    Madonna at the time said, it's a fantasy, the whole video is a fantasy, not necessarily her reality but she felt that's where she was in her life and what she wanted to explore at the time being a 34 year old grown woman and she respects that MTV did not want to show it because it's too adult in nature.
    It was definitely bold and brave, she was the biggest female star on the planet. Her previous album had sold over 30 million copies and then she released this as the first single from the new album. Even today i don't think many mainstream popstars would dare to do it in this way.

    • @Chris-vj8fv

    • @Marc-zi5cq
      @Marc-zi5cq 3 года назад +5

      @@Chris-vj8fv Exactly. Also she was brave enough to launch the album with it and took the risk of the backlash overshadowing the rest of the tracks. She could have easily released a beautiful ballad like Rain as the first single which is universally praised or Dance Bop Deeper and Deeper and launch the album with that and safe Erotica til single #3 or #4 when the album already did big numbers and has scored some hits but she went all in with this song and video as single #1 and the album release immediately afterwards. At the end of the day it's not really ''Sex'' album, there's about 3 songs on the album that deal with Sex in some way or form. The rest deal more with relationships, loneliness, redemption, loss etc.

    Ayanna, I love some remarks you made like “why is the naked body of woman so offensive” and that the imagery is very artistic. First of all, “Erotica”, the album, is for me Madonna’s masterpiece. Until today there’s no other album that explores kinky and sexual phantasies in general in such a provocative but artistic way at the same time with such class. You should listen to it. The song is sexy and I remember the fuss when it was played in the nightclubs when I was a teenager. Now let’s talk about the concept: Madonna wanted to portray a woman who owns her sexuality. The album was released with the Sex book, that was a big success in the editorial market, but also caused a big backlash towards Madonna. Most of the sex book imagery is in this video. And that’s the point you very correctly observed. Like Justify My Love, that is a prelude to Erotica, there’s more teasing than anything else. It’s not gross, it’s erotic art. But she crossed some boundaries, like that last shot of her naked trying to get a ride, that was actually shot in a freeway in Miami or LA (she said people didn’t believe it was her lol). A few years ago, Madonna gave a speech at the Billboard Women of the Year award talking about it. She said she was called a w****, antichrist, s*** etc because of Erotica And she said she has always been so inspired by Bowie and his androgyny, but she realized that men could explore their artistic and sexual limits and women couldn’t. Watch this speech too, is very interesting when she points that Prince could use fishnets and nobody would say nothing bad about it. After Erotica, Madonna released Bedtime Stories and Human Nature, the answer to the media and the critiques to Erotica, was included. So now you understand the narrative behind these three videos. Again, always a pleasure to see you reacting. You are so smart and can’t wait for the next. Sorry if wrote too much. ❤️

    Madonna grew up with a lot of brothers who were shirtless all the time. You totally get how simple her message was. I followed her career since the beginning when I was a mere 5 years old. I remember during this era she was angry at the hypocrisy of what male artists were able to get away with in videos as far as objectifying women sexually and being explicit while being praised instead of being called whores so she went over the top with this album/videos and the corresponding SEX book she released. She wanted to make people uncomfortable and confront them with their own hypocrisy over what they called her out for vs what the male artists were praised for. That's what always made her a legit artist to me. She wasn't just making pop music. She had real messages and points to prove with her music/shows/videos.

    Great video and you're spot on with your analysis. To people who weren't around at the time (or too young to remember), it's worth knowing that the video may not be *that* shocking now, but in the pre-Internet era you had to go out of your way really to see pornographic type imagery and it certainly wasn't the done thing to show this much nudity in mainstream videos. It's not like now where you have Nicki Minaj and people like that waving their butts in music videos. Madonna was also really right up there at the peak of her popularity immediately before this with her Blonde Ambition Tour / Vogue / Dick Tracy era and although she was known to be provocative and sexual in her work, she still managed to shock the mainstream with Erotica. In fact, the mainstream media tried to "cancel" her and almost succeeded for a short time in making her Public Enemy Number One in terms of the "moral health" of the nation. She took hit after hit and although she battled on and eventually overcame the prejudice, it did affect her psychologically as she later admitted. Still, it perhaps overshadowed what was a very creative and experimental era for her not only in terms of visual imagery but also sonically. It's a brave and progressive album, which I think now is getting the critical recognition that it deserved at the time.

