Hey coach, my first game ever is tomorrow. I know you made this video five years ago but thank you. I was surprised that my coach hasn't taught us sliding yet so I decided to watch this. Thank you. I will edit this when my game is over. Edit: My bad it took two months. We won the championship, slid, and I even hit a double in the championship game. Double and a single. I was the winning run and we won. Thanks coach.
Well done coach. Most little league coaches were not taught how to slide until they were ages 12 or later, and as a result they don’t even know how to teach young players how to slide. Teach them young and they will love to run bases for a lifetime.
Thanks my son is gonna love this... He's 10 and unfortunately coaches don't have a lot of time to teach them properly... We just recently found you I'm excited to use some these when I practice with him
Hey man this really helped me out, i broke my leg in april not knowing the proper way to slide and ive been using ur video to develop my form and now im getting ready for high school season, reallt appreciate it man.
to this i add: stretch before game. if the body is awkward or tight, one is far more prone to injury. whereas, being properly loose, the slide comes smoothly. in martial arts -and skateboarding alike, one of first peripheral skills that needs to be learned is that of falling without injury. concentrate especially on glutes, hamstrings, lower back.
Finally !!!!!! Thank You Justin !!!! One of the most overlooked skills presented in a learnable mode. Couple of years ago our high softball was destroying the opposition with their bats when in a one week period at midseason they lost five starters because of poor slides! I never forgot that so I try to instill that in my young teams, however I'm getting old ( I'm 68) & revert more & more on videos to demonstrate but could never find a decent sliding video til now. Even if we lose I just don't ever want to carry an injured player off the field again & do I say Thank You Justin. And God Bless You
Great video! This is something we continue to work on even at the high school level. Now that the kids are aware of this part of the game, everyone gets to the field early to see what the field conditions are. Nobody wants to short slide and get tagged out in front of your friends.
Being an airsoft player. This tutorial is very helpful with learning how to slide in that sport. Gives an advantage and it isn't something many people expect
This video (and your others) are great! I'm coaching my son's U10 team this year (first year) and recently found your content. It's been super helpful. I appreciate you putting these together to help coaches and players. Keep up the good work Coach!
3:47 I wear batting gloves so it doesn’t bother my knuckles lol edit yo (09/17/20); i quit playing about two years ago & i actually forgot about this comment .. i was fucking in 4th grade playing up to 14 & under, y’all can chill now LMFAOO😭
this is awesome, thank you so much! the other day at my game i should’ve slid into home plate but i didn’t know how to slide so i completely ran into the catcher (luckily i was safe) but after that i figured i should learn how to slide lol! thank you this was great!
Thank you so much! This is my son’s first year playing and he’s catching on really quick, I just needed some tips on teaching him how to slide- very clear techniques that you showed! Thank you!
Great video, Justin. I've volunteered to coach my son's baseball team this year. I've played baseball all my life but it's one thing to play and another thing to teach. And sliding definitely gets forgotten but is an essential baseball skill, whether you're running the bases or coming in on a sinking line drive in the outfield. I'll definitely be checking out your other videos as well.
Thank you, Tina! I agree with you, every player needs to learn how to properly slide to avoid injury and stay safe on the field. I hope you'll find our other videos to be just as helpful!
Love your videos! My daughter is 10, and it's her first year playing baseball or any sport for that matter. Talk about teaching her every single skill an athletic person needs. Just last week I was teaching her how to run, so sliding seems far off. She enjoys your videos, and I'm sure this will help her lots. She goes on her knees when she tries to slide because she's too nervous.
While in the ,military we never were instructed on fundamentals, even it was fast-pitch soft ball. I was given a slide signal at 3rd base and went in both feet . I left the game with a broken ankle. This is a teaching event I'll share with my son. Thanks for the easy to follow directions, great job.
Thank you Justin for doing this type of videos. It been long I played baseball and I what to go back into it so ii do these training videos to get ready I guess.
Good presentation, Coach B. Would like the "swing the bat for small hits" so that the players learn the importance of watching the ball those final 15 feet and actually SEE the bat hit the ball.
Loved video. Made sense. Love u to teach dangers of throwing yourself. Full forse hands first and how tsyay in control and avoid using your shoulders at all when sliding. As dislocated shoulders are painfull and can cause future physical pain and problems. Exoress how important it is to really evaluate the situation before sliding at all if feels in any way risky. Folliw your guts first reaction. Theres a, Time for sliding and time a for staying.
My son is 10 years old and for him learning how to do anything starts with a RUclips video. Your Sliding video was very helpful so thanks for that. It would be great if you could do a bunting video, that included how to when to and the advantage's of knowing how to lay down a great bunt. Thanks again for the sliding Video
Perhaps the most overlooked part of the game for 8, 9 and even ten-year-olds. As a coach, I'm sad to say I often "don't have the time" to work on this with my young players. Thanks, Justin! You're not only a good coach, but have such a positive energy for the game we all love. Sad to say, there are too many ego driven coaches out there. Just come to Mercer County, Kentucky, and you'll walk into "Ego Central."
