Don't know if it's a trend or what but five years ago all of my friends couldn't stop talking about Japan (as a coveted travel destination) now that same conversation has shifted towards South Korea. The stay at the temple by far seems like the most interesting part, the scenery is spectacular. Great set of videos Sam!
Thank you very much Guillermo! I feel as though Korea is definitely becoming more of a popular destination worldwide. That is great to see because when I lived there it wasn't.
Staying at a Buddhist temple looks like such a cool experience! The 108 bows is so fascinating but also looks like it would be pretty tiring. Love the beads, too! And the food looks outstanding. I love the idea of washing your own dishes after you eat at the temple. Yet another Korean adventure I'd love to take part in someday!
Haha, David finally learnt to eat without spilling! And Sam, Buddha's concept is universally accepted! Proud that Siddhartha belonged to us and Gautama Buddha to the world! Love from India.
I'm not a Buddhist, although I have to say that of all religions, it's the one that appeals to me the most. Calm, dignified, focussing on self--liberation. Hard not to notice that you and Dave went along totally with the experience. Fantastic video and thanks! Keith (Brit in Berlin).

Sam, you need to keep the Wolverine hair style, looks cool on you! lol. Oh man that 108 bow looks intense, I saw you towards the end when your head dropped but quicker than expected, I am guessing you were getting tired? I don’t blame you but that looked like it hurt, when I saw your head hit the floor at the end I actually said out loud “ouch”!!
Hahaha...thanks! Argh, that is my morning hairstyle ;) Yeah, we were all getting quite tired near the end and I totally lost count so I had no idea when we'd be ending.
Thanks for sharing this experience! Many people that travel to Korea aren't informed about the temples ! ~ I think it would be good for vegetarians to stay here as well ! Personally I'd be worried about waking up with everyone else. I sleep through loud noises and even through lights turned on. The no talking and silence thing about the temple is really nice. (Easy for me since I'm very quiet!)
Thank you. It was truly a great experience. I wish more visitors to Korea would take the time to try something like this. It is a nice contrast with the modern cities and lifestyle.
Can I modify Korean subtitle of this video? Most of videos in this channel has Korean subtitle but it's pretty naive and seems like came from Google translator, I tried to replace it but RUclips says I can't overwrite it.

What an awesome experience. You can see how disciplined the monk's are. I can see why both of you had a hard time keeping quiet for so long as your job is talking and intertaining us.😂😉
Really cute. I'm glad you got this experience. Saying that you got an "experiencing of what it is like to be a monk here," is a vast over statement. Sorry. You have no idea. Yet: I'm glad you got a taste of Jogye Buddhism. It is an amazing tradition. Try it more.
21:06-21:11 Breathing isn't just one of the most BASIC methods of meditation. It's also the MAIN way I meditate when I do. I listen to either music from Enya, a world-famous Irish new age musician and singer; but most often a guided meditation from RUclips or the app "Let's Meditate". Meditating has been a hobby of mine since my graduation from high school, five years ago. It was the subject of a school friend's Senior Project. I attended most of his after-school meditation sessions and absolutely enjoyed them. We would listen to a certain guided meditation from RUclips and breathe in and out repeatedly, seated or laying on the floor. And I finished each and every session feeling plenty relaxed, as I have done sometimes since then.
Lol Samuel, you put banchan (side dishes ) into the wrong bowl (soup bowl). Danmugee (yellow radish piece ) gose to inside of rice bowl wall and banchans go to empty one which you put danmugee into. Anyhow hopefully you guys enjoyed temple stay
I have been studying English for a long time. I heard that English gets better quickly when I see and listen to English contents a lot about my favorite field. Then I accidentally found your RUclips. Because I love traveling. I do not know exactly when, but I have been watching your RUclips since then. Thank you. I can’t wait next video. :) I wish I could meet anywhere in Busan. :) I hope you will enjoy in Busan!
The range of vegetables at 11:01-11:17 looks similar to my experience eating dinner at a Korean restaurant in Springfield, Missouri, with a college friend. With our main courses came bowls of different side vegetables that are part of traditional Korean cuisine. Even so, the restaurant was really peaceful and quiet; in fact, we were literally the ONLY TWO customers dining there at the time!
Hi Samuel, I am interested doing this while traveling to South Korea as a solo female traveler. Two questions: 1) are there any other temples you recommend staying in? Why did you choose this one? 2) where do you keep your luggage? When being in a temple? Thank you so much!
Thank you! That is exciting to hear. To be honest this was organized as part of our group trip. You can experience temple stays all over Korea. If you're interested in a more secluded area you can find places even outside of cities. The luggage was stored in an area just behind where we slept. Kind of like a giant hidden closet.
Take, for example, the columns of temples in countries without history. I am grateful for nature, respect for nature, and learn from nature. There is no passage or break in the pillars of the temples of a country with a history from such a religious view. It starts with raising trees thousands of years ago. Just looking at one of the pillars will make it possible to find differences from a country with history.
i ate in a korean temple as a child and I remember from the monks that you do not waste a grain of rice. They poured water in the bowl to drink the last grains
This was awesome. I swear I always wanted the kind of shirt that monk is wearing (to feel like Bruce Lee!) It looks like the kind of place where I could learn to do pushups and handstands on just 1 finger! As a kid always dreamt of joining a Shaolin Temple. Reminded me of that after many years.
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos I was surprised I had forgotten hours of watching Discovery Channel as a kid. It felt awesome though. Like Inception. Like a half remembered dream. ❤🍻
I'd like to do a temple stay...I'm travelling with my mom who neither understands English or Korean. Would it be too awkward doing the activities without understanding?

Disappointing. You really shouldn't film the monks. I know it'd make a boring video, but it's just a small kindness towards their belief that goes a long way.... I guess some people just don't really care about respect.
Under normal circumstances I agree with you; however, for this program the temple was hosting YTers so they were well aware we would be filming and were happy to have us doing that, so it wasn't a problem at all. I found our host monk was very articulate and relaxed considering how many people were filming the experience.
Budhhist don't pray to budhha, they show respect to budhha. In asian countries bowing down is not praying but a form of showing respect. Buddha himself never said to pray to him, but buddhist bow down to him to show respect they towards budhha.

This is something I'll have to look into if I can get to Korea next year. Looks fascinating.

They walk around every morning and get donations. They did it Thailand and cambodia anyways. :)
They are provided a small salary in Korea to cover basics from what our Monk explained.
I noticed that as well in SE Asia but in Korea I believe they have a different system.
Also they get alms or take donation from all those lanterns.
