man pike are easy, theyd probably bite at a hunk of steel on a line if you threw one hah, muskies are a bit more evasive but still not impossible if you learn about them. just keep it up and have fun on the water :)
Matt, I cant tell you how much I’ve learned from watching your videos. From paddling with one hand, how you position your net, your kayak setup, and most importantly, your level of calmness in landing a big fish. Just last week I purchased a whopper plopper 110 in perch color because of this pike vid and proceeded to catch over a dozen pike and a dozen largemouth soon after. You’ve seriously improved my kayak fishing and for that I can’t thank you enough. Keep up the amazing work! By far the best fishing videos out there!
A sick day is always legit. Lol. You're sick of working and need a good day fishing! Just like huntin season and you have a bad fever so you call in sick. Just don't tell em it's buck fever.👍🤣
I have never fished for Pike or Muskie but I see why any angler would want to! They explode over the lure, what could be more exciting? Thanks, Matt I actually look forward to getting home and watching you fish! Just Thank You.
This channel is not underrated....I rate it as real & one of the best... it is non-frabricated (not like slick promotionals...geared for ads) but, rather, basic fun on the water... with exciting results. It's not exuding the biggest, or best, or the bragging "non- rights", ...it's the joy of fishing, rain or shine. Hmmmmm ? Wish I were there...Thanks for sharing the adventures and your experiences.
I love the simple way you do your video presentation. No branding all over the place, No $70,000 boat with twenty thousand dollars in electronics. Just a simple kayak with a good rod and a reel. The top water action is just the best. Love seeing those big fish just smash those top water baits. Even i get a jolt when a fish smashes it close to the kayak. Keep up the great work
When @NDYakAngler is saying “That was sick!” and “Holy Crap!” several times in one video it’s gotta be an exceptional day on the water 😎 I literally jumped a couple of times with some of those strikes - thanks so much for a great adventure on the river 👍👍
One thumbs up and a sub isn't enough, I've watched 3 videos and they're possibly the 3 best fishing videos I've seen on RUclips. Great fishing and the host doesn't nonstop talk, everything he says means something and that's rare to find.
Been watching your videos all day while we have a snow storm outside. Made my day. If I was younger I maybe would move. I love your presentation. No BS....just lots of fishing action. Great editing too. Thanks.
I just found this channel and I love it. Your calm but still excited reactions and the respectful way you handle the fish remind me so much of fishing with my dad when I was a kid.. only he called pike and muskie 'Slimy Canadian Alligators' and hated catching them.
To a Legendary Fisherman: Thank You Larry Dahlberg for creating the Whopper Plopper! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I remember watching him, Al Linder, Doug Stange, and more from the In Fisherman VHS 📼 Cassette Tapes back in the 90’s.
Just coming out of one of the coldest winters I can remember, and these videos are what have kept me sane for the past 5 months. Can't wait to get back in the kayak this spring. Keep it up, Matt...you rock.
Such an amazing escape from all of the politics and strife we’re being fed. Just a good man having a nice time with nothing to think about but the fishing and the fun. Love it!!
My newest favorite fishing channel!!! Dude, you rock. Love seeing those big effing pike and muskies attack!!! I appreciate the no bells and whistles, just good fishing!!! Thank you.
Just wanted to thank you for letting me come along with you! I don't get out and fish as much as I use to, but you bring it to me! I enjoy it so much! Keep up the excellent videos, love the way you comment and edit the videos! Just like I'm there!
Absolutely amazing how some of those pike nailed the plopped right up bye the boat! Love how I got to watch that big dude chase and hammer 🔨 that lure! Thank You so much for letting me go along.
I don’t fish freshwater, never seen a bass. But I love your videos, no hype, no music, just the sounds of nature, low key. You capture what it is that makes me fish. Anyway I picked up one of these to try on snook here in Florida in the lagoon/river I yak on. Cheers!
