I think the car chase is an instant all timer. That was the action highlight for me. The camera work was very unique for a comic book movie and really put you in the moment.
Agreed. Some of the camera work mounted on the body panels was sublime. A little hectic, but that worked. It's a chase in the rain at night. Favourite shot was where the camera is focused on the rear 3/4 of the batmobile at speed, rain and background a blur of brown and gold. But he hits the boost and you just have the flame from the turbine in perfect focus. Straight out of a graphic novel.
I've always wanted to see a live action "worlds greatest detective" Batman and one who designed his gear, car and most of his gadgets...Pattison so far is the closest. Great movie.
I agree with pretty much everything said in this review except for the main theme being unimpressive. I thought it was every bit as iconic as Elfman's work. Just in a different way. It's repetitive. But so many of the main themes nowadays are. It has some genuine power and weight to it. It brings a more sinister heartbeat to Batman and it fits this take on the character so well.
@@KillerTacos54 Yeah, and not only that, but I absolutely love the subtle, atmospheric background music during the calmer detective and investigation scenes.
What I loved about the Batman himself in this movie, was that he showed emotion, he made mistakes, he wasn't some perfect robot. Also Batman uses doors and talks to people, instead of always appearing to places, like some super ultra ninja. More of this, please.
Really enjoyed this film for its aesthetic, mood, atmosphere and performances but I have to admit that the story and the character arcs were nothing special and didn't top the emotional highs of the Nolan trilogy. As Oliver said, there was nothing really innovative about the action either (although some of the fights were very impressive). Looking forward to seeing more in this series though and Pattinson is fantastic in the lead role.
@@jamesjameson4566 I'd agree with that - it's nice to have a detective-heavy Batman story, but the actual detective stuff doesn't feel very innovative, it's all recycled stuff from better detective movies just plonked into this film. Still a really good Batman film but I feel like people are getting carried away by calling it the best one ever etc.
@@gothamite27 yeah a good detective story has to have something in it where the audience, is saying whoah I didn't see that coming, and look how you got to that point. This was just nothing. Had that bit with the penguin saying something about wings, wow.. Not
Battinson was great, Farrell, Dano, Kravitz, Wright, Turturo all do a fantastic job, and in some moments the cinematography really captures something special and unique looking. I hope we get a sequel soon that brings in another villain that hasn't been seen in a long time, or ever. Mr. Freeze, Clayface, Poison Ivy, Hush, Huntress, Zsasz, lots of options. What I was *really* hoping for in The Batman was a tie-in to the Court of Owls, but I'll keep hoping
I don’t think teasing the Joker was a good shout. It felt a bit forced and his character for the brief 30 seconds we see him seemed a bit too much like the Riddler
I feel Clayface and Mr. Freeze may be a little too over the top for this grounded Batman universe. I think The Black Mask and Zasaz would work great. Court of Owls feels like a third movie type of enemy. Others like Deadshot and Deathstroke would be great and realistic, especially if hired by Black Mask to kill the Batman.
@@mbogucki1 Normally I’d agree about Freeze or Clayface fitting in, but at least you can have a Clayface that’s akin to Darkman with disguise ability and some extra strength as a result of his transformation. But we’ll see, I just don’t want them to jump to Joker, get another baddie in Arkham and then a third movie can be all of them teaming up against Batman
I always love it when I watch a review and what you (or others) say about the film is EXACTLY how I felt about it. Describing this film as a graphic novel translated to the big screen is how I've perceived it (and why I love it).
I never thought a Batman movie could be _too_ dark, aesthetically speaking, but at times I was honestly straining my eyes. I don’t think the running time was too long though, felt just right to me, but some more contrast and vibrance here and there would’ve been welcomed. Phenomenal movie overall.
I had the same experience - it was very hard to read some of the graffiti clues in some scenes, making it hard to follow parts of the story early on. Surely a slight increase in contrast wouldn't have drastically impacted the ambience the director was aiming for?
I literally just got back from it now. Was not going to watch it as I was done with the character and did not want to invest. But was told it had a good car chase and new Batmobile worth seeing. But I must say, this was VERY dark. I remember walking into the theater and seeing signs that said "Under 15 year olds not allowed and get your ID ready" I thought "How scary can it be?" And I must say, hats off to them for being dark. However, you can tell they were still going for a PG 13 as you never saw and of the horrifying damage to some of these people. Just minor hints of blood and that was it. Did it work? I guess. I liked it.
Love the review as always! Personally, I loved the main theme for Batman. It conveys how this lifestyle for him is more of a curse than something traditionally heroic. But to each their own ;)
The original Batman 1989 score? The main motif is ascending notes in the minor scale and then descending in the major scale- which is quiet genious because it captures Batmans dual personality(evil dark - then good and heroic)
I literally cannot find much if anything I did not love about this film. It was amazing. I cannot rank it above Batman Begins just yet but it's right next to it alongside the Dark Knight. All 3 are absolute masterpieces.
@@rosemaryfarell5264 You're not alone :) It's a superior Batman film in every way but one. If the Joker was not as good as he was it would be a no brainer.
@@rosemaryfarell5264 Ok, let me put it this way, I do not think that Batman Begins is a better movie than the Dark knight, but it's a better BATMAN movie, and it's my favorite comic book movie ever. And I believe it's a better movie than the Batman as well.
