If this was me, I would have lost the rat lure about 10 min in with a cast into a tree or brush. Tied something else on, had a bite near that big log, but lost the fish as it buried itself under the log. The only fish I would have caught on the day would be near the end of the video. I would have casted over that tree hanging over he river with the lure dropping almost vertically down from the limb into the water LOL. For some reason every time I do that by accident fish bite and I manage to get them over the tree.

I've caught 5 carp on lures in my life. One one a crawdad crankbait the rest on Rooster Tail spinners. What a surprise! My dad wouldn't believe me at all.
I was surprised I got seven carp on one trip this past summer on a finesse topwater lure when the mayfly hatch was going on. That trip about doubled the total number of carp I’ve caught on lures in my life. I was more hoping for smallmouth that day but the carp were just as much fun to catch!
@@ndyakangler I love fishing carp at the Coon Rapids dam here in MN. I've only ever used Quaker oats to catch em, though. I put a small pile of them in the palm of my hand, wet them and then form a ball. Throw it on a smallish circle hook with a decent weight about a foot up the line, and they stroke it like they haven't eaten in a month. They put up an excellent fight.
The guy is top notch, good flow. Cast accuracy I've mentioned before. We don't want him to give away his honey hole but it would be cool to know general area. I suspect he'd catch anywhere.
@@MT-pi3ct I think he's mainly in Western Minnesota and the Eastern parts of the Dakota's. I remember one video where he was down around the twincities fishing below a damn with ice on the water, and he was still nailing them.
I like his somehow high quality simplicity. The footage is clear and stable, the editing is smooth and not over done, yet his kayak, fishing gear, and videos are simplistic, but high quality. He has the perfect balance of quality gear, quality production, and quality fishing content.

In my 28 years of smallmouth fishing in Little River,..which is located in Rockford Tennessee,....the edge of the current,...where the water breaks and swirls back??? That's where I've caught the majority of smallmouth. They love sitting and facing upstream,...waiting for free food to go by. Very opportunistic predators. More so than largemouth. Imo Those are beautiful specimens of smallmouth your reeling in my friend. Absolutely gorgeous. That golden brown and Carmel color is just stunning.
Matt, I must have a serious case of the winter blues. The spot where you caught the first fish. Rocky bottom shallow flat, shoal area made me day dream about getting out and walking some big flats so I can work all it has to offer and hit various spots without having to twist and turn and try to reposition the boat. I have caught many big fish off such a spot. When I see that pebble strewn bottom close to the surface my pulse starts to rise, it is soo fishy to me. The same thing happened today watching your video. I was there in the moment with you. Now back to reality and bummed out.

Congrats on the new kayak! I’m hoping to get mine out in the next week or two. We’re starting to get some above freezing temps and although most of the water here is still covered in a couple feet of ice there’s a few options for open water.
It was driving me nuts that I didn't know right away where this stretch of river is. I've been able to ID most of your favorite ND locations, as I had travelled through this neck of the "few woods" for many years. But this one had me stumped for a long time, despite the building. Goes to show that the best fishing is often the places no one else knows to fish (don't worry, I won't tell and I don't get to go there anymore myself). That's probably the best thing about where you live and fish - you don't have 100's of people fishing right next to you. Like my favorite 44"+ Musky and Pike spot on a tiny remote bay of Lake of the Woods....the locals know about it, but few fish, and they only like fishing for Wall-Eye.

I go fishing with about 18 rods and 37 lbs of lures and maybe catch a fish or two. You go fishing with a single rod and a single lure and catch tons of amazing fish. It seems like there should be a lesson to be learned here.

I live in northern, Maine and nothing makes me happier than catching smallmouth on a light spinning rod and reel. The only thing that beats it is on a fly rod!
Come to Minnesota there’s plenty of them! They’re fun to catch if that’s what you’re after but if I’m fishing bass in clear water with no leader the pike can get expensive when they start thinning out the tackle box.

Northern Grit if there’s lots of pike or musky, I started bringing wire with me and making my own leaders . It doesn’t effect the action of whopper plopper, haven’t tried a rat yet though.

I live in northern, Maine and nothing makes me happier than catching smallmouth on a light spinning rod and reel. The only thing that beats it is on a fly rod!

Come to Minnesota there’s plenty of them! They’re fun to catch if that’s what you’re after but if I’m fishing bass in clear water with no leader the pike can get expensive when they start thinning out the tackle box.

Northern Grit if there’s lots of pike or musky, I started bringing wire with me and making my own leaders . It doesn’t effect the action of whopper plopper, haven’t tried a rat yet though.
Smallmouth always put up the best fight!