    Please listen to the entire album. It’s one of the most underrated pieces of art ever done. The album was ahead of its time. It’s barebones house music. Artistically done with very little production. Madonna broke every rule and every female artist that came after her, owes her a great deal of respect. The video isn’t offensive to those who are open minded. But in 1992, largely due to homophobia because of AIDS, people lost their minds and punished Madonna for what she created. It’s very tame in today’s world when a song like “WAP” can rule the charts for months. Without “Erotica,” there would be no “WAP.”

    The problem 30 years ago specially in America is that they heavily criticized Madonna when she did Justify My Love, Erotica and Sex book... While they allow Prince, George Michael, David Bowie to express their sexuality..... They crowned Mariah & Whitney as Queens so they could get rid of Madonna, and that's because these two were controlled by men... And these men just want women to beautiful, sexy, and nice but doesn't want women to be on top of them, to have a voice, to be in control of their career and life, or to challenge their status quo.

    This MV and song was released alongside her controversial photo book called sex which was photo imagery of things that were considered taboo such as fetishes, lesbianism, Homosexuality and older with younger. She was an activist that liked to push buttons. In the book itself there were Supermodels and also pornographic film stars that appeared in the different photos and themes presented in the book. While many were outraged by it the people who were the topics of the communities she was shedding a light on ate it up and people were fighting for copies of the book. While many thought it was pornographic it was actually all tastefully photographed and artistic.

They did the same thing with Josephine Baker, MadeWest, Marilyn Monroe, and Madonna. They fear societal change. These women challenged perceptions and broadened perspectives. As for feminists, madonna showed a new side of feminism where she was in control of her sexuality and presented a powerful, fearless representation of feminism without guilt, shame or apology.

      You don't have to be Madonna for your kids to question your past. but she stands by her work and the point she was making. It's a sex positive message for adults and was made as a response to females only being actors in male sexual fantasies. As with a lot of her work misogeny and double standards on "what women are socially allowed to do" are addressed here. At the time interviewers never bothered to even try and delve into why this video is an important feminist Statement.

    Erotica is one of her most intellectual videos. Consider the early 90s in the USA and how conservative things were (compared to the late 90s which experienced a zeitgeist) - Madonna was skating on very thin ice and received so much flak, that it almost became a feat of endurance. Erotica and the Sex book came out at a time when she was going down a rabbit hole of the contrast to this conservative wave, people were still finding little dingy erotic shops and xxx stores to get their porn and experience their fetishes. Madonna chose to explore that shadow of humanity and bring it to the light. She also firsted many celebs in the Sex book, people like Naomi Campbell, Vanilla Ice & Isabella Rossellini for example. This in itself was a feat as the book was predicted to cause scandal. When I was growing up with MTV I remember Erotica would be played (and played a lot) after midnight along with the the other darker videos (the late 90s had a slew of excellent music videos with very dark themes - which were more gruesome than sexual). I always loved Erotica for its sound, inspired by erotica novels, female fantasy, grainy textures - an immersion for the unknowing conservative person going through one of these New York alley XXX stores and getting schooled. Madonna is a master and a posthuman. Hard to know now how much this sort of thing challenged the status quo and how many artists today have her to thank.

    At that time she launched 3 things... The album EROTICA, the book SEX (with pretty explicit photographs of what u saw in this vídeo. And u didn´t notice, but... There were some famous people on it: Isabela Roseline, NAOMI CAMPBELL, Vanilla Ice, etc... ) and a movie: BODY OF EVIDENCE... After that she got so much backslash. Specially after gave David Letterman an underwear live. After that she released BEDTIME STORIES... And made a video that u should react: HUMAN NATURE... A very good response to all those who critizied her...

    You are right, she isn't singing in this song, she is reading one page of her book she released along the album, her book 'SEX' and all the images from the video are from the same shootings of the pics from the book 🍌

    Can I say .. I was big fan back in the day (as a teen) .. she was huge .. but I don’t think I ever saw “erotica the uncensored version” ever .. I can see it’s a little risqué tho .. she’s deffo the queen of controversy ..😆

    Lol. Yeah the word you are looking for is actually the title of the song, "erotica." There is a BIG difference between "erotic" art and "pornography." Also the lighting effect you are trying to describe is "strobe." A strobe effect can cause an epileptic person to have seizures actually. FYI. Glad you like the music, the whole album is awesome actually and in a very similar style.