@@blackwaterproduction289 Batman Begins is a better movie all around if you ask me because it actually focuses on Bruce way more and is a damn interesting look into his psyche, and it still had plenty of stuff that embraces the more comic-booky elements of it. I think as Nolan went on with the series he made less Batman movies and more political thrillers that had Batman in it. And he clearly spent more time refining the villains than giving Bruce things to learn.
Intro scene with Gotham being established and the Bats intro was incredible. Loved that and loved the rain. But as the film progressed I felt like I was losing a lot of interest. It didn’t really do much story wise and whilst the concept is cool it doesn’t really take the Batman story to new heights. It was just fine. Nowhere near the best Batman movie.
Completely agree. That first 15 to 20 minutes was fantastic and then it just slogs along at a certain point. This film did not need to be almost 3 hours long! I still have hopes for the next one. I hope they will have a tighter and more focused story bringing the runtime in at 2h 10m or 2h 20m.
I thought it was "just fine," too. The first 2/3 of the movie was fine, but the last act felt like it wasn't part of the same movie. For being so long, I think it needed to do more, but not disaster movie more. The Riddler was an interesting character until I found out he was some rando on GothTube.
i felt like Paul Dano wasnt used enough and i didn't feel threatened by his actions. The style was a bit too dark and found myself squinting a lot while watching it trying to work out what was going on during the action scenes. I did like the direction of this Batman being an actual detective though, much different than before. I feel like i preferred The Nolan Trilogy though.
I saw it a few weeks ago. I really liked it. It's an almost perfect blend of noire-grittiness and the Gotham from the comics, the cinematography, score, camera angles, and directing are all as high in quality as you can get, everybody gave the role of a lifetime (Pattinson is arguably the best live-action Batman alongside Kilmer if you ask me), and I love how the whole movie was basically telling Bruce to get over himself and actually become a symbol of hope and positive inspiration to the city instead of sulking around and letting his anger and rage consume him. Pattinson's Batman is the first Batman since Kilmer's whom I can really imagine actually doing something exactly like what Conroy's Batman does to people he know needs help. Kravitz is also the definitive cinematic Catwoman if you ask me. Also, oh my God, thank the heavens he's back to driving a car, and a really good looking one at that instead of all these tanks! I'm just hoping they get a bit more crazy and realize they need to maybe give us a pause with the absolute down-to-earth Batman and having all the villains being this specific type of psycho. Give me Robin, Mr. Freeze, Clayface, Black Mask, Killer Croc, Hugo Strange, Firefly, Gentlemen Ghost, Scarecrow, Manbat, Mad Hatter, or Poison Ivy in the future!
Definitely a great take on the character. Is it the best? It has a chance to be. I believe personally the next one should be the best of all time. Hopefully Reeves and company learn from their mistakes from this one and come back even stronger.
Do you really think Barry Keoghan's generation Z Joker will even hold a candle to the legendary performance by Heath Ledger? Come on now. Let's be real.
I thought the film was way too long, a bit meandering and the final 'flood' riddle / the Riddler's 'followers' came from nowhere. I enjoyed it for the first two acts, but it definitely out stayed its welcome and it won't be on my repeat viewing list.
It didn't come out nowhere. If you take a close look at the Riddler's live streaming during DA murder, they were talking about some kind of attack on election day in comment section. There was a paper cutting of Gotham having problem with sea dam or whatever that called in Riddler's room. Riddler talks about cleaning the city and removing the dust. He wants to rebuild the city from ground up.
Nice job with the review Oliver. I was one the fence about it and I saw it and I loved it. A very impressive incredible feat for Matt Reeves and company.
I didn't care for the chemistry between Bats and Catwoman in this movie, at all. I thought the romance aspect was clunky and not well formed whatsoever. Also thought the movie dragged quite a bit, and this is coming from someone who can sit down and watch all 3 extended versions of Lord of the Rings in one day. Otherwise, aside from some minor stuff, it was excellent. Still doesn't beat Nolans films for me though.
This 'The Batman' is one of the few modern movies I'm willing to see more than once. 1. Robert Pattison made the role his own and nailed it. 2. Colin Farrell was a pleasantly surprising B-plot antagonist, in his sort-of-peculiar way of portrayal. 3. Zoe Kravitz was luckily not turned into some woke-culture-infested bitch, but kept a very realistic, relatable tone to her character. 4. Paul Dano's portrayal of his character was a fascinating, well thought through and acted out subversion to (probably vast % of audiences') expectations. 5. The rest of the cast did not get enough screen time (IMHO) to really shine / stand out, but did a very good job of keeping up with the tone / atmosphere / mood / spirit of the movie The story itself isn't the best or most innovative in the world, but the script seems very polished & thanks to the director a the crew, it comes out very welcome, in its result. Thumbs up for the movie - and for this review.
It was a good Batman film. Originally my Dad and I thought we should watch it separately since it went 2 hours and 53 minutes. But as the film went on and on my Dad couldn't wait on the next part of the story. So we went all through the end. What convinced me that this proves this is great Batman film was the fact My Dad was not a big fan of Comic book films most he was ok but it was not his cup of tea. The fact it got his attention till the end for me shows it is great. He does like some superhero films like Iron Man but not Infinity War but me I liked them all.