I have the same whopper plopper. Perch 110. That bait has caught more fish than any other I own. There are so many teeth marks on it. If I ever lost it, I think I'd cry. I was really amazed at how aggressive those pike were! They acted more like musky where you do the figure 8 and catch em boatside! Really awesome video footage.

Wow bro that was some epic freaking footage!!! How awesome when he swam under the kayak and you ran the lure back and forth, that was incredible live action right there!!
Whispering to yourself over and over again “that’s a real nice musky” “come back, come back”, trying to stay calm usually results in a good day of fishing lmao!!!
I've watched a ton a fishing videos and I must say , this guys (sorry but I don't know your name) are by far the best ones I have seen. Must appreciated & Thanks so much.
Sir, I have watched some of your vids in the past. This one I watch today, and that Pike follow to the boat and "enticement" from your rod gets him to bite. That strike alone bought you a subscriber my friend. Well done Sir...Well done! Look forward to more!
I'm really enjoying your videos. Like many others have commented, your laid back style keeps the focus on the fishing and makes your videos so enjoyable to watch. I also wanted to let you know that after watching this video, I ordered a set of Whopper Ploppers (I had never even heard of them before), and tried them for the first time today. I just wanted to see the action so I took a few casts off a little dock on Lake Wingra here in Madison, WI (it's a small lake 336 acres with a max depth of 14 feet), and on about the 4th cast I hooked into what turned out to be a 38" musky - my first ever! I didn't have steel leader or a landing net but the guys at the Wingra Boat house come to my rescue with a net and helped me land the fish and get a picture. Now I can't wait to get out on my kayak with the Whopper Ploppers and try some other spots around the lake. Thanks!
You don't even react to big dutch youtubers when they ask you a question for collaborations because you feel to important to... Why should he even react to you, let alone go fish with you 😂🤣?

WWWWOW. I HAVE BEEN A TROUT FISHER FOR 4 DECADES AND THESE MUSKIES AND PIKE, ACTUALLY SCARE ME WHEN I WATCH FOOTAGE LIKE THAT, SO FREAKY AGGRESSIVE, SO OUT OF THIS WORLD. WELL DONE DUDE.
Great fun! Though I live in steelhead/salmon country, my favorite game fish is a pike. I love the way they ambush the bait and even though catch and release is the name of the game, they taste so good I always keep at least one for the skillet. Yum!
Thanks for all your work, your videos are just perfect! I've been fishing for local muskies with no success until I watched this and picked up a choppo 120 - last weekend I had a decent muskie or pike come straight up at it, but he must have been cross-eyed because he missed by about a foot. The strike was close to the boat and boy did it wake me up! Shame I didn't land him but that was my first massive topwater strike, so thank you for showing us how it's done. Congrats on that massive smallie on Grandpa's mouse lure btw!
Ok I went back to the same spot this weekend and hooked into a muskie on the Choppo after maybe 20 minutes on the water. It was such an exciting strike, and I had it to the boat in about a minute. Unfortunately my split ring didn't hold up and it ripped open with the lure still in the fish before I could net her. I feel terrible for her, going to go back and pray that I catch her again to get it out. Otherwise that lure is gold! BTW she was about as long as my 42 inch jon boat is wide!
This is like 10th video im watching from your channel, insta subscribed. Your style in fishing is awesome, your voice is so calm and filming is awesome. Loving your channel, keep it going!
I would always when pike and musky fishing use 8lb test with a foot long black 50 pound steel leader. Always made sure to have a real with over 200 yards on it. Made for exciting fishing on lite tackle. I miss fishing the monsters, great video.
As usual killer vid! Be careful with that 50lb, I had it break on the hookset once so now never go less than 80. There are some thin tie able wires out there though. Flurocarbon sinks as well and is pretty bulky when you get past 50lb.
Happened across this video 2 weeks before a trip to northern MN. This lure out-fished everything else I brought and turned an average trip into a "I am too tired to catch anymore fish" trip. You earned my subscription.

