    I am from Iran and enjoying this piece thoroughly. As you may know,, there is a large population of Armenians living in Iran. I have had the pleasure of meeting and knowing many of them in my life and one could not ask for better folks anywhere. Iranians are blessed to have Armenians as countrymen. True Christians and Humans.
    I love min 11 by the way the best.

      Hal Watson Good point. I just noticed that I didn't find out about him until I did my own research, whereas other Soviet-era composers like Prokofiev and Shostakovitch are more part of mainstream knowledge in western Europe & the Americas. Also I didn't know what Space Odyssey was until now :P

    • @Zsnakeistaken
      @Zsnakeistaken 8 лет назад +2

      +nekopls Part of that could be the distinction between symphonies and ballet works. Those who know of Shostakovich primarily think of his major symphonies or quartets. I don't know anyone (including myself) who points to his operas. I feel like those who enjoy Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov would naturally hear of Khachaturian, but not necessarily fans of Rachmaninov and Shosty

    • @phenom7149
      @phenom7149 8 лет назад +3

      Zsnakeistaken Makes sense. I used to be a ballet dancer so many of the composers I know I was introduced to through ballet. That often means a disparity between ballets that are performed and revived often (e.g. Tchaikovsky, Minkus) and not so often (Khachaturian). I guess we always knew about Spartacus, as that's popular enough, but Gayane and other Soviet ballets have mostly disappeared, aside from Flames of Paris (albeit an altered version) and Romeo and Juliet. The first of Khachaturian that I consciously listened to outside Spartacus was the Piano Concerto.
      Why would Tchaikovsky & Rimsky-Korsakov fans be more likely to know Khachaturian? I don't doubt you, but it's an interesting observation considering the other two you mentioned were 20th century, Soviet Union - like Khachaturian - whereas the others are from the previous era. I'm not the most well-read on music history, just to point out (more of a casual listener). :P

      The themes of the work have to do with collectivization, universal values of work and loyalty to the community. It works against nationalism and division into ethnic groups as rivals. So it makes sense that the musical traditions are all brought to the table and shared as well. It brings the themes of the story into the composition itself.
      This work has a very similar theme, talking about ownership or distribution of good things, to the great play of Bertolt Brecht, "The Caucasian Chalk Circle." In both play and ballet, there is a "rightful" owner to a child, or a woman and child, who does not take good care of them, but abuses or abandons them. The woman and child, who represent the goodness of the earth and the future, respectively, are taken away from the bad owner and end up with those who prove they can love and take good care of them, and bring forth their potential. Standards of who "owns" something are anti-traditional.

      Stalin commissioned this work in order to try to maintain the loyalty of the many nationalities of the Caucasus, some of whom were defecting to the invading Germans. Beyond that I perceive no political content in the music. I think the above political interpretation is rubbish. Just be satisfied to enjoy the gorgeous music of the culturally ancient Caucasus.

    There have been a number of different inclusions of favorite sections in suites recorded over the years. It is amazing to hear the whole ballet! Finally... Up until now I had never heard the whole thing. Beautiful. And I figured out which pieces are in the suites that for most of us has been the only glimpse into the whole work.
    For those wanting to figure out which ones are in one of the more usual combinations here they are in the order that the suite of 8 of them selected from two of Khatchaturian's original suites he excerpted from the ballet... which don't seem to be recorded as he set them up. I have them numbered as the tracks are listed above. (but note that #24 and 27 are the same... duplicates but out of order with different names...
    Gayaneh/Gayne suite as I first heard it on a 1947 recording by Efrem Kurtz
    (a mix apparently of pieces from Khatchaturian's first and third suites... and from the original scoring not obviously Khatchaturian's later 1957 revision)
    Sabre Dance - (49 act 3 scene 2)
    Dance of Ayshe - (36 Act 3 Scene 1)
    Dance of the Rose Maidens - (18 Act 2 scene 1)
    Dance of the Kurds (Mountaineers) - (37 Act 3 Scene 1)
    Lullaby - (24 Act 2 scene 1).... (same as 27 Act 2 Scene 2, Misforture of Armen (1:01:30)
    Dance of the Young Kurds/Mountaineers - (38 Act 3 Scene 1)
    Armen´s Variations - (03.Prologue, Dance of the friends) 16:07 - 17:44 (1:37)

    Sadly people in the US know so little about Armenia, from the centuries of wars and genocide (due to its geographical location) to the beauty of the land, to the several amazing geniuses who were born and/or raised there. Aram Katchaturian is surely one of those geniuses (but for 2001 & Aliens, his brilliant music might be more obscure than it already is). George Ivanovich Gurdjieff (G. I. Gurdjieff) is another.
    Gurdjieff's ideas are wide ranging & impossible to precis in 10,000 words, much less a small paragraph here - search for 'In Search of the Miraculous' and 'The Psychology of Man's Possible Evolution' by P. D. Ouspensky for a substantive introduction - they can both be found as free PDFs.
    One of G's greatest admirers was Frank Lloyd Wright; one wonders is Aram knows of Gurdjieff, and, if so, how he views his fellow Armenian.

      Thank you for introducing me to George Ivanovich Gurdjieff. He seems to be very interesting. I want to know more about him. I have already made a google search and found some very interesting documents on him.

    This is absolutely brilliant, filled with tremendous orchestration and well recorded. Why is this not performed very often if at all? I never hear of a ballet company adding this to their season of programming.

      @@arampianist thank you for the explanation! I didn't realize that Armenia was part of USSR, my bad. When I was reading about Khachaturian's life it read "Russian citizen", not "Soviet", that's why I thought that he was born and raised in Russia and he had Armenian roots.
      However even though I didn't know this important detail I found it really unfair (but normal during the communism) that originally the main character was Armenian but he had to rewrite it to make her Russian. But then I was born and raised in communistic Czechoslovakia so I know that the Russians were dictating everything.
      Best greetings 🍀

    We have very talented and great, world renown, Armenian composers ... I am proud to be 100% Armenian. For those of you who think this is another's music, then you aren't listening to the 'Armenian' in "Gayaneh". Those who are true Armenians will know what I'm speaking about.

    Otro ejemplo de una obra "fagocitada" por la popularidad de alguno de sus movimientos (la Danza del sable). Es un Ballet precioso, de principio a fin y debe escucharse de manera íntegra.