I annot wait to see this film. It does have something of a Batman Begins vibe to me, but I'm okay with that., as Batman Begins" is my favorite solo Batman film. I don't think that we should ever get another Batman origin film, because Batman Begins told Bruce's origin so wel that we don''t need to have the origin plated again. Batman Begins was dark, but not dismal. It had moments of levity that worked within that film. What made that movie work for me is that while it took a serious approach to Batman and his world, it was also FUN. My favorite movie of all time is the first Tobey Mcquire Spider-man film as it was a great origin film that made Peter the focus and not the Green Goblin and told a great coming of age story. Sure, Peter could brood, but the movie never forgot we were meant to have fun. Batman Begins was a lot like that. It told Buce's origin in a great coming of age type way. and it also let the audience have fun while telling a serious story. But enough about the best Batman movie ever made. I like this approach. It seems to me that this is the closest we will be getting to the see the Bronze Age Batman on the big screen. The Batman of the seventies and early eighties was a detective and yes, back then, he was operating out of Wayne Tower. I also like the costume, the action scenes and the voice that Pattison's Batman has. But I don't think that this will be a fun movie. But that's okay. Not all movies can do that. I would like for it to have a hopeful tone, though and not have an entirely cynical or nihilistic view of the world. I also like Catwoman's outfit. I love the set pieces. Not sure about this approach to the Riddler, though. If it were me, I would write him a s darker take on the Frank Gorshin version of the Riddler. He'd be this excited and manic criminal and leave clues, but would only murder if he felt it was needed. He wouldn't be a serial killer per se. That's the Joker's realm.
Fantastic video and review! Like you, as a lifelong Batman fan, I was going to see it regardless and knew I'd probably enjoy it, but I was completely blown away by how fantastic it was and am still reeling. Can't wait to go see it again! Loved the fact that it was styled as a detective style comic movie, and not necessarily a spectacular superhero style comic movie (though I have no problem with that approach either).
The only real flaw in the movie is that the thing about the sea walls came out of nowhere. I think they could have worked them into the first act somehow to highlight that flooding is a thing that can and does happen in Gotham.
people are only propping it up to spite the previous iteration of the character, which is a damn shame in my opinion. the movie itself is good and very well made, but way too overinflated for what it is: a rehash of better films. we were already moving forward with Batfleck's interpretation and now we've regressed to seeing Batman in his early years yet again (yay!)
GREAT REVIEW but strongly disagree on your opinion on the MAIN THEME, not only I think is amazing, is probably the only theme in film to this day that could go toe to toe with the 89 Theme of danny elfman of all other films with Batman themes in it.
I wouldn't put it up there with the Christopher Nolan films (well, the first two), but it was a good film nonetheless. Probably similar in quality to 2019's Joker I'd say
Wow mate you got to interview so many big names including the actual directors and stars. You're style of movie review is not just the future it's the present. You are now literally one of the biggest movie reviewers in the world mate:) well done
I was born January 1st 1989 . My first experience with Batman in a movie theatre was batman begins when I was 16. I did like the Tim burton movies especially Batman returns , I haven’t seen the Joel Schumacher films yet but I have seen the Nolan trilogy I don’t think I’ve seen a “bad” Batman movie yet to be honest , really liked this new one as well.
Unpopular opinion: I didn’t have any problem with the run time. I was entertained and committed the entire time. Also I think the theme is all sorts of iconic. I got goosebumps. Easily the best Batman film for me!
@@greatdelusion7654 all of the Riddler’s riddles. Or just cut out the Riddler. The catwoman was great and the penguin was underutilized. The riddler made the story drag for me.
^ This. Once that comparison pops in your head, you cant not hear it. And given the film plays it about 50 times throughout its runtime - it stopped being funny fast.
Just rewatched it, and this is my favorite Batman after Conroy’s. I’m a 90’s kid. Keaton was my first Batman, and Conroy was my second, grew up loving both. When I saw The Dark Knight in theaters, I thought, “THIS is it. THIS is Batman!” I’ve grown to believe that Chris Nolan was more than a little embarrassed about making superhero movies. At the very least, he was apologetic about doing so, in doing so. The Dark Knight is a *morose*-ass movie. The Batman’s dark, it can be depressing (hell, Bruce looks like he’s on the verge of…well, ya know), but it never forgets that it’s a comic book movie. It still *fun*. And the set-pieces, those things that are supposed to amuse and excite? They’re amusing and exciting.
I LOVED the score! That Batman theme stands with Elfman's & Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard's. As for Pattinson himself, I really enjoyed his performance as the Caped Crusader. Whenever he emerges from the shadows, it's so arresting! Also, the fights were great, with the Iceberg Lounge fight being the best. My favorite scene was when Colson & Batman had to solve the riddles or Colson dies. As for ranking Batman movies, I rank them as such: The Dark Knight The Batman The Dark Knight Rises Batman Begins Batman Returns Batman (1989) Batman (1966) Batman Forever Batman & Robin
Great visuals. Bad soundtrack. Juvenile writing. Mixed performances. Overlong and uninteresting. Batman hitting the bridge in his squirrel suit was funny though.
