2 UC Berkeley students make history as 1st nonspeaking autistic graduates

- Someone once said, "Nothing is impossible as long as you believe in it." That best describes two nonspeaking autistic students from U.C. Berkeley who graduated with honors this week. It is a milestone for them and for Cal. abc7ne.ws/3ls387X

It definitely is inspiring. My son is a non verbal autistic and his teachers always tell me to be realistic but I will encourage and make the way for my son whoever he decides to go. I will fight for him till the day I die
I can't believe teachers, the supposed foundations of a child's knowledge and capability, are actively discouraging your son from achieving what he wants to! It's honestly criminal, I'm so sorry you and your son have to go through that. Just know there are others cheering for him and his ambitions!!

Don’t trust teachers, trust your son potential and inspire him. I was told i would never become a dentist cause i didn’t have the grades etc. Well guess what i am a dentist now. Just be a parent and encourage your child and draw out any negative BS.
Oh yea I wouldn't listen to the teachers, the ability to speak doesn't immediately mean that they are less functioning than autistic people that are verbal and I think people forget that a lot.
I have given up explaining to teachers that my son has strong receptive language. But I will never give up on my son and his abilities!! 💪
Imagine how hard it is to get a 3.8 or 4.0 GPA without a disability & they did it with non-speaking autism, that's so admirable! They're both brilliant

@@MsTinkerbelle87 fair enough. but the term special needs is rooted in ableism. Calling someone special needs is an easy way to segregate disabled ppl from the rest of society. Hence special ed. If non disabled people keep saying our needs are “special” that often serves as excuse not to provide us basic human needs like inclusion and access. I highly recommend reading Judy Heuman’s work on disability rights. Lmk your thoughts

Mom/care givers should give a talk on how they did it. My son is non-verbal 16yr old. I wish you shared your success story. 🙏🏻So happy for these kids 🤩
It depends on the type of non-verbal autism. They have apraxia which doesn’t affect intelligence in their case.

I’m so proud of them! If you give people with disabilities the accommodations they need, they will thrive!
Congratulations to David and Hari!! They are very inspirational and it reminds me of some friends I had who had similar conditions. And we made a play about what it was like to be a nonspeaking autistic student in a public school. There is so much change that is needed and I hope in the future there will be more accommodations in US education. So that in the future more people like David and Hari are able to achieve their dreams! You both are heroes!

I have a friend who's sister is blind and she graduated from Law School and now works in a Guelph University. And her husband is also blind and he is a Music Therapist and works with Alzheimer patients. He plays the piano and they are also great singers and have performed in concerts. They have 2 little girls who can both see, one is 4 or 5 and the other 2 or 3yrs old. We want to live in a society where we want to normalize society. Hope this inspires others to go and reach the limit they are able to achieve. 💖💖💖♥♥♥⭐⭐⭐

I am autistic, though I can speak - and being a girl I can hide it to a certain extent by "masking". I just finished my first year at an ivy league law school. I had issues, but I didn't tell anyone (or the school) about my autism because I'm always worried people - especially future employers - won't give me a chance to do what I know I can do. These guys clearly didn't have the option to hide it, but I think it's absolutely awesome that they have accomplished what they did.
Now this is the type of news I can watch all day long 😊

I have a family member who is on the spectrum and I'm trying to encourage them to also look at other colleges. They are only thinking of only one and said they could never see themselves at Cal due to their personal confidence, but this video is inspiring and I wanna show it to them.

Yes, with a little accommodation i.e. an hour or two extra, which all disabled people can apply for.

How much does their assistant/aide do for them and how much does the assistant/aide cost? How do they carry their course loads by typing one letter at a time? How do they talk to their professors or in class? Does the aide stay with them? Can the parents share more so that other parents may similarly help their spectrum kids?

Is non verbal autism at 3 something to be really concerned about ? I'm curious my daughter has it and she's young so I'm thinking the speech can possibly come one day, I try bow to worry but I can't help it
It's always good for the kids to be diagnosed early so they can get the proper resources as soon as possible 💫

By not placing the spoken word as the top of the hierarchy of communication we can open the world to all people. AAC, sign language, etc all help people open the world and abled people creating access to material to be handled in ways beyond the spoken word