This place is amazing, it has a lot of fish, congratulations your fishing was beautiful!👍🎣🐠
@@NapTheCreeper wtf do YOU MEAN. ever heard of mill lake? if u have a boat, go to the first 2 island's and u will jig. There's 20 pound pike in there and i'm not kidding. my dad caught a 15 pound pike in there and my papa caught a 21 pounder in there, we were gonna throw it back but it bit his hand and so, we kept it. it was gonna die anyway's due to the gill being cut and shit. Tight lines!
The way I see it when fishing a topwater lure a steel leader is going to sink down in front of the lure any time I pause it. When I miss a strike I like to pause the lure like it was stunned, then give it some light twitches to make it look injured. With a steel leader it’s going to sink down in front of the face of the fish staring down my lure, then to give it a light twitch I’ll have to pull in that slack the sinking leader created which is going to effect the action of the twitch. I’m sure sometimes the fish, especially pike, won’t care but sometimes they’re picky and either of those two reasons could be a difference maker in them deciding not to bite. I know fluoro sinks too but it’s not nearly as heavy/dense as steel. I’ll have to pause it next to me next time I use a fluoro leader and see if it does sink, as far as I could tell the buoyancy of the lure and the braided line was enough to hold that fluoro leader on the surface like a bridge.
Matt just found your channel absolutely fantastic channel I'm from the uk have fished in the USA many times great videos packed with lots of information to help any angler this is my favorite chanel now keep up the great work matt stay safe buddy,Dellboy
This was one of the best ones I've seen in 2020. I'm going to get one of those and try in saltwater. When i catch one on it I'm let you know.. Great job..
I bought a Whopper Plopper because of this channel. Had it two days, used maybe 10 hours total, already caught five bass from my friends dock. Can't wait to use it out on the boat. It's a real fun bait to use.
Excellent video! Love that even when that musky chomped your thumb, you kept your cool. Keep up the good work and I hope you have many more days like this!
Just reviewed this video with the plopper. It refreshed my memory that I should have remembered watching this video before asking you if you ever used the Wopper Plopper before. I still have a hard time comprehending that there are small rivers in the country that have such large fish, large quantities of fish and so many different species. Thanks for sharing your fishing adventures again.
The Whopper Plopper 110 is awesome. I also really like all sizes of the Berkley Choppo and they’re only $10 with the same quality. Gotta have both brands though... they sound a little different and sometimes they prefer one over the other.
Smallies blowing up on top water makes my heart skip a beat sometimes, I can just imagine fishing for these monsters on top water, I my have a heart attack with some of the blow ups from the kayak lol awesome footage and awesome fish man!!
@@dylanlunn7 Now there will be 6 guys chucking whopper ploppers back there this weekend. I know where most of the spots he fishes are by having youtube and a google maps page open and referencing landmarks to overhead imagery, but I would never post the locations in the open and degrade the content that gets put out because the fishing pressure goes through the roof.
@@foragefarmer1300 you must have never fished there before.. its normal to have several fisherman in this area.. its one of the most popular spots around my dude.. and just like you said, everybody can tell the location by watching the video and looking at landmarks anyways so stop being a dick and hiding beautiful spots from people who want to adventure the few nice places we have around here.
A fella in Wausau told my husband something, that works like a charm! While fishing top water Rapala lures,...if a Musky strikes at a top water, and you miss him, hurry to put down that pole, and pick up another rod, with a crawdad or worm on it, and start jogging the spot where he struck your top water. They will hit the worm on the way down! Works almost ever time!
Man I saw that thumb bite from a mile away I was cringing before it happened. Great video tho so much action has to be amazing to watch it up close like that
He is the Bob Ross of fishing. Quiet, calm, soothing, no screaming, yelling, over excited orgasmic moaning and exclamations. Just low keyed enjoyment.
No orgasmic moaning 😂😂 couldn’t agree more
ohww yess he is!, so relaxing to listen.
