake
Honestly it doesn't totally need the washer, although it's better if you have it.
Да и чаша должна быть под фильтром
Thanks a lot!
Oh lol. In that case try some needle nose pliers.
thanks dude
Thank you
You bet. Happy riding :]
Thanks for the vid, but this doesn't apply to all those years. If *only* it was this easy. Some bikes require removal of fairings, oil coolers, etc. Not every bike has the filter so accessible.
Yeah I should have put 250 in the title, as the design for that particular bike was the same from 88 to '07 I beleive.
moccina I ended up just changing the oil this time. I'm one of the 'unfortunate ones' lol... I'm gonna have to remove the fairings and oil cooler.
