I bought the three pack large directly from tortoise. Around $18 with shipping. These are for when you lost or forgot the better fire lighting stuff, but still have your sak. Seems sturdy and has detailed directions. Could come in real handy.
1:28 Yes. I have an idea of them (Victorinox?) making a diamond knife sharpener in the shape of that larger ferro rod. Would probably be the most useful item to come on your SAK, since *everyones* blade is going to dull in the future with more use of it. ;) I know, I know, they made a knife sharpener the size of a pen, yet I still think so many more people would love the small one that'd fit inside the toothpick hole. Way more people would buy that, imo. If someone could make a plastic container in the shape of the tinder (that comes with the FireAnt), to fit the whole corkscrew, for people to put tiny items inside, this would also be cool!
I've got mine about a week ago. I ordered a pack of 8 - 4 long, 4 short, different colors. I am NOT happy. I have 6 different SAKs and either the Firefly didn't stay in the scales or I couldn't get them in at all. The only one, was a short one which replaced a large toothpick in my Ranger Grip 78.
because i use the toothpick i carry the firefy hidden underneath of the saw.be sure that you use it with the right way..use the thin side to strike it and support the firefly with your finger,i have a video about, how to use,how to carry and some extra tips..
Excellent idea! I haven't found much use for the toothpicks, and have gone for the versions that replace it with a pen (small models). Five dollars a piece is not cheap, but I don't think it's that excessive. It's a backup of a backup that you only use in an emergency when your primary fire starter is not available. It'd be interesting to see how easy they are to damage, though, since the cross section is so thin.
Showing the Firefly fire starter which can replace the toothpick on Swiss knives. - PS There is an updated list/links for some of my favorite Swiss Knives in the text description box, enjoy :D
Finally! :D I Love my fiireflys! Its just a backup to a bigger steel (Its small so it wont last forever, better to use the bigger ones first :P) But its always there and sparks great! :D
To Augustus McRae and any other disparagers of the SAK toothpick. First 👍 on your first name Augustus I dig it! However I must jovially and respectfully 👎your comment as a purist SAK fanboy. The toothpick is essential to any EDC SAK! And has been a must for any SAK I've carried, and has been tremendously useful over the 25 years I've been carrying a Victorinox as my EDC knife. Apart from its apparent usefulness of picking out those little Morsels of steak stuck in your teeth after devouring a tasty ribeye, it has also been very useful in cleaning dirt and debris out of tiny nooks and crannies in objects without damaging surfaces that might otherwise be damaged if using say your small knife blade or other metal implements. Also if you dont have fingernails and are trying to remove that dang plastic covering they put on electronics and other things for protecting the surface the toothpick works excellent for doing that as well. I could keep going but I think I've rambled on long enough for you to get my drift or to have stopped reading due to my rambling. Anyhow my dilemma is how to incorporate the awesome backup firefly product without losing the IMO invaluable toothpick. Might have to customize a scale to add another slot for it. 😁
Start a fire with this at the beginning of every video from here on out so that we can see how those things hold up lol Are your videos long enough yet you like that yeah
Good video again, but... you haven't read the instructions either, have you? :D To make sure that they don't break, you should support them with your finger, they say - and that's probably a good advice. But you are striking the right place: on the thin side, if I saw it well. By the way, the shorter ones are for the 58 mm SAK.
Thanks! In their video demo they use really dry grass that only requires a single stroke/spark, so the finger method makes sense. But my shavings require a lot more sparks to light up, so I didn’t want to put my fingertip or work glove that close to the "hotspot" that I needed to generate to light them. Instead, I just make sure not to use too much force, so it won’t break.
@@MartinBrabi I have tested it with the blade and the scissors. Both worked well, bu none of them are an ideal choice because they get dull. But in an emergency, I wouldn't mind dulling my scissors to be able to make fire, I guess. However, I have a Firefly in my Rambler, and the wire stripper on the 58 mm Combo-tool throws perfect sparks!
I know it's not as fun, but a plain old BIC is already compact, light weight, shaped for your pocket, dependable economical and lasts a long time. Another type of fire starter is the propane torch lighter, though not as compact but economical. Let your knife, be a knife....yes.
If you already carry a SAK, why not carry this as well. The toothpick is useless, but this really works, and a SAK is a great pocket tool any ways. If you dont carry a SAK, I guess its not enough to start carry one just bc of this but it really is a great tool for us SAK-fans :P And yes, I carry a lighter as well for 99% of my fires, this is just a back up that really works.
Ok. I appreciate you can make this start a fire, but why not just carry a lighter. If it’s about survival, you probably need to make a fire as quickly as possible, especially if you’re very cold. A Bic is cheap and reliable and for the price, you can always afford to have a new one in your pocket that’s full of fuel. If you can remember to bring your knife, you can remember to bring your lighter. Just saying.
$5 bucks each, yikes. Keep in mind since it's so thin I doubt you could use more than 50% of that thing since it would just snap off. Better to just buy a big ass firestick that will outlast that silly toothpick firestarter.
Great addition to the sak, but just too expensive, ! I'll wait till China starts cloning these,,,, Talk about pricing yourself out of the market,, ! Great presentation tho' ,,,
This is freaking amazing!!! I'll order a pack. Thanks for the demo.

I agree, I would find that much more useful than the toothpick!

The toothpick is perfect for cleaning out all the small spaces in your victorinox.
@@jamesfisher9594 actually i start to use a lot the toothpick when i was to the army..not time there to clean my teeth so the toothpick was necessary.

Yeah! I just figure I can always whittle myself a toothpick on the spot if I ever needed one so I'm good with replacing it.
@@WeAllJuggleKnives Exactly. Thanks for the good videos man.

Yeah I first seen these on Survival Russia he loves these little buggers. Awesome brother. 👊💀
Thanks for the video! I’ve been looking at this for a long time. It seems a little pricey but I think I need to pull the trigger on this.
I figure, since it is mainly a back-up or emergency item, the 8 pack should be enough for years, unless there are a lot of emergencies :]
YEAH my bra! I thought that they are to thin but if you take care you get a fire! Thanks
Great idea

I wonder how the patent works for this. Wouldn't Victorinox just make their own?
I have an urge to buy more victorinox swiss army knives
I often have that urge, I wish they would come out with some new models or bring back some oldies :]