"You wont be disappointed" - I was! Not a subscriber to this channel yet as pretty much just came across it but why I will is this has the most sensical comment section I've seen yet. Fair play that people can not like this movie and not get shot down for it!
It's because all the RUclipsrs have overhyped this movie. The sheep just want to ride the trend. In a few months when the milking/honeymoon phase is over, people will begin taking the red pill.
@@RS-kt6bo Sure they will. Guy with a Ledger Joker profile pic. TDK was milked more than the average cow for years. You are still milking it. Why can't they just like the film? Why is it some big conspiracy that a lot of fans like this movie? Is it because some like it more than the Nolan films? Is that what this is about? I see you on the comments section of numerous videos about The Batman saying the same thing. I am not a sheep. Batman's theme was conveyed what it set out to. It was heavy like his footsteps, it gave off a sort of sense of dread that criminals would have in his presence.
Now, there have been a lot of Batman films over the years. This one is one of the best. Sure, it might too early to say if it’s better than stuff like Batman (1989) or The Dark Knight, but it’s definitely on the same level as them. Plus, Robert Pattinson KILLED it as Batman. Here’s to hoping we see more!
By same level, what do you mean? The Nolan trilogy has a lot of moments in it whereas this one doesn’t. It worked as a good comic book accurate early Batman movie but would you really wanna rewatch this movie again and again and again? I don’t think I can say yes…

I have mixed feelings on this movie. On the plus side, I really liked the aesthetics, the mood, the cinematography, the supporting characters and the action sequences. What I didn't like so much are (SPOILERS): - the cowl: the horns/ears look very weird and distracting for me. - the main theme song: I feel it boring, uninspiring, too depressing (not dark). - the story: It follows a detective story which I generally like (I love Seven), but it doesn't feel as if batman were really discovering stuff on his own, he is only really following what the riddler is showing him. - the batman character: I understand it's his early days and he is not at his prime yet fighting-wise, detective-wise, outsmarting everyone, with the best gadgets. But usually when someone will eventually become the best at something (the world's greatest detective) you have to show you have raw talent that you will eventually develop, which I don't see this batman showing, as he is only following almost-explicitly laid out clues from beginning to end. It would've been awesome to see growth on him and at the end outsmarting a bit of the riddler and stopping 4 out of 7 bombs so that there is some flooding and he still has to rescue people, or saving the mayor from getting shot and still fighting the goons. I didn't see a great character arc in this film, there is a small thing regarding him not being vengeance anymore but that doesn't do it for me because it's not felt. I don't usually complain about long movies (I love LOTR, the Godfather, all of Nolan's movies) but I could feel time passing on this one, for the previous things mentioned. For me the Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are still the greatest showcasings of Batman to date
Thought is was boring. Didn't draw me in at all. Didn't have any emotional attachment to the characters. Catwoman was poor especially some of the comments she made. Some woke rubbish made it into the film. Didn't like Alfred. Wanted to see batman kick more ass like he did at the beginning. Sorry not for me. Joker film was much better imo.
Have to say that I don't agree on the score assessment. I would say it's quite memorable and probably the closest to that gothic and bombastic sound from the animated series and the other themes of Elfman and Walker used on that show. Kind of like, what if the phantom of the opera were writing a superhero theme. It's dark and gothic but also rousing and inspiring action. It announces his presence, I mean when they use it in the trailer as he's walking to the penguin, sillhouetted by flames...fantastic!
Oliver idk how many times you’ve seen the film but I just got home from my 2nd viewing and It sat with me much better the second time. I get to really soak in the score and the cinematography and I found it more enjoyable. I would love to hear follow up thoughts if you do see it again.
I thought The Batman was alright, but it lacks the "fun" factor of the Bale/Nolan trilogy, and those movies were thought of dark 10-15 years ago, but they look almost lighthearted compared to this movie. For personal nostalgic reasons, I also prefer the gothic, fairy tale atmosphere of the Michael Keaton/Tim Burton movies. This movie was good enough, but it was way too fucking long. People who say "it didn't feel like 3 hours" are smoking crack in my opinion. It totally felt like 3 hours, even 4 hours. I shouldn't be checking my watch in a Batman movie. I also hate when modern movies have a club scene in it too look hip and cool, it feels pretentious. Robert Pattinson is current Batman, and usually what's current is cool and "the best ever!", but he's OK. He's a bit too skinny, and I don't know, I wish there was at least one or two funny moments in there to appreciate. Both the Burton movies and the Nolan movies, as dark as they were had at least one funny moment. This was just a dark, dreary, somber movie. No way I'm taking a kid under 10 or 11 to see this movie.