Most underrated fishing channel on RUclips
Better than a lot of other RUclips videos. The footage is good and experience behind the rod&reel. I want to see more.
This is much much more enjoyable to watch, most other channels blast “relaxation” music...
Totally agree with comments thus far🐻🤗👍
Why is everything on RUclips underrated? Good channel though.
I agree. Love this guy. Although he makes me spend money on lures that prolly don't work where I live LOL like the spider bait hahaha
He caught more musky and Pike in one day than I have my entire life. Nice!
Anyone who’s caught a single pike or Muskie have caught more than I ever have 😂
probably a private river

The fish exploding on the lure was genuinely startling.
I probably would of jumped if that was me haha
Chain pickerel are the same. They are an invasive species in eastern Canada. We call those lures skitter poppers an the top water is amazing
Jitter bugs and those silver torpedoes with the propeller work well too
Sorry, I'm a fool for pickerel fishing

Right before he said "that was sick!", I said "that was sick!" out loud.
Ight just us?
awesome
I did the exact same thing
Me too
I think I said F-ing sick, close enough.
Hey these are some top notch unintentional asmr videos you make. Very soothing.
I’ve watched this like 10 times and his videos are what I inspire to be! Such great captures
I have the same net for when I go fishin it’s perfect
It was pretty awesome to get that pike right next to the boat even after it could see you and the boat. Nice job.
Pike are like the Honey Badgers of fresh water fish - they just don't give a F
8:30 am here. The birds and bugs In your video are harmonizing with the birds and bugs where Im at. Calming
Glass like water, thunderous strikes, it don’t get no better than that!
I suggest a long trailer hook you'll catch 90% of the bumpers
Awesome footage of the Pike strike at 3.31. I caught a pike once doing the same thing after a follow with a figure eight. I love Pike fishing!
Make more pike and muskie fishing vids i really love them
Those are the days we dream of brother. Excellent video
Still need to get me a Whopper Plopper...watched many videos with them.
Definitely a good one. I normally use the 110 like he is in this vid.
I found one in the Susquehanna River while wading, in perfect condition, have yet to try it out.
The Whopper Plopper 110 is awesome. I also really like all sizes of the Berkley Choppo and they’re only $10 with the same quality. Gotta have both brands though... they sound a little different and sometimes they prefer one over the other.
Ben Tackett yea hear the 75 is great. I’m in Florida so I typically use the bigger sizes
You can get some really good copies on Amazon for a third of the price, if you are down with that. I can’t afford 15$ lures.
Smallies blowing up on top water makes my heart skip a beat sometimes, I can just imagine fishing for these monsters on top water, I my have a heart attack with some of the blow ups from the kayak lol awesome footage and awesome fish man!!
What secluded river is this? I live in ND and haven't seen a place like this anywhere
Looks like right behind the lake ashtabula dam
@@dylanlunn7 Doesn't make it right.
@@foragefarmer1300 you're right. Being a nice person to other people isn't right. Ill stop.
I’ve done that several times with some type of jig on my backup rod!
9:50 I wouldn’t have been able to reel from the amount of adrenaline going through me😂😂😂
Looks like a great place to spend the day and catch some huge fish. Excellent video and fishing.
"Superglue the bite on your thumb." Sounds like a midwestern remedy
During the Vietnam Conflict, Superglue saved many a wounded GI from bleeding out.
Yessir, that was crazy looking... Followed you all the way to the boat, that looked freaking sweet dude. Good job!
How do you tell the difference between the pikes and the muskies, they look so similar
Pike green with small brown spots, Muskie brown with bigger spots that look like strips kind of like a Tiger
Pike's have spotting on them and muskies have more of a line pattern.
Mark Lavalla thank you so much
I can’t believe there are that many big pike and Muskie in that river. That is a great video. Thanks
Muskie: "You better let me go."
Fisherman: "Bite me."
Man I saw that thumb bite from a mile away I was cringing before it happened. Great video tho so much action has to be amazing to watch it up close like that
