They do need to look into their autograph team, my first submission had a Weird Al of all subjects that they sent back unslabbed without any information about why. It was signed in person after a show (see my pic ha). Also have several others in que that I sent to Nolan Ryan’s foundation, and Rose in person for them to grade….can’t wait to see what happens
I agree older slabs got graded easier. Some of those 10s look like a 8 in today’s day. PSA is still trustworthy I’d like to think. And some sets of the cards are damaged out the box (esp thick card sets) so they do take that into account which is good.
The new PSA slabs are easier to crack believe it or not. It’s what we like to call gum plastic ( medical grade ) and it has more flex which means less brittle breaks when removing a card. There’s a simple process to remove the card without the previous risk of damage from the acrylic shatter.
Nat should send in 20 perfect cards of his own, and SEE for himself what happens to them and what grades he gets. I bet it would be worse than he’d expect. ⚠️⚠️
Do people still use whatnot also never heard of youtube live ? I was banned from selling on Ebay like 15 yrs ago from someone scamming me ( true story). I contacted ebay about bit nothing...not sure where to sell cards and memorbilia. I have highend and low end stuff.
I wonder about the centering issue. How do you automate centering on new cards that have no obvious borders? It would be cool if the info was made public so that the sellers and buyers both can judge it in accordance with standards. How many cards do you have to grade before you even understand what the centering is based on? Do they get this info from the mfr? it still seems like they are guessing on cards they haven't seen much of.
Yes. It’s supposed to be rare, but I believe their disclaimer on re-holdering mentions there isn’t a guarantee of the original grade being given again.
@SportCardMadness Selfishly, I was hoping for some of the questions I proposed to get worked into the interview, but Nat did reference the counterfeit detection. Thought the N4 discussion was really interesting, as Nat implied the autograph-only service might also be reviewing the authentication of the cards.👍
he was trying to avoid having to say that he doesn't really have any interest in combining SGC and PSA pop reports, in my mind, and I couldn't agree more. SGC and PSA grade in different ways and have for many years. What sense would it make to group in PSA 9's with SGC 9's? People can combine numbers from both pop reports on their own. It would be foolish to combine them, and I think Nat knows that
Curious what was said at the 5-ish minute mark right after LZ asked about the grading standard changes over the years? I would agree with the sentiment that it has gotten harder. I've even gone as far as cracking high grade vintage (randome commons - I'm not rich) from older slabs and re-subbing them opposed to re-holdering them to see if the results was different. It was a small sample and it was almost 50/50, so basically inconclusive. Nothing got a higher score. Grades either matched or went down. Anecdotally, the ones that dropped were less centered than the ones that regraded the same. Eye appeal plays a big factor I bet.
Nat said in other interviews that PSA has not changed the standards, however, they are just getting more strict in enforcing them. I think he got in some hot water over that so now he’s being more careful with his words.
Grading a card is completely different than grading an Album/Record. Protecting a card in a slab will prevent damage. But, you can still see it. A record in a slab cannot go on your turntable ever again!
Nice to hear Nat Turner giving Jose Canseco a shout out, I've got 10/10-auto of his 83 Fritsh and 86 Donruss; but when I crack out PSA/SGC 9's of his 86 Traded Tiffany cards they usually come back a 7/10 due to mechanical indents that they used to not make an issue. Also poor luck with regrades on 9's of the 85 McGwire Tiffany edition, 2 failed attempts (got 6 and 7.)
There's no doubt in my mind, including all the big shops, Dave &Adams, Midwest, Steel City etc All these scammers are sweating rn, names will eventually be leaked
great interview...thanks for booking this one... you asked Nat on slabbing LP's along with CD's and Cassettes... I am all for PSA to keep expanding to all areas collectibles... if they do quality job... in that PSA has to best pop report to figure out what is going on and all the other slabbers lag far behind on this front... add their set registry program drives competition so one can become George Washington on Mt Rushmore lists... the LP slab will be too heavy? not buying this, other mom and pop's (just starting out) are starting to slab LP's.. HA is featuring slabbed LP's on their Oct auction... Fanatics and Michael Rubin is agressively expanding their circle... so, PSA/Nat needs to follow suit... as noted, they will slab comics and mags in H1 2025. (good).
A key strategic aspect of PSA has been: best pop report and set registries... cgc comic and mag pop report is the terrible, as has been case of cgc now buying jsa to add more autos... bgs pop report is just ok.. but again, no company has the pop report that psa has.. and with such a large database now, it creates a large moat... my view is psa with this advantage, keep expanding (as they did with comics/mags) and go into music.. LP, cd's, cassettes... Fanatics sees this signal.. what with Michael Rubin's July 4th White party each year that merges music and athlete a listers.............the mom and pop LP slabbers are good start... but my view is PSA has to anticipate new frontiers and lead... no need to be 1st, Apple for example did not make 1st smartphone... but use the Apple model... see a good market, assess if natural area of expansion, make decision to enter, and dominate once decision is made. Thus, why I feel psa should go into LP/CD/cassettes slabbing. HA showcases sealed slabbed 1960's LP's, 1st or early printing... but for any collectible to take off is need for pop report to quantify how rare items are. Thus, low pop, high grade iconic LP's, and even more rare, sealed from original pressing, and hype stickers.
The fact that "only a small percentage" has PSA and SGC according to surveys is BECAUSE the registry only allows PSA and has for so long. Way more people would collect both/add both if the option was available. That explanation makes little sense.
Ive been collecting for 45 years.... old slabs were graded much easier~ the proof is right in front of all of us with every slab ~ Nat Turner is being completely disingenuous here... total BS... The standards have changed without question.
I really enjoy these interviews. The PSA registry is frustrating because they haven't accepted new requests all year. Something was supposed to change as of today August 30th, but I don't see anything on their website. I have a set that's in their pop report but not in the registry that I want to add. As far as grading standards I was watching this video on T205 cards graded a PSA 4 and most of them look like they would grade a 2 or less nowadays. It seems especially with vintage something has changed. ruclips.net/video/sUDqRfxJq_E/видео.html
⚠️⚠️Many cards are getting damaged while in the graders’ hands. It’s a shame they are focused on speed of cranking out slabs but injuring so many cards in the process. PSAs next move? They already do pop control and grade 9s a 4 so people have to resubmit to them. Why change anything with that profitable business model?
I still do not understand the hype of PSA over other grading services. Especially considering the cost of PSA is nuts and time to grade is ridiculous. Coin industry suffers from same issue, even though other companies are trying to compete by grading harder and harder. I think AI is only answer as People are subjective and not perfect so one 10 does not always equal other 10s from one, company or different. I think grading is ruining sports card collecting as a whole. Authenticating is great but a number grade is not needed. I think that and Fanatics monopoly will kill this new wave of card collecting.

A stand alone SGC set registry is much needed.
If multiple graders check a card, then you wouldn't have 6s that regrade a 10
