I go over my process of creating Lightning Bolt Dice as well as Health and Mana Potions for my patrons as a reward for the highest tier patrons. I do not succeed in either attempt.
It was a rough 2 weeks, and I just couldn't get the final products out in a way that I wanted to. However, the only time you truly lose, is when you let failures keep you down. So, I wanted to turn this into a learning opportunity, as that is truly what my channel is all about. (And you can bet that I'll be taking these projects down in a round 2!)

For clarification on the lightning bolt dice, there was uncured silicone around the numbers, so the resin didn't fill up the mold properly, and you can't actually get any numbers on the dice. They are also super hard to sand due to the shape without causing some issues.
We'll knock it out in Round 2 I'm sure! 😁
Also for those asking, the creator of the file asked that I not share it, so I am going to respect their wishes. :) If they change their mind or decide to sell it, I'll link it up for you all.

Just to see what you're working with, you could use a glossy, clear spraypaint to coat the lightning bolts.

Have you considered getting a small tumbler for your 3d printed things like those lightning dice? Could be something to look into for smoothing down the roughness of complex shapes.

      @soaringwyvern9251 4 года назад +1

the matte effect could be caused by the texture of the 3d print. you may be able to *polish* them a bit with acetone or something to smooth out the texture.

I never really understood why there are so many channels out there that are afraid to show when they fail or struggle. Your health potions had the hallmark of resin that boiled due to an uncontrolled exothermic reaction due to pouring too deep (I have seen this many times 🤣 ). The technical data sheet for your brand of resin advises a maximum pour depth of 1/4". If you use a resin that is suited to deeper pours (you can get brands with pour depths up to 2") you should not have that problem. You will also find those resins cure slow enough to self degas without the need for vacuum or pressure.

On a different note, I used to work a lot with Sculpy and I've noticed that red is by far the most staining color. It's just an aesthetic thing, but if you want to avoid the red residue left on your molds, then I suggest trying a different color like white or even one of their translucent colors.

Thank you for posting this video. I did a mana potion project where I took a dwarf sorcerer mini (which I had painted), placed it in a bottle, and poured in resin. The mistake I made was I did not have a pressure chamber or a vacuum chamber, so the end result was a bottle so full of small bubbles that the only part of the dwarf you could see were his feet. I was so disappointed because the paint job on the mini was one of the best I'd ever done. It is encouraging to know that even professionals like you make mistakes and are willing to share those mistakes with us.

Just a little tip for your safety: Nitril gloves are very thin. You should never get anything harmful or toxic onto your gloves, just try to handle chemicals as if you are bare handed. They will protect you in most cases, but only for a second or so - they just give you time to react and immediately pull them off and throw them away. You can get acid and (organic)solvent proof gloves made from thicker more robust materials.
Submerging your hand in that inhibitor made me scream a bit. On that bottle the GHS08 Symbol is a clear indicator, that this stuff is/can be really harmful to your body. And those gloves will likely not protect you from that. Get some special tweezers instead ;)

For the lightning bolt you can use better printing materials, I'm an odonthologist stundent and we have a LOT of materials that do prints ridiculously well, I'm not talking about mm shit, no, I'm talking about nanometric details (Because the teeth are actually pretty hard to print right).
One of my favorite ones are the Polysiloxane precision impression material. They are precise as hell, but they are kinda expensive and not as resusable as yoy may want, they are precision silicones that are great, they last for weeks without changing anything, after a month maybe they are a little bit smaller.
Also, the polysiloxane do get smaller but only that, just a little mm, not a ton. Try to do a research and try them if you like, maybe they are usefull for you.

Well i for one think that failure isn't the opposite of success. That's quitting. So you didn't fail. And honestly i think your matte lightning bolts look like amasing ice bolts. Just dont lick the yellow ice XD so dont be hard on yourself, ok? You did awesome and still made some awesome things even if they weren't as you expected.

on the lightning bolt dice: do you think it'd work if the mold would be square and the orientation would look like a ladder? like, the steps would be the dice and the other part small, well, canals for the resin to go through?

I'm a polymer clay artist and as soon as I saw that red sculpey I got nervous, red is literally THE most staining color 😂 Especially if you're using classic Sculpey which is much softer, vs Premo, Soufflé or Sculpey III which are firmer and hold better detail, or even moreso Sculpey for kids which is almost a damn liquid when it's warm and is also the most staining thing I've ever seen in my life. That looked to me like Sculpey Classic just from the matte softer look, I do NOT recommend using red, use white or grey or beige, they're sold in giant blocks that are much cheaper to get and will save you those stain headaches.
If you do stain something like a hard surface, rubbing alcohol if your friend, and even acetone if what you have it on is not plastic or something that reacts with acetone. RIP to that carpet though, it's nearly impossible to get out of cloth.

Honestly, I love seeing that my favorite creator makes mistakes too, and you were at my totally n00b level at one point too! Its all about learning, and we love learning from you, so this type of video is actually very interesting, at least to me!!! We love you Rybonator!!! Keep doing you, and don't let your brain put too much pressure on you!!!! I just bought my very own pressure pot today, so I am excited to progress and learn from your videos!!!

You could say the little line on the health potion is just a natural separation of layers of the the solvents and ingredients in the potion. Like a vinaigrette. "Shake well before use!" (which works doubly, because shaking these bottled dice is how you use them).

By the way, I had a thought about the Sophie and Toffie molds: Have you thought about drilling a hole into the lid and inserting a pipette tip into it as reservoir? Dark moon dice did this with the alibaba wish molds that too don't have a reservoir. If you use punch pliers you should be able to get a perfect hole. The molds are really pretty so it's a shame you can't use them in the pressure pot

I made health potion rollers for my players following your first video, and they were my first resin craft. I used a little more resin than you did in that video because I wanted the potions to look more full, and I had the same issue you did here with the resin pulling away, but I assumed I had done something wrong! Turns out, no, it's just because I don't have a vacuum chamber. Thanks for sharing your learning opportunities with us.
