    243 is a great caliber; most here in Australia either have one, have a Mate who has one, or have used one. Plenty of factory ammo options and plenty of firearm manufacturers making them. I load the 87 grain V-Max, and both my HOWA’s love them. Very moderate recoil with heaps of knockdown power and a straight shooter. That Weatherby is a nice piece of kit indeed. Cheers from Down Under.

    Great video and some great groups with the 243 Win, mine is the Remington model 770. The 243 win is so easy to hand load for, thus far mine has shown a preference for the 100 Gr BTSP’s, also the 80 Gr BTSP. Like you the size of penny, but five shots. Looks like the 87 Gr V-Max made it’s way on to my shopping list.

    Your Weatherby is a awesome gun! I've been watching all your 243 stuff as I just recently purchased a new hunting rifle (mainly deer) in 243. I've always been a 270 guy but my Browning A bolt medallion "disappeared". I absolutely loved that gun. Anyhow, im a leftie and just running out and purchasing a left handed gun doesn't happen and ordering one obviously was out of the question. I found a gun shop an hour away that had one left handed Ruger American 243 so I jumped on board. I'm loving it's accuracy and am hoping it treats me well in the deer woods. It's been tough finding ammo, I checked out Norma after watching your video on their 243 but their out of stock. I've got some 100 grain Federal and 95 grain Winchester and they both are performing well. Hopefully a guy can get reloading supplies someday soon so I can start experimenting with different rounds. Awesome video sir💯

    The "V" in V-Max stands for varmint. Not recommended for deer. Staying with Hornady brand, go with the 80 gr GMX. Would also be better for Texas heart shots on coyotes. I have developed a few loads for my El-Cheapo Savage in .243. It absolutely loves the 40Gr Sierra Varmitter H.P. Bullets! With a good scope on that rifle you can honestly shoot horseflies at 100 yds. She'll shoot 1 holers all day if you do your part. I did replace the scope with one that is better suited for woods hunting, a budget friendly Mueller 2-7. She still shoots 5 shot groups under An inch. And for deer loads she really likes the 100Gr Hornady bullets. Just took her out again last week-end because it's been a few years since I shot her. After 3 fouling shots, she still puts them where you want them. For a $300.00 rifle the Savage is hard to beat.

    My old Savage rifle is a cheapo rifle and it shot very well. (Accu-Trigger) I sold it to move up to 30-06 because I thought the bigger round was superior for hunting game. Then I had my right shoulder replaced and the doctor, himself an avid shooter, told me that the 30-06 was gonna have more recoil than my shiny new Titanium shoulder could handle. Paired with MS, I sold my guns thinking that I’d never get to shoot them again. Since 2019, I’ve nearly hurt myself trying to kick my own butt for selling my firearms. Stupid is as stupid does!

    Whoteewho, I wouldn't use the Vmax for deer, as others have said. Hornady has a load with a 90 grain ELD-X bullet. With a muzzle velocity of 3150 and a ballistic coefficient of .409. Sighted 3" high at 100 yards, it's max height above line of sight is 3.75" at 150 yards, and is 2.96" low at 325 yards, and still has 1172 foot pounds of energy. That would make a GREAT deer round.

    • @clintleffingwell8129
      @clintleffingwell8129 2 года назад

      I just picked up a box of Hornady 90gr ELD-X from Scheel's to work up a load using IMR 4350 in an old Browning Safari Grade with the pencil barrel. I've previously worked up a load using Hornady 100gr Inter-Locks for my Remington 798 using 40.0 gr. IMR 4350 and it is a consistent 3/4 MOA shooter. I think the 100gr is just a tad heavy for the Browning's pencil barrel, hence I'm going to give the 90 gr. ELD-X a try.

      I find just shoulder bumping cases really dosent make that much difference in accuracy unless you have already found what OAL is giving you the best accuracy from setting the bullet jump. Once that's dialed in definitely make matched cases and then start ladder scaling the powder charge to really shrink up the groups!

    ... hope people realize that especially with the over bore calibres that as they shoot the gun they are changing the gun ... if you're finicky about 1/4 MOA or less accuracy the barrel might be shot out by the time you achieve that optimum load

    Who tee, both rifles had the first round of the 4 round groups, cold barrel shots, be just a little off the group. That 3 shoot group was outstanding from the weatherby !! Any Idea what causes cold barrel shots to be just a little out of whack ?? Perhaps a little tightening of the barreled action into the stock ??? I often see two rounds all most touching and a third round off by about 3/4 inch at 100 yds ?? I can tighten that “ Flier “ by bedding the action and confirming that the barrel is truely free floated ? A well bedded action should sit comfortably into the stock with zero rocking ( side to side or front to back ) even with loose action screws ??

    Love that bullet for reloads. I use Reloader 17 for powder but the bullet is a great varmint bullet. Might work for,deer but I would ask for a bullet designed for deer.

    Compare those handloads loads to off the shelf off the shelf V Max..Is it worth to hand load or can you just go to the gun shop a get some Hornady.

  • @jasoncarpenter4116
    @jasoncarpenter4116 3 года назад

    The V-Max is a varmint bullet and is not made for the thicker skin of a deer.
    There's tons of good choices, you should get your buddy to load you some Hornady ELD-X boolits! Lol I had to use one of your words.

    Awesome video! Never shot 243, I’m more of a 30 caliber guy, 308, 300 weatherby mag, 30-06. Beautiful rifle though. What scope is that?
