I would love to hear your comments about your first century ride? Where was it, what was the toughest part, have you done more since????

Thanks coach. Almost 16 minutes of no foul language I have to hide from my grandson. Your content as always is good. I have only done 25 mile rides, but the century is always on my mind. Very good plan doing it around my home.

Hi, I’ve just completed my first 100 mile event and I want to do more. This video makes a lot of sense. I wished I had watched it before. If I was a professional cyclist I would love to have you as a coach because you tell it like it is.

Hi Scott, Thanks for this video. At 73 I agree with you it's nearly all in the mind. As the distances get longer, the mindset becomes ever more important. Hydration, food as you say should be taken little and often.
I've referred some of my beginner club mates to your coaching videos. I hope they get as much from them as I do. Thanks

Iv watched quite a few 'getting ready for a century' videos, and this one is the most organized, thoughtful, and informative one. Thanks So much for all of the content you create on your channel. A Lot of it has been very helpful.

    Pacing!
Pacing is soo important on long rides.
One doesn't ride the century at 90% FTP.
When we start, the body doesn't know how it should dose energy so it offers the regular amount one uses on short rides.
For long rides, it's best to start (and continue!) way slower than usual.

I had 5th knee injury 2 years ago (joint already devastated with no ACL). Doctor told me to ride a lot will be good for my rehab. 2 weeks after the injury I did first time 250km. That was nice feeling to across 200km barrier. Now I am preparing to go over 300km. Dream about 500km granfondo, but at 45 I still feel too newbie for that :)

Great vid’. Did my 2nd Century yesterday around the vale of Glamorgan- thankfully I’d already ticked all the boxes on this video glad to say. What really helped in addition was my Garmin - I kept it on the route map rather than watch the kms ticking along and the Myriad of other stats and numbers

Did a 100 mile club ride. Rode north with a south tailwind. Turned for home. A cold front passed thru, so we did almost the entire century with a tail wind!!!

Great idea to use the home as a base to go back and forth. So many great tips, thanks as always Scott! I use a RoadID rubber bracelet as well for safety. I don’t go anywhere without it.

I can remember my first century ride and the conversations with myself. After the 70 or so mile mark I'm asking myself, have you lost your mind? What in the hell are you trying to prove by riding in a big circle for 5 hours in this hot Florida sun? I actually enjoy riding 2-50 mile rides twice a week and just can't convince myself to hammer out those long 5 to six hour rides anymore. Our local bike club offers many supported century rides throughout the year with fully stocked rest areas every 20 miles or so and sag support. The problem is they were $35.00 a few years ago and have doubled in price. It's hard for me to get motivated spending $75.00 dollars and 5 to 6 hours on a saddle, but that's just me and everybody is different.

Great video 👍 what food is best for 60 g of carbs an hour? Labelling can be quite vague

If your ride is going over 2 hours then you need to focus on the fuel you need to complete. Planning is essential and so is your pre loading. I would suggest that you start by experimenting with some brand products. I use OTE - I links with lots of brands but I use several and don’t promote! They work for me as I have ulcerative colitis and struggle with foods. Avoid gels if you can (unless racing at high intensity) and stick with bars. Then start to experiment with making your own flapjacks using honey etc. You can easily create 20g of CHO in bars.
I am going to taking about carb loading and how to use carbs etc in your training etc in my next video podcast #29 (Monday 15th March) 👍

I get cramp every time I try to ride over 4 hours. Not feeling tired and still feel like I have a lot of power in the legs when I get it… can’t do any pushing on the pedals after that point because every time I do that the cramps set in and my legs lock up :(
Fueling well with 2x 750ml bottles with electrolytes per hour and some food every 30-45min.
What could be the problem here? I’ve been riding for 10+ years and this only started happening recently
    Thanks!

Always difficult with cramp but I often refer to the fact that most of have the fitness and the mindset to ride for 4 hours but do we have the joint strength, joint health and muscular strength/stability? I would step back from things and look at any particular drills that could develop any of these in the area you get cramps. Really hope you get it sorted 👍👍

Solid food takes too long to get into your system gels work much quicker.
