  • How does my experiMENTAL Japhy ride now? I've changed the bars, seat post, seat angle, wheels, and a few other things. These modifications dropped the weight down to 30.4 lbs. Not bad! Esker has some noteworthy features packed into the Japhy: quad butted tubing, slack head angle, external cable routing, modern reach, mounts for a ton of bags, adjustable chainstays (able to go singlepseed), room for 29+ (on paper), and a great price. Note: the price has increased since the date this video was filmed. For the latest price, build, availability, and information, go here: bit.ly/3uus9lu. I did a similar experiment on my Stooge Dirtbomb frame....Duro Crux 29x3.25 tires on 50mm Duroc rims and they were rubbing something awful on all four contact points (chain and seat stays). I was able to pedal, but the drag was not only rubbing my paint off and burning rubber, but it slowed me down to where I couldn't pick up speed very well....then tried the same tires on LB 39i Recon rims and only got rub on cornering hard, or landing a huck to flat. With the smaller rim, the tires definitely were more "rounded" than when they were on the 50mm rims, and measured more around 3.0 with the corner knobs. Putting the tires back on the 50MM rims and putting that setup on my fat bike made it feel like a do anything adventure rig, but it also just doesn't feel quite the same as being able to put the setup on a boosted 29+ frame. Which is what is claimed with the Stooge. It is a steel frame, so if I felt so inclined, I suppose I could bend the stays out a bit to fit them, but the 2.8 tires on 50mm rims has been pretty enjoyable as of late.
    Great content man!

    When you get a chance look at my custom SS Japhy build. I put on 25mm rise ENVE M6 bars with a 50mm ENVE alloy stem. It feels pretty amazing. My first bars where too low.

    Not sure how I missed this video and not surprised by that tire rub at all. Curious if you like that XR2 on the rear. I've been happy with XR4's front and rear and been thinking of getting an XR2 for out back. I also have a DHRII DHF 3.0, but not sure my terrian needs such an aggressive tire. They might be my winter tires though.
    I love 29+ for techy climbs. A local flow trail has really tough techy climb right at the bottom with a few steep step ups with a tight switchback and guys always sitting around watching that area. See spin outs all the time there. I just power my way through, get comments on how I get through on a hardtail all the time. 29+ for the win.

      Yeah, there was an issue when i released it. It was accidentally scheduled for last week for 2 min. I pulled it and rescheduled it for today, but it didn't work.

    Best use case for 29+ is a second wheelset for a fat bike….at least right now. I’m still hoping we get more 29+ specific frames to the market, but it seems like there’s a slim chance of that happening.

    It sounds like you will get one for bikepacking despite maxing out at 2.8? Side not a Porsche Cayanne is reasonably good at off-roading. My wife's boss has one and took us off-roading in Nevada and did better than I expected and took freeway on ramps like a champ. Back to the bike I take 2.8 on i40 should be fine if i am also in the South West?

    Great video. I’m curious about the seat post. I get the concept which is increasing the effective seat tube angle of the bike. My concern is in the leg/knee placement in relation to spinning the cranks if that makes sense. Does it put more pressure on the knees or make spinning any more awkward than just starting with a bike that already has a steeper seat tube angle?

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  2 года назад +4

      No, it's exactly the same as if it had a steeper seat angle to begin with. The seat just located your sit bones in relation to the bb.

    A 29x2.8 tire on an i35 rim is my favorite tire/rim combo.

      Right on. Have you tried a 40 or 45i yet?

    • @marksandoval5361
      @marksandoval5361 2 года назад +1

      @@hardtailparty I think that the bike industry should just give up on any 29er tire wider than 2.8 and any rim wider than i35. 29x3.0 tires on i40-45 is overkill. It just gets to heavy, slow rolling, and makes it difficult to build a frame around. If that first Surly Krampus had come with 2.7 tires on i32 rims, I think that Plus would have become more of a thing. I've been riding 29+ for about 8 years now and I find the Plus sweet spot to be 2.6-2.8 tires on i30-35mm rims and yes you need to run higher pressures to get this type of tire/rim combo to perform right but I never really liked the sloppy feel of very low pressure 3.0 tires on i40-45 rims anyway.

      @@marksandoval5361 I’m just thinking about switching tires from 27.5+ to 29 on my commencal meta ht, should I get 30 rim and 2.6 or 35 rim and 2.6 (potentially 2.8)?

    • @marksandoval5361
      @marksandoval5361 2 года назад

      @@valeraanovsk1468 Very few modern bikes will fit 29x2.8 tires. The only ones that I know of are the Trek Fuel EX, Salsa Timeberjack, Surly Krampus, and Esker Japhy. I'm not even sure that the Meta HT will fit even 29x2.6 tires and it's highly unlikely it will fit 29x2.8 tires. Therefore, I would be looking for the best rims for 29x2.4-2.6 tires and I would go with i30 rims. The i30 rim is ideal for 2.4-2.6 tires and even a reasonable mount for 2.2 and 2.8 tires. In addition, i30 rims are very common and easy to obtain. Should you bike have clearance for 2.8 tires, an i30 rim is still a reasonable mount.

    • @hardtailparty

      I respectfully disagree, but to each their own. I love 29x3.0 on a 45i rim.
