I think it would be interesting to know who authorized residential home construction on top of gravesites in the first place.
A greedy person, probably.
city/state politicians/government and the wicked men in business. No respect for the dead or their families. Not even relocating the dead to an active cemetery. Its cheaper just to build on top of them. What great, hard working men these are. What great parents to raise such men with respect, humanity and integrity w/fear of god in them. If we are not sinners then definitely we are sinners of omission.
A local politician years ago got a duffle bag of $20’s and some surveyors got a lil something on the back end😂. Definitely worthy of local news doing a deep dive!
I have heard of that happening before, the construction company just removes the head stones. If you remember the movie Poltergeist, it's about that very thing.
Or so near a railroad track, which was probably there first.

There are a lot of buildings being built on top of graves it's been happening for decades
Because the builder paid off the officials. It's called greasing the palm. Here's what the same officials are going to do. They're going to pay the property owners under public domain for their property, relocate the deceased, and they got their project settled. They do not care about you or anyone else. Bawling about it gets you nothing. Sad that you're just now discovering that public officials are crooked. Learned all that as a teenager and you're about my age.
A couple decades it's already a long time.. nobody even visits them anymore anyways

It's hard when you purposely live your life honestly and when you go out and tell people the truth they not only accuse you of being a liar, but refuse to listen to anything you have to say.
You can't help but think "what was the point of me living my life honestly If people are never going to believe me?"
I understand his tears, I'm going through the same very thing, every single friend and acquaintance believed the lies and I'm left with NO ONE who will even try to see the truth.
Not really compassionate. They keep quiet when they think it will mess up their yard, but as soon as public works are involved, all of a sudden they can't stop talking about it, and playing the victim.

Never underestimate the lengths a money hungry pig will go to get what they want. Including stomping on your grave.
Before going off half-cocked when you don't know all the facts, keep in mind that whoever developed the land may not even have been aware of the graves, for a number of reasons. Doing a bit of research, Lawndale lies about 33 deg 54 min N and so in the 1940's and 1950's it straddled 2 different topographic maps (Inglewood and Torrance) I reviewed the available top maps from 1942 to 1952 and did not see anything indicating a cemetery at the time, so while one was obviously there at one time, it obviously wasn't well known even at that time. Lawndale after WWII had some aircraft factories and related airfield built on it as it was still relatively cheap land at that time but much of the space was still either oilfields used for agriculture. The 1950's demand for housing would have led to large tract developments, top maps at the time show 50-75 feet in elevation variation so it's likely that low spots would have been filled in quite easily. Even the deceased's family insist he was eventually buried in Culver City albeit with a private headstone instead of the standard GI issue marker slab that is prevalent in military cemeteries. Most likely this was not intentional, it may have been a small cemetery with most of the graves relocated before the cemetery was decommissioned, there's always a chance that a few may have been forgotten.
@@eastbaykidd8574 I reviewed the topo map from 1951 and it's clear that the neighborhood streets had already been constructed by then but not yet built up with no evidence of a cemetery on that site. Methinks that this is just a pile of unused headstones that somehow came to be discarded next to the railroad tracks.

Honesty, if the correct people find out than it can cause major headaches for the property owners and their neighbors. They might have the legal right to dig and search anywhere they want as long as it can be justified so that can be tearing up yards, removing trees, and demolishing homes without the requirement to fix the mess they made.

I'd like to know Earle Hoffman's story. He survived WWII but dies about six years later at aged 25.
There must be relatives out there who can help explain why there are graves there. It's almost as if a cemetery went bust, bankrupt, and a real estate developer just built over the graves rather than have them moved.

brain tumor - his death certificate is a public record and shows he was buried 9 miles to the north in Culver City's Hillside Cemetery.

Neither one of us were there, so we don't know how they treated him. But he was obviously very, very upset.

All of us who had family members serve in WWII and especially those who lost loved ones should stand with these people. Those graves are sacred. They should not he disturbed!
I think he should clean off all the headstones and let people visit them. I'm sure as soon as they put out all the names some relatives might come forward. They Graves should not be moved.

Putting on my amateur genealogist hat. According to the 1930 census, Earle Hoffman was living in Monterey Park with his parents Herman and Adele and his infant sister Norma. Both of his parents were born in New York and their parents were born in Russia. In the 1940 and 1950 census he's living with his parents in Venice. He died at the VA Hospital in West LA of cerebral edema stemming from post-op complications from brain tumor surgery. At the time of his death he was married to Shirley Hoffman and worked as a draftsman at Douglas Aircraft. He had only been married since June of 1950. According to his death certificate, he is buried at Hillside Cemetery in Los Angeles. There is a Hillside Cemetery located in Culver City.

Railway was there long before homes were built. People use the railroad right-of-way as a greenbelt park.

It is a common practice in parts of modern world to remove gravesites after a long period of time. Or resell site. Or change ownership of space in graveyards from one family to another if fees not paid.
How is this gruesome? He found some headstones. It's not like he was digging up a serial killer's dump site!

It appears there was an unmarked cemetery there with people being buried there who were supposed to be interred elsewhere. If you look up the name of the fellow on the stone, he was supposed to be in Hillside Memorial Cemetery. Something went wrong and now residents are living on graves. The city is covering this up.

