I have a rescue as well. Previous owners were real bad. Took about a year to get him to put away alot of bad habits. He didnt get the lesson until i made an example of him. Now everything is alot better and he can somewhat be around ppl. But the moral of the story is they are animals and they are pack animals. You gotta establish alpha so they're is no confusion in their adult life. One hard lesson by his owner can save his life. And that key word is "one". Dogs remember when they messed up.

I've heard from other trainers you can't teach a dog to bite or lunge aggressively by telling them they're a good boy and calming them every time they want to bite and this has worked for me. My dog who's a rescue wouldn't be alive today if it wasn't for telling him he's a good boy whenever people are around. All other training methods didn't work, we've even got him down to strangers petting him and him not reacting to it. Yes we even told him he's a good boy and all that while he was snarling and it would instantly calm him down. I feel like there is a situation for this and judging on my dogs behavior all it does is reassure him that he's doing good by staying back and let's him know I'm there and not to be scared

All for the prong, we in fact use one on our dog. Great tool when used and warn correctly. That however was an extremely harsh correction. No need to put all your body behind making that collar pinch. All you accomplished was scaring the shit out of the dog and I’m sure hurting the dog. Unnecessary correction.

@Kate Mohr Thats exactly why it wears a prong or even an E-collar. Allow the tools to do the work. No need to put extra spice behind the tools. A hard corrective snap from the wrist/ arm is more than enough. Believe me I know the power behind some of these breeds. I have a Bull Terrier and a Mastiff X. Still doesn't justify putting all your body behind the use of the tools to get the dog to fly up in the air.

@@kylea7864 I do agree with what you’re saying usually however in this case I think the yank was a correction combined with literally trying to pull the dog away from being hit by that car. The village we live in has tiny gardens definitely not enough for two very energetic dogs like them. To make matters worse they don't take the dogs on walks and instead let them wander the tiny garden shitting everywhere (the owners don't pick it up despite having two small children) and barking at the smallest signs of movement. We can't use our garden now because they will lunge at the fence line barking

My parents have two dogs that are now nearly 9 years old. We all know they are too strong for my mother; I used to walk the dogs with her when they were younger.
The dogs both pull and act like they lead the walk because she never takes control in the walk. They have even dragged her chasing rabbits twice.
I say all of this because BOTH of those dogs instantly learn with me they are not allowed to pull on the leash under any circumstances when I walk them. Sure, the dog in my control and their sibling get nervous when I walk slower, but everyone knows I am in control of the dog.
I spent a solid few years helping get the dogs out of their bad habbit, but as soon as I left they got back to it. Its a shame really. Now whenever I walk my own dog, a neighbor actually walked up to me and asked me how my dog's leash is always so lax and she is always next to me. I find it interesting.
