Didn't think I could do a century because of prior knee issues and lack of training, but hey, sometimes our limitations are more in our head than in reality. How are you limiting yourself?

Hey man I live in Vegas too, Summerlin area. We should ride together. I’d say we’re about the same age too.
I’ve done 78 miles before, but that was precovid. I want to get into it again. Need someone to ride with. Let me know if you’re interested.

“Be content with what you have.”
“The bike isn’t holding me back, I’m holding me back.”
These are wonderful words of wisdom, I love it. I’m adopting this as my pedaling mantra.

    Amazing video, Dr. Jubbal!
Pre-med student here and cycling enthusiast as well! Really cool that you did your first century! Hope you can do another amazing ride in the future. I also once did a long bike ride loop with a friend from SJ --> SF in California. I agree, preparing nutrition and hydration is key! Also having the right tools to keep you going (tire levers, hand pump, patches, extra tubes). One thing my friend and I always reminded each other was that the ride was never about the getting from point A to point B, but it was about the hardships and shenanigans on the way that made it all worthwhile.
Your comment about being content with what you have also resonated with me. I currently ride a rat bike as a commuter/gravel bike (refurbished '95 Diamond Back Ascent). And I take this baby everywhere -- trails, singletrack, and paved roads. But yeah, definitely agree with your statement that "if anything, I am holding the bike back". I used to think my bike was too old to take to trails, but with a little more effort each time, I proved to myself that I was wrong to think that. I don't think I'll ever replace this old steel bike.
Be safe riding our there, and give those Pinarello Dogma +Di2 owners a run for their money! It's all in the rider, not the bike!

Awesome video, I completely agree on the pressure to upgrade bikes. That’s a good concept also “the bike is not holding me back, I’m holding the bike back.”

My first century I was like your friend - I hit a wall around mile 70 and it just got worse. I was happy to be able to finish. I actually had to cycle more than just 100 miles too as the race was 109 miles and I cycled to and from the race.

Man you did that video after 100 mile ride? That's even more impressive. 😂 I haven't done century in few year but last time i did it was from south side of Chicago to Wisconsin border and back. We didn't finish cause we git caught in rain but we did ride 140 mile. Full ride was 160 or 170 i think

    • @kevinjubbalmd

Just did 120km - 75 miles. I ate after the first hour and then once every 40 minutes. I also had no desire to go fast, and my route was flat. I got off the bike and was not exhausted and I didn't even need a nap. Strava said my relative effort was harder than usual but not crazy, so I think I went about doing distance the best way... slow, easy and lots of eating. Bonus, I made myself RICE CAKES w/ bacon and egg. It was nice to eat midway... other than that I ate sports bars, but always had a different one (variety is crucial as well on the bicycle).... I also finished it off the last 45 minutes with a Red Bull... I think this is the goal... if you can go for an 8 hour hike in the forest, then you can do the same thing on a bicycle, its just when you're hiking you're not burning the same number of calories and can wait to eat, you can't make that mistake on the bicycle, waiting is never a good idea, get eating after the first hour and eat often if you're gonna be on the bike over 2 hours.

Who cares about the time you did it in? The important part is that it was completed. If you can do it once, you can do it again, and much more easily after you've recognized the flaws of the first run.