Why is everyone loving this so much? First hour is promising but it devolves and becomes a slog. Pattinson is good, but his Wayne scenes, in particular the hospital scene with Alfred feels unnatural and a bit sulky. Whoever reigned in Turturro, Serkis and Dano needs an award because they could have easily ruined the movie by chewing scenery and going over the top as in some of their other roles. To me the strength comes mainly from the villains performance and threat, to that I think it was an epic fail. What started as an amazing and uncomfortable reveal became an absolute nothing and for someone to be claiming that it is an interesting “detective” story…. I don’t get that at all. Apart from 2 minutes of him rewatching his captured video and using his device to flip the image, the actual deductions and pathways are more happen chance than actual or genuine detective work or intuition, the fact that the Riddler isn’t captured but really and simply gives up highlights this. The action set pieces are few and far between and barely memorable at all. Of the few notable choices, Farrell’s makeup…. Hand them the Oscar now, incredible. My other highlight, that other filmmakers need to take note of, Catwoman was easily despatched by Batman, yes it’s true, a 100 pound woman will never present a threat to a 250 pound man in hand to hand combat, bravo to whomever made that decision. All in all, a must see for fans, but for the casual viewer it is way too long, not good at all for kids and I have genuinely no interest in rewatching any time soon. It is a movie made almost exclusively to get me to watch the sequel or the TV spin-off. Good job in creating an ok film in 2021/22 because they are so few and far between.
I always wonder how does Oliver find clips from movies that have just come out which arent in the trailers or in any press kits when doing these reviews.
I genuinely believe that of all the Batman films, the only ones that "get" who Batman are through and through were Mask of the Phantasm and Lego Batman. My problem with many live-action adaptations is that, even if I like them for what they are, the vast majority of them are less showing what the ultimate spirit of Batman is like from his source material, and more directors using it as a canvas to do their own thing and circulate their own ideas with the characters. Not to say I don't like them as movies, I very much do like them as their own works. Sure, Burton films have Batman killing, Catwoman reimagined as a crazy embodiment of some of his fetishes, and turned the Penguin into a Biblical murdering type figure, but they are still awesome, even if Returns is fairly uneven. Schumacher's films are over the top and very goofy, but they do a bit better of a job at giving Batman genuine arcs and capturing how eccentric and vibrant the more campy elements are, even if a lot of the best parts of Forever were cut from the film and Batman & Robin is more a film to get high to. The Nolan films to me were political thrillers that HAPPENED to have Batman in them, but I did enjoy them as Nolan films, even if I think Batman Begins was the best one, I found The Dark Knight to fall apart in the last third, and Rises was just a mess in the bad kind of way. And BvS was...interesting at points but mostly a miss. I haven't seen the film yet due to the risk of the Omicron subvariant, but I sure as hell want to check this out since I am hearing we have a live-action Batman film that is a great blend of a director and writer's unique vision and capturing who Batman is like. I certainly have been having problems with how ever since the Schumacher films have ended Batman has been getting increasingly dark to the point he's becoming the worst type of gritty. I didn't care for the Bush-Administration style apologetic themes in the post-Batman Begins Nolan films (justification for unwarranted surveillance and vilification of Occupy Wall Street), and how Snyder made Batman into a brooding violent psycho who is still justified in all his murder because of what happened to him as a kid. I have wanted a live-action Batman film that captures who Bruce is and what he represents and teaches us. I've been hopeful for the movie ever since Birds of Prey came out really, and that's not just my favorite DCEU film, I think it captured what the energy and spirit of Gotham and its characters are in a way other DC films just don't do for me.
I agree with you! In fact I saved your comment and I'll quote it when I'll create a video about the Batman movies! As far as I am concerned my favorite live action Batman movies are the ones from Burton but the absolute best movie ever about Batman is "Mask Of The Phantasm", an absolute gem of perfection. Side note about the Omicron variant. Better safe than sorry! You're doin' the right thing! The pandemic isn't over at all there are still people in the hospitals and people that are dyin'. Maybe you'll be lucky and you'll catch a light Covid but you still will be a weapon of infection! So, as said, better safe than sorry! The war still rages on! Stay safe and keep ignorin' everybody who's treatin' you like a modern day Cassandra!
@@jetskimaestro3185 The potential of a new strain of virus waits for no man. Better a pussy than careless considering how Omicron lead to highest surge in cases just a few weeks ago.
I just arrived home from the movie theater after watching The Batman, so I’m still on a bit of high from the experience. In my opinion this is the best incarnation of Batman since… I don’t know when. A long time! I never enjoyed Bale and Affleck’s interpretations that much, but Pattinson knocked it out of the park! The visuals, the atmosphere, the music - I loved everything about it. Runtime was a bit long though
I will admit I was skeptical of Robert Patterson till I saw him in The King, then I was sold. The movie was really good, the Riddler was really good and I loved the craziness of him.
Why is everyone, including this guy, so obsessed with Batman begins!? It really isn’t a very good film. Terribly overwritten and cackhanded, incredibly cheesy dialogue, a constantly over explained plot and full of self indulgent, sentimental acting.
I hope there will be someone who recuts the previous "in search of" documentaries, because as they are now, it's just a clip collection of movies, shortly commented on, with some interesting themes injected. For all the hard work that went in it, it is just messy to watch
Did it bother anyone that he carries around his costume in a backpack? It annoyed me. Nobody has really mentioned this so I assume I’m most definitely in the minority on this one. But just curious about you guys here in the comments. Did this aspect bother you guys or no?
boring many times/stale/too long and slow movie...to batman doing dumb things, to the riddler being wanna be seven and zodiac/the gimp from pulp fiction, the movie trying hard to be seven and zodiac and the gotham show combined, the batmobile being something from fast and furious....playing of the same damm music so many times and repetitive bland one note literally movie, one tone
Batman Begins & TDK are far superior films. I went in wanting to love the movie but ended up barely liking it. The movie has some major flaws that I can't just look past. I've been a huge Batman fan since 1984 and he'll be my favorite character for the rest of my years. But I cannot ignore the blatant overhype by RUclipsrs and the internet.
