  • I'm explaining how fire alarm systems work for new technicians or other employees who deal with these systems. This is my 5th video in a string of many Khan Academy-styled lessons. This video introduces trouble contacts on an FACP and also reviews alarm contacts. I show how you can use an external relays to control multiple building functions even with only one onboard alarm relay.

    Thanks for your efforts,
    One question please, Suppose I have one normally open relay to turn on a fan in case of alarm, In normal condition, the fan is off because the circuit is already open, So how can I supervise this circuit if the wire is cut in normal condition?

    • @JoeKlochan
      @JoeKlochan  4 года назад +2

      In theory you could wire the relay so it's always powered up, then run one leg of the fan circuit through the contact of the relay that's open when the relay has power. That would make the relay fail safe. If something happened to the wiring going to the fan relay, the relay would change states and the fan would start. You could then take it a step further and put a power supervision relay on the power circuit that runs the fan to supervise that portion of the circuit.

  • @gntviix582
    @gntviix582 5 лет назад

    hello sir thank you for the vieos i think u made a mistake with the fans ...first of all the hot wire should go to the commun then it leaves the relays from the NC so when the relay is activated it opens and stops the fan from sppining again thank you so much

    • @JoeKlochan
      @JoeKlochan  5 лет назад

      On this style of relay it's labeled out of the box. So in other words, NC is closed until the relay gets power. At that point, NC is actually the open contact, and NO is closed. Wiring to the NO contact when and keeping the relay powered makes this a fail safe circuit. I know that can be confusing.

  • @justintate2941
    @justintate2941 8 лет назад

    Shouldn't the door and fan relay be NC since you want the circuit to be complete (door open and fan running) under normal conditions?

    • @JoeKlochan
      @JoeKlochan  8 лет назад +1

      Justin,
      At around the 5:30 mark in three video I explain that once that MR-201 relay gets powered up, its contacts change states. At that point the NC contact opens and the NO contact closes. I emphasize it again at the 7:30 mark because I can see how it could be confusing. the relays labels apply to the state of the relay out of the box, with no power applied.

      Yes, seems like he was mixing up NC/NO a bit

    • @JoeKlochan
      @JoeKlochan  4 года назад +1

      Patrick, no I wasn't. When the MR-201 gets power, the coil picks and NO closes. That's important to understand.

      You are right, my bad! I was the one mixed up.

    Can you tell me how to wire up a damper shutdown without 24v and using the 120v?

    • @JoeKlochan
      @JoeKlochan  4 года назад

      Alex, you need to use a relay you can control, like an MR-101 or equivalent. Then run the damper through the contacts. It might be helpful to watch the video on elevator shunt trip. That shows how to control an MR-101 using the power you're controlling (in your case, the damper power). Be careful though, it's easy to screw up and you don't want to damage your panel.

    On a voice evac it would be cool if it said "A trouble conition is present at... " Adressanle I mean

    • @JoeKlochan
      @JoeKlochan  9 лет назад

      That can easily be done on modern systems. I've never seen it required or desired.