@@anitakristensen4679 I just looked at a 1934 map for the same area. There is in fact a cemetery located at the same location as the guys house. Looks like some developer got a hold of the land in the late 50s and built over the graves but never moved them. All the houses west of the tracks should be sitting on graves. No name for the cemetery, it is possible it may have been Jewish but that is no reason for it to get plowed over. Something is rotten in Denmark about this. The 1951 map of the area shows a "Pacific Crest Cemetery" present at the same location. Based on the maps, it appears they moved the cemetery when the developers started building subdivisions but they left some graves behiind.

Not a developer. Railway owned the land long before the homes were built. They have the right to add another line and every homeowner knew it before they bought their home.
yeah of course the cities records have no documentation of designated cemeteries or burial sites since the birth of a city or town. Developers just wanted build on that land did not want to spend one single penny to relocate all the people buried there to an active cemetery. No respect for the dead or their families.

Plenty of people have large freeways near their homes, and the odds of freeway fatalities are far higher than that or rail fatalities. There's also a rather large airport in the area (LAX) and several fatal crashes have occurred in the vicinity over the years as well. Why are you not upset over those as well?

The railroad company owned the land long before the homes were built. Every home buyer was well aware that additional tracks and railways could be added at any time. They gambled that it wouldn't happen. Property values were actually higher because they used the right-of-way as a greenbelt park. Now they are fighting the loss of their park which will lower their property values.

I bet, back in the day, that neighborhood's developer just spread a 'skim coat' of soil on top of a cemetery (which, at the time, was in a rural, unincorporated area). Probably, the area houses' construction is all slab-on-grade foundations so those suckers could have very well been built right on top of graves. If it turns out the cemetery was specifically Jewish, boy oh boy, that's gonna add a whole other unsavory facet to this already disturbing discovery. It's time to deploy the ground penetrating radar techs. I've lived in 2 cities where old cemeteries were discovered when excavating for new construction (one is a hospital and, due to what some think might be burials that were missed and not relocated, it has an allegedly haunted wing. They had an unusually large amount of unexplained construction worker departures while it was being built and, since it's been open, many staff members don't like to work in that wing). I also lived in a more rural place where old, pioneer cemeteries have been discovered on farmland. Same thing: after a century or so, the farmer who owned and farmed the land found it to be more expedient to lay the headstones down flat and spread a soil layer sufficient for crops over the top instead of working around the settler family's grave markers. Out in the countryside, one can do a lot of things without anyone noticing. And covering over a historic graveyard isn't something one publicizes so the cemetery kind of gets forgotten as more generations pass.

It actually quite common to build homes and buildings on cemeteries. The issue is that most cemeteries close and don't have perpetual care or the owners go bankrupt and can't care for the cemeteries.
Back when that Lawndale neighborhood was developed, palms were greased among the local officials. Several years ago, a 1940s complex of building in my city was torn down and, when they started site prep work for the new construction, they discovered what turned out to be the cemetery of the Japanese residents from the 1800s/early 1900s. Greed made the land desirable and racism made it "okay" for the "powers that be" to look the other way and permit it to be built over.

Nice clickbait title, Fox. Shallow grave STONE is more accurate, but "Forgotten cemetery" would have made a much better attention grabbing headline. Lots of on grade slab construction there, probably graves hidden under the house too by crooked developer. I grew up in Torrance and the tracts in the South Bay got built up rapidly in the early 50s. We lived on what used to be Walteria Lake which was relegated to a sump and housed built on the former lakebed. Lots of settling and cracking issues over the decades because of the thick black clay soil.

Those are just rejected head stones. There are no human remains there. His dad picked up the rejected head stones and put them in the back yard to scare the kids.
So it looks like there's a cemetery in both cities with the same name. And they're are only 11 miles apart.

The railroad will just contract with a excavation company to move the graves. In the '70's I was a superintendent for a construction company. We got a contract to do move a pair of buildings, some park equipment and a cemetery at Grapevine Lake in Grapevine, Texas. They were raising the water level and the cemet. would be covered by the water. In most of the graves there was nothing detectable but in the later ones they had been buried in either steel or conc. liners. We worked most of the summer on just the graves.
Some people obviously committed crimes here for the Almighty dollar. For new homes to literally be built right on top of a cemetery which we all know is illegal as hell. A lot of folks had to be involved. Zoning commissioner, contractors, land owner, city council,etc. They should all be charged
not just the graves, but who puts a trainline 8ft from someone's home?! and not just 1 home a whole neighborhood. Where's the zoning? Where's the residential protection. I can't imagine what its like to live that close to a train line.
Earle Hoffman has a grave maker at Hillside, Culver City. The backyard stone was provided by the VA, I believe it was replaced.
Ancestry has a headstone application for a military stone. Applied for in 1953. According to that document Earle is buried at Hillside Memorial Park.

If there are a number of graves at those residences, I wonder why no family members ever went to visit them. You'd think that at least one or two families would be visiting their deceased relatives every once in a while.
If there are any family left then yes, I agree, ROn, but after the holocaust (only 6 years), we were trying to re-populate and our families were typically small, especially immigrant families coming to America from the ashes of Germany and Poland. Earl may not have any living family left. In our tradition, we typically visit our dead loved ones between Rosh ha Shanna and Yom Kippur. In fact, my family just went to the graves of dead relatives this past Sunday to say kaddish.

So If the train wasn’t being built Jay wouldn’t have ever said anything about the graveyard and would have taken it to his grave but now that it affects his living he cares. Shouldn’t the houses be removed then to find out if there’s more graves