I agree with you. The Dark Knight has a lot of “magic” in it, idk how to explain it but would you rather re watch the Batman or the dark knight if given a choice before dying? I would say TDK… the Nolan trilogy may be overhyped but so is this new Batman movie. I just prefer Nolan’s take better, even if the detective side was lacking and the movie seemed “too realistic”. I love both takes on the Batman because Pattinson is fantastic make no mistake. I just think the end was lackluster and many scenes were drawn out. In summary, I really do think Matt Reeves can build off this movie and make a better movie. I slightly put Begins over this movie but TDK still reigns supreme. Just MY opinion!!!
@@Davis84396 Batman didn't save any victims or even catch the Riddler. How is he portrayed as the greatest detective if he doesn't even solve a crime? His wingsuit was completely unnecessary and stupid instead of the iconic cape. The Riddler targeted corrupt patrons of the city, only to drop all that build up and attack the whole city, including innocent civilians. That goes against his established philosophy throughout the movie. All that build up and literally no payoff. Catwoman is way too tiny and looks like a 14 year old girl. She's physically growing because it's only year two? 🤣 Atleast she knows what "Privaledged White men" are all about though lol. That part was a treat. I'm not even White and I can see the woke BS. Batman stood out in broad daylight for the entire city to see while airlifting people, losing the weapon that he uses the most forever. His mythical status as being a creature that resides in the dark. But now everyone can see it's just a guy in a suit. A beacon of hope is Superman's character trait. The loud, thumping footsteps of the combat boots looks cool and all but doesn't that literally go against what the character is trying to accomplish? He's always been stealthy like a ninja. In fact the more I think about it, the more flaws I can find.
@@SolidPain6624 Good man. I've watched Batman Begins and TDK at least fifty times each. But I don't have any desire to see this snoozefest ever again. It saddens me to say this and I take no pleasure in talking this way about my favorite character of all time.
@@RS-kt6bo in the same boat, I think “The Batman” is a good movie but the Nolan trilogy inspires me every day, till this very day. It hits the heart differently. But again, It’s just my opinion. Call it nostalgia, call it whatever but that’s my take on it. And yes, I do understand that Bale’s voice sucks lol and sometimes he looks goofy, But that doesn’t ruin the movies.
Love the review, Oliver. Saw the film a day after it’s worldwide release. Robert Pattinson is magnificent as The caped Crusader. The story, action and direction from Matt Reeves is top notch. Zoe Kravitz is Sexy as Catwoman. Colin Farrell as the Penguin was brilliant also, you could barely tell it’s him playing the character. Like you and everyone else I am a fan of Batman and was excited for the films release.
Zoē Kravitz was the wrong choice to play Selina Kyle, as she is too urban. She would have been better suited to play Patience Phillips (previously played to slinky purr-fection by Halle Berry) or a black villain or black heroine. Selina Kyle is a white character, and with few exceptions, black people should not usurp characters who were written as white. They should stick to playing either established black characters, or new ones created for them. I shall watch The Batman when it flies to HBO Max.

I think the car chase is an instant all timer.
That was the action highlight for me. The camera work was very unique for a comic book movie and really put you in the moment.
It was a mess.
The photography was like a horror movie. And the car chase wasn't heroic; it was a monster chase, with Batman as a monster.
That was no bat mobile..looked like something out of mad max

I've always wanted to see a live action "worlds greatest detective" Batman and one who designed his gear, car and most of his gadgets...Pattison so far is the closest. Great movie.
One gadget…
It wasn't a good detective story, it had no weight, noting to it
Batman begins is still the best for me but I really liked this 👍👍
I agree with pretty much everything said in this review except for the main theme being unimpressive. I thought it was every bit as iconic as Elfman's work. Just in a different way. It's repetitive. But so many of the main themes nowadays are. It has some genuine power and weight to it. It brings a more sinister heartbeat to Batman and it fits this take on the character so well.
💯
I loved how repetitive it was. I literally can’t stop humming it in my head
@@KillerTacos54
Yeah, and not only that, but I absolutely love the subtle, atmospheric background music during the calmer detective and investigation scenes.
Loved how it felt like a horror score
What is there to like about weak depressed emo Batman getting punched out several times?
What I loved about the Batman himself in this movie, was that he showed emotion, he made mistakes, he wasn't some perfect robot. Also Batman uses doors and talks to people, instead of always appearing to places, like some super ultra ninja.
More of this, please.
that's because he is a super-hero. It has nothing to do with reality- it is FANTASY
The Batman does a good job documenting Batman's *brooding* and *tumultuous* puberty. It Smells Like Teen Spirit.
But then he was perfect in solving the Riddler's letters, like he had the correct answers written on the back of his hand.
@Kane Gayl uhm, i think more to make it believeable, not necessarily realistic. I mean Star Wars is pure fantasy but still it is somehow believeable
@@rgerber that's Debateable
Love this version. The look was awesome. They need to continue these series.