Oh yeah ... Ty Cobb had something like 6 different and distinct slides depending on the situation. *(I know Cobb is reputed to a highly flawed human being) but he did know the game. That said, have you thought about doing a video, Justin, regarding all the different slides including "The Pete Rose head first method?"
I really like how you started with a safety talk and then actually got into the Point, because a lot of videos are really long like as far as 10-20 minutes.
I just wanna say man thank u for making these videos. I'm getting better a lot by watching them and by working hard. Keep it up please. Your awesome!!!
I just watched this video my first time ever sliding best coach ever I went out there for like 30 minutes and now I think I’m like really good at sliding
HashBaller You have to push your bottom foot into the ground. Practice it a lot because it could hurt your ankle. As you push your foot into the ground, your core and upper body needs to push yourself up.
I want to second the comment about throwing your hands up. Instinctually when falling we throw our hands down to catch ourselves. I did this many times and ended up tearing cartilage in my wrist. The solution was to hold my batting gloves in my hand while I'm running on the bases. This prevents me from being able to catch myself with my hands.
How do you feel about head first? My high school coach doesn't mind it but I dislocated my finger doing so and missed 3 games. If you were a high school coach, would you allow your players to slide head first?
Do you have a video on base stealing? I'm not the best batter or outfielder nor do I have the strongest throwing arm. But right now I am the fastest baserunner and one of the fastest people on the team. Probably will be the fastest next year cause the person faster than me is leaving the team. I want to use my speed to my advantage as best as I can.
Thank you!!! I learned lots! I was never taught and I was expected to know how for my intermediate team. I kinda embarrassed myself. I’m getting better now, thanks!
I got a bad knee pop at practice and my knee was aching and paining for about 2 months and I couldn’t slide. My knee is all better now but idk how to slide
I’m scared I’m gonna go to slide and I’m just gonna sit there looking dumb😂 Edit: we tried sliding at practice I was right😂 my back foot got stuck in dirt and I didn’t move....I wanted to die
yeah, i don't play baseball either. Me and my friends just want to see if we can incorporate some crazy movements techniques on our martial arts practice
Hey coach, Just started baseball 2 weeks ago. Yesterday at the practice we've worked on slides. I was kind off septical on how to do it properly. Fist try, I broke my left ankle... Wish I was watching this video earlier...
Sliding is good, but I suggest you make a video on what to do if you do steal a base by sliding after leading-off from first base and sliding into second base safely, and the ball goes by the 2nd baseman trying to put me out--and I see that the ball goes past him into the outfield? Should I stay on second base or risk being out by doing a "double steal" - getting up immediately from the slide and run towards 3rd?
Exactly what I teach my players coach, thanks! The grass out in Arizona isn’t great for sliding so I always use a piece of cardboard when I start them out.
You should eventually get to teaching head first as well. And yeah. The first time I slid I sprained my ankle. I was stealing second on a late steal. I slid to late hit the bag. Sprained my ankle. It was a bad throw and I could have ran to third but the initial pain was too much too get back up immediately.
That will probably be a video we cover in the future! I haven't done that video yet because I really don't like younger players to slide headfirst very much. It's too easy to get hurt - break fingers, wrists, etc.
4:47 grass stains spoiler alert! A few years ago we used to pick one of the dads in attendance at their son's little league game to guest cocah. One time we had this dad rocking his obviously brand new, impossibly white, white skinny jeans😂--doing some sliding drills with the kids, found out the hard way, those nice white jeans were a magnet for chlorophyll🤣 at the end of the game, wasn't too sure if he was playing or coaching!
Sounds like stupid clothes to wear in my opinion. With that being said I bet the guy loved those pants and he sacrificed them that day for the kids. His clothes may be goofy but I applaud him for manning up that day.
@@fishflyinggames6676 agree totally, why otherwise seemingly normal dudes think rocking their brand new tight white jeans suddenly makes them look stylish is beyond my power to grasp. The funniest part about the baseball dad, was he started off way overly prissy and up-tight about not wanting to get his new white jeans dirty/stained. The enthusiasm of the kids for the game became contagious,, the more the dude got into the game, the less inhibited he was, the more stains he got on his new white skinny jeans, and the more fun he was having. The kids got him to come out of his shell and have fun getting those nice white jeans dirty!🤣
@@fishflyinggames6676 Squeezing himself into new white skinny jeans, man-card revoked! Getting them covered in dirt, first small step to getting it reinstated🤣
the old saying if your uniform stays clean, you didn't play hard enough! If the guest-coach's nice skinny white jeans stayed clean, he didn't coach hard enough😁
wish I saw this video before. I just started playing baseball not too long ago and never really learned the technique of sliding. and this past week I messed up my ankle

Coaches, reward your young players on a hot day at practice with a slip n slide... and use it to teach proper slides

Coach Jorge that’s how I learned
