      yeah reminds me of windows 11 atm. You have the kernel, like dos. Then you have the sub system like windows 95, where they later have build on top. Windows 10 and 11 was the breaking point for me, where they where trying to hide system settings. Windows 95 had control panel, so they are trying to hide that. Calling it settings. so you should be able to run settings instead of control panel. Issue is, the further you click into settings, you end up in control panel :P Then they are trying to remove parts from control panel. So now you dont know if its control panel or settings. Then you sit looking for it, you press like 20 buttons where it takes you from this to that, and you end up into control panel again xD So layers on layers are not a good thing. Confusing and enoying.

    This feels like a huge improvement! In previous years I've always bounced off of KDE because of how messy it felt (multiple menus inside menus, walls of text, the unorganised settings app), also the KDE style felt less polished than Libadwaita. This update might actually get me to use KDE more.

    • @yarecco

      I don't think so. Nothing much changes in that matter. Still the same ugly as it used to be and complicated to use. Still difficult to find the settings in the control center. And they still keep changing them so when you finally find it it may be replaced in the next editoin sommewhere else where you won't find it.

    Beautiful! Plasma has always been very customisable, but had a generally rough feeling with janky animations, little or no padding for many elements, rare but unexpected plasma shell reboots in Wayland, minor but constant graphical bugs, etc. It seems these issues are gone with Plasma 6. I hope they will add a setting to choose the window roundness and title-bar size, though. I'm also concerned about third-party extensions such as Event Calendar. Thanks for the video!

    Good to see. I probably won't be running it anytime soon. I'm currently on Kubuntu 22.04LTS, and will upgrade to 24.04LTS when it comes out, but that will almost certainly still use Plasma 5, and possibly X11. Though I may have a play with it on a spare laptop earlier. When Plasma 6 is available on 24.04LTS I'll definitely have a look in.

    What's happening with Activities in Plasma 6? Activities is so underrated in Plasma 5. It's like having meta desktops that can have their own desktops. Totally a gamechanger for people who do different kinds of work on one PC. (One set of desktops for work, another for games, etc.) But even the Plasma manual doesn't describe this awesome functionality!

    • @df3yt
      @df3yt 3 месяца назад +1

      Agreed, I use activities alot and most people don't understand it's power. Sadly KDE 6 has regressed so much it means I try find a 5.27 distro or start looking at other DE's - this after being on KDE for 15 years. The devs have taken a real Apple / MS approach with KDE 6 of breaking stuff that works - denying issues exist then just saying this is the way it is, tough.

    KDE Plasma is impressive and highly customizable. But it's downside is that it will need at least 12GB of RAM and at least 3GHz processor speed. While so many LINUX flavors created a name for salvaging old hardware that would have been unusable using MS-Windows, KDE Plasma will enable more LINUX flavors capture the newer and faster processors away from Microsoft. I find it a bit amusing. I have both systems on my computer. But watching linux turn to windows 11, is a bit fun. Watching linux for a while now, we have like this little brother trying to keep up with big brother windows. Im running Nobara KDE Plasma for 2 weeks now on a Intel/nvidia system. Its been breaking left and right. I spent like 2 weeks to get the system up and running without getting all the error messages. Finaly when i got all those issues out of the way, now the Discover process is acting up. before that the update was breaking. Sending things into loops. to codec errors, to services error.. the list is long. Before even getting the system, the memory stick corrupted, due it was made in windows. So i was first offered to use Etcher on the site it self. But if that touced windows even a second i could not install the Nobara. Same with Fedora writer. Then someone said on the forum.. use rufus. So booted rufus, and that worked. past 2 weeks, im pretty sure ive been trougbleshooting for over 50 hours, and more then 15 reinstalls, just to get the system working. So its not been the most pleasent experiance. The fun part, was that it was perfectly fine when its installed. The second i started updating, it made it selfs a few issues, where i get red text of failed this and that on boot screen. then it asks me to update again. now the system is realy unstable. Then i get the third update.. now i cant boot.. Now i need to go to rescue desktop :P Key to the problem was to be aware of what was breaking.. Find out what was breaking, and handle it before the updates after reinstalling again. I have a system now, that has no issues on boot. you think finaly.. get update 204.. Now a new problem is presented to me. Telling me kd5d is crashing or something. Then i have to send a dev crash report. Seems like they are working on things, due the updates are pretty agressive atm. But im also pretty much sure it wont happen if i had a normal AMD system at this point.

    Too much focus on useless functionality from my point of view. What about removing the hundreds of KDE packages from the regular packages list? What about putting something useful into the context menu / right mouse button on the taskbar (who is re-configuring the KDE environment each day? wouldn't a context menu for opening task manager, closing all windows, etc. be more useful there?). What about the icons switching positions on the task bar when opening applications (really bad!). What about Alt-Tab showing only Icons for applications (full window screenshots don't work for more than 3 apps running and are much harder to distinguish compared to only application Icons being presented). What about indents for the settings categories? What about sorting "installed" by category? Why is the packages list still incomplete? What about separate transparency settings (none wanted) on the KDE system menu? What about colored title bars to easily detect active window? What about settings for font size, paddings and margins to reduce the toy look of all the windows and settings? Linux desktop is getting better, but for people with a lot of applications and fast context switches, KDE is still not there. It looks ok, but productivity if you use a lot of windows / applications is higher with XFCE e.g. I think.

    • @k4everut
      @k4everut 7 месяцев назад +2

      This statement is very untrue. I use both GNOME and KDE Plasma. They look nothing like each other, by default. Did the KDE Plasma team copy the Overview from GNOME? Yes. However, that's pretty much where the similarities end. GNOME is a beautiful looking, minimalist desktop that needs a ton of buggy, unsupported extensions to be functional. KDE Plasma is always functional by default. Windows 11 copies directly from KDE Plasma, not the other way around. Plasma looks nothing like MacOS, iOS, or Android. However, Plasma is flexible enough to mimic those OSes with very little and easy to do customizations. Plasma also has the ability to "absorb" GTK applications and make them look native on the desktop, a feat that GNOME can't seem to do with QT apps without editing some text files.

    • @draftofspasiba2

      That's exactly why people can't move away from Gnome, due to their accustomed "workflow". Plasma 6 is trying to fix that by welcoming everyone to their own respective workflow, one could simply edit the desktop the way they want, after all that's what plasma is made for, "customization".

    KDE The best looks really modern and really charming. I work with MATE because Intel's processor is difficult for it to handle such an advanced desktop(KDE) so MATE DESKTOP is best suited for Intel's processors . I'll try the Plasma 6 if it's heavy on Intel to run it I'll go back to MATE which isn't modern but works best..Intel's CPUs weak relative to AMD

This is what’s wrong with Linux desktops. They just can’t seem to make something that doesn’t look open source.

      That's the point Kde looks bland out of the box, but it's meant to be more customized. Kde is the most, if not the most, customizable desktop environment. You're probably more of a person who prefers your desktop to be customized out-of the box, so gnome might be better for you. Also, Kde has alot of better apps.