Good helpful review - thanks ! 👍
Yeah it was so lightweight in terms of detective story. Nothing special
Not
The Batman is great despite a few issues with it. I still think The Dark Knight and Batman '89 are better but this isn't too bad.
I really want to see Bane, Scarecrow, Mr Freeze or Court of Owls

I agree , I’m hoping that it was just because of the cinema I was watching it at and that when it’s released for streaming it’ll be Much better
I had the same experience - it was very hard to read some of the graffiti clues in some scenes, making it hard to follow parts of the story early on. Surely a slight increase in contrast wouldn't have drastically impacted the ambience the director was aiming for?
That's definitely an issue with the way your theatre projected it, not the film itself.
Your theaters projector was bad I saw it in IMAX twice and it blew me away best looking g film ever IMO

But to each their own ;)
It felt like a horror score and I loved 🥰
The original Batman 1989 score?
The main motif is ascending notes in the minor scale and then descending in the major scale- which is quiet genious because it captures Batmans dual personality(evil dark - then good and heroic)
I literally cannot find much if anything I did not love about this film. It was amazing. I cannot rank it above Batman Begins just yet but it's right next to it alongside the Dark Knight. All 3 are absolute masterpieces.
The Wire has a way better take on the detective genre. This was weak emo Batman being a poor detective, not stopping bombs flooding the city…
Wow someone other than me loves Batman Begins more than TDK.
@@rosemaryfarell5264 You're not alone :) It's a superior Batman film in every way but one. If the Joker was not as good as he was it would be a no brainer.

Sadly, I agree. It’s not a bad movie, by any stretch. I just found myself kinda bored in parts. And I LOVE Batman.
Slow and boring, I couldnt finish it. People raving about how great it is are laughable to me but whatever floats their boat.
I thought it was "just fine," too. The first 2/3 of the movie was fine, but the last act felt like it wasn't part of the same movie. For being so long, I think it needed to do more, but not disaster movie more. The Riddler was an interesting character until I found out he was some rando on GothTube.
Definitely the best Batman imo. I can imagine a sequel where Mr. Freeze is a psycho that sprays his victims with liquid nitrogen 🥶🥶
Can you give us a meteor man or blankman review!!!!! 😭

i felt like Paul Dano wasnt used enough and i didn't feel threatened by his actions. The style was a bit too dark and found myself squinting a lot while watching it trying to work out what was going on during the action scenes. I did like the direction of this Batman being an actual detective though, much different than before. I feel like i preferred The Nolan Trilogy though.
Batman is dark
@@fatherlucid4995 still not necessary to be so dark in a visual sense, so dark you can't tell whats going on.
Looking forward to seeing it once it hits streaming.

Hi Mike.
How come with this Gotham having such bad rainy weather , does The Penquin forego having an umbrella?!
5. The rest of the cast did not get enough screen time (IMHO) to really shine / stand out, but did a very good job of keeping up with the tone / atmosphere / mood / spirit of the movie
The story itself isn't the best or most innovative in the world, but the script seems very polished & thanks to the director a the crew, it comes out very welcome, in its result.
“Didn’t think much to the main score” proceeds to use throughout the review 😂 but good review, this film has grown on me since seeing it release week
The only real flaw in the movie is that the thing about the sea walls came out of nowhere. I think they could have worked them into the first act somehow to highlight that flooding is a thing that can and does happen in Gotham.
This is the most boring Batman ever.
An endless, pointless, retread of things we've already seen in better films. Hated it.
people are only propping it up to spite the previous iteration of the character, which is a damn shame in my opinion. the movie itself is good and very well made, but way too overinflated for what it is: a rehash of better films. we were already moving forward with Batfleck's interpretation and now we've regressed to seeing Batman in his early years yet again (yay!)
GREAT REVIEW but strongly disagree on your opinion on the MAIN THEME, not only I think is amazing, is probably the only theme in film to this day that could go toe to toe with the 89 Theme of danny elfman of all other films with Batman themes in it.
Yeah, and also some praise for the background music during some of the calmer moment…such atmosphere!
I think this is the best you’re gonna get out of a live action Batman. My favourite.
I loved this movie. This is indeed one of my top 5 favorite Batman films.
The Dark Knight has NOT been dethroned.
I wouldn't put it up there with the Christopher Nolan films (well, the first two), but it was a good film nonetheless. Probably similar in quality to 2019's Joker I'd say

The Batman is a emo depressing movie. Didn’t like it. Worst Batman ever.
As for ranking Batman movies, I rank them as such:
The Dark Knight
The Batman
The Dark Knight Rises
Batman Begins
Batman Returns
Batman (1989)
Batman (1966)
Batman Forever
Batman & Robin

Batman's theme was conveyed what it set out to. It was heavy like his footsteps, it gave off a sort of sense of dread that criminals would have in his presence.
I’m sorry but it’s a very lazy theme. Sure it still has a nice atmosphere but there’s nothing much to it. Compare it to Elfman or Zimmer. C’mon man!
my only complaint is the lack of climax from a big riddler plot twist or plan of action.

I have mixed feelings on this movie. On the plus side, I really liked the aesthetics, the mood, the cinematography, the supporting characters and the action sequences. What I didn't like so much are (SPOILERS):
- the cowl: the horns/ears look very weird and distracting for me.
Depressed Emo Batman not saving the city from bombs flooding Gotham…
Thought is was boring. Didn't draw me in at all. Didn't have any emotional attachment to the characters. Catwoman was poor especially some of the comments she made. Some woke rubbish made it into the film. Didn't like Alfred. Wanted to see batman kick more ass like he did at the beginning. Sorry not for me. Joker film was much better imo.
My sentiments exactly. I couldn't even finish the movie and the racial stuff ruined it for me.
the Batcave reminds me of the subway level in Arkham City
Have to say that I don't agree on the score assessment. I would say it's quite memorable and probably the closest to that gothic and bombastic sound from the animated series and the other themes of Elfman and Walker used on that show. Kind of like, what if the phantom of the opera were writing a superhero theme. It's dark and gothic but also rousing and inspiring action. It announces his presence, I mean when they use it in the trailer as he's walking to the penguin, sillhouetted by flames...fantastic!
It was great can't wait for part two and the two TV shows that are coming
batman 1989 and 1992 and 1995 and 1997 and 2005 and 2008 and 2012 is better than batman 2022
elements of it work and some don't. Nolan still holds the title
Totally agree with you.
Nolan still holds the title…for the most overrated movie of all time, yes!
90% didn’t work for flimsy emo “detective” bat man.
*Burton.
@@greatdelusion7654 agreed. It wasn't bad though, but Burton was better.
Oliver idk how many times you’ve seen the film but I just got home from my 2nd viewing and It sat with me much better the second time. I get to really soak in the score and the cinematography and I found it more enjoyable. I would love to hear follow up thoughts if you do see it again.
Great review! Bang on with everything you said.
Nice review. Love the film. Seen it twice already.
Best review iv seen on The Batman so far, great stuff!
Oliver, are you going to do a retrospective on Top Gun?
Another great video Oliver keep up the good work.
Great review! This was easily my favourite Batman film and interpretation of all time. Absolutely spectacular
I always wonder how does Oliver find clips from movies that have just come out which arent in the trailers or in any press kits when doing these reviews.
Even with the length of the movie i'll happilly watch it a couple of times more
Hey Oliver, can you talk about the Lois and Clark show from the 90s in a retrospective?
I like your reviews and watch almost all your videos but you hate on a lot of soundtracks that are really good. The Batman score is fantastic!
If you’re scared of Omicron at this point then you’re a straight up p***y. Good god, it’s 2022 lol
It’s WAY to long. Little Too emo. Still good though. Loved The Car Chase.
Thanks Oliver, great review. Have to respectfully disagree with you about the score though, which I absolutely loved :)
Why is everyone, including this guy, so obsessed with Batman begins!? It really isn’t a very good film. Terribly overwritten and cackhanded, incredibly cheesy dialogue, a constantly over explained plot and full of self indulgent, sentimental acting.
the only reason people like it is because it wasn't Batman & Robin 2.
I hope there will be someone who recuts the previous "in search of" documentaries, because as they are now, it's just a clip collection of movies, shortly commented on, with some interesting themes injected. For all the hard work that went in it, it is just messy to watch
If Batman didnt exist, the plot wouldnt change one bit.
Did it bother anyone that he carries around his costume in a backpack? It annoyed me. Nobody has really mentioned this so I assume I’m most definitely in the minority on this one. But just curious about you guys here in the comments. Did this aspect bother you guys or no?
i liked how he got changed so quickly and without being noticed at the funeral scene, rubbish writing that gets overlooked lol
boring many times/stale/too long and slow movie...to batman doing dumb things, to the riddler being wanna be seven and zodiac/the gimp from pulp fiction, the movie trying hard to be seven and zodiac and the gotham show combined, the batmobile being something from fast and furious....playing of the same damm music so many times and repetitive bland one note literally movie, one tone
Great film. Definately picking up the ''4-K Ultra'' blu-ray this summer.
What major flaws does the film have?
This movie should have been set in the early 90's to give a more depressing backdrop.
More depressing than the last five years?
Love the review, Oliver. Saw the film a day after it’s worldwide release. Robert Pattinson is magnificent as The caped Crusader. The story, action and direction from Matt Reeves is top notch. Zoe Kravitz is Sexy as Catwoman. Colin Farrell as the Penguin was brilliant also, you could barely tell it’s him playing the character. Like you and everyone else I am a fan of Batman and was excited for the films release.
I wonder if this would have been better suited as a Netflix's TV show like daredevil
Description: "Non-spoiler review"
Me: "Ok, I'll watch it..."
Oliver: "The film opens with-"
Me: "Nope!" *pauses vid, leaves this comment*
Zoē Kravitz was the wrong choice to play Selina Kyle, as she is too urban. She would have been better suited to play Patience Phillips (previously played to slinky purr-fection by Halle Berry) or a black villain or black heroine. Selina Kyle is a white character, and with few exceptions, black people should not usurp characters who were written as white. They should stick to playing either established black characters, or new ones created for them. I shall watch The Batman when it flies to HBO Max.
Shes a moron in real life too. Terrible actress.
