Hey coach, my first game ever is tomorrow. I know you made this video five years ago but thank you. I was surprised that my coach hasn't taught us sliding yet so I decided to watch this. Thank you. I will edit this when my game is over.
Edit: My bad it took two months. We won the championship, slid, and I even hit a double in the championship game. Double and a single. I was the winning run and we won. Thanks coach.

Well done coach. Most little league coaches were not taught how to slide until they were ages 12 or later, and as a result they don’t even know how to teach young players how to slide. Teach them young and they will love to run bases for a lifetime.

to this i add: stretch before game.
if the body is awkward or tight, one is far more prone to injury. whereas, being properly loose, the slide comes smoothly. in martial arts -and skateboarding alike, one of first peripheral skills that needs to be learned is that of falling without injury.
concentrate especially on glutes, hamstrings, lower back.

Finally !!!!!! Thank You Justin !!!!
One of the most overlooked skills presented in a learnable mode. Couple of years ago our high softball was destroying the opposition with their bats when in a one week period at midseason they lost five starters because of poor slides! I never forgot that so I try to instill that in my young teams, however I'm getting old ( I'm 68) & revert more & more on videos to demonstrate but could never find a decent sliding video til now. Even if we lose I just don't ever want to carry an injured player off the field again & do I say Thank You Justin. And God Bless You

Great video, Justin. I've volunteered to coach my son's baseball team this year. I've played baseball all my life but it's one thing to play and another thing to teach. And sliding definitely gets forgotten but is an essential baseball skill, whether you're running the bases or coming in on a sinking line drive in the outfield. I'll definitely be checking out your other videos as well.

Just last week I was teaching her how to run, so sliding seems far off. She enjoys your videos, and I'm sure this will help her lots. She goes on her knees when she tries to slide because she's too nervous.

Loved video. Made sense. Love u to teach dangers of throwing yourself. Full forse hands first and how tsyay in control and avoid using your shoulders at all when sliding. As dislocated shoulders are painfull and can cause future physical pain and problems. Exoress how important it is to really evaluate the situation before sliding at all if feels in any way risky. Folliw your guts first reaction. Theres a, Time for sliding and time a for staying.

Perhaps the most overlooked part of the game for 8, 9 and even ten-year-olds. As a coach, I'm sad to say I often "don't have the time" to work on this with my young players. Thanks, Justin! You're not only a good coach, but have such a positive energy for the game we all love. Sad to say, there are too many ego driven coaches out there. Just come to Mercer County, Kentucky, and you'll walk into "Ego Central."

Oh yeah ... Ty Cobb had something like 6 different and distinct slides depending on the situation. *(I know Cobb is reputed to a highly flawed human being) but he did know the game. I want to second the comment about throwing your hands up. Instinctually when falling we throw our hands down to catch ourselves. I did this many times and ended up tearing cartilage in my wrist. The solution was to hold my batting gloves in my hand while I'm running on the bases. This prevents me from being able to catch myself with my hands.

    Hey coach,
Just started baseball 2 weeks ago. Yesterday at the practice we've worked on slides. I was kind off septical on how to do it properly.
Fist try, I broke my left ankle...
Wish I was watching this video earlier...

Great Video. I would add to this the pop up slide. Nice transition from here

Sliding is good, but I suggest you make a video on what to do if you do steal a base by sliding after leading-off from first base and sliding into second base safely, and the ball goes by the 2nd baseman trying to put me out--and I see that the ball goes past him into the outfield? Should I stay on second base or risk being out by doing a "double steal" - getting up immediately from the slide and run towards 3rd?

I was never taught, and I was always shunned and told to just slide. Although I don't play anymore, I do appreciate this very much. Thank you

Exactly what I teach my players coach, thanks! The grass out in Arizona isn’t great for sliding so I always use a piece of cardboard when I start them out.

You should eventually get to teaching head first as well. And yeah. The first time I slid I sprained my ankle. I was stealing second on a late steal. I slid to late hit the bag. Sprained my ankle. It was a bad throw and I could have ran to third but the initial pain was too much too get back up immediately.

That will probably be a video we cover in the future! I haven't done that video yet because I really don't like younger players to slide headfirst very much. It's too easy to get hurt - break fingers, wrists, etc.

4:47 grass stains spoiler alert! A few years ago we used to pick one of the dads in attendance at their son's little league game to guest cocah. One time we had this dad rocking his obviously brand new, impossibly white, white skinny jeans😂--doing some sliding drills with the kids, found out the hard way, those nice white jeans were a magnet for chlorophyll🤣 at the end of the game, wasn't too sure if he was playing or coaching!

Sounds like stupid clothes to wear in my opinion. With that being said I bet the guy loved those pants and he sacrificed them that day for the kids. His clothes may be goofy but I applaud him for manning up that day.

@@fishflyinggames6676 agree totally, why otherwise seemingly normal dudes think rocking their brand new tight white jeans suddenly makes them look stylish is beyond my power to grasp. The funniest part about the baseball dad, was he started off way overly prissy and up-tight about not wanting to get his new white jeans dirty/stained. The enthusiasm of the kids for the game became contagious,, the more the dude got into the game, the less inhibited he was, the more stains he got on his new white skinny jeans, and the more fun he was having. The kids got him to come out of his shell and have fun getting those nice white jeans dirty!🤣

@@fishflyinggames6676 Squeezing himself into new white skinny jeans, man-card revoked! Getting them covered in dirt, first small step to getting it reinstated🤣

the old saying if your uniform stays clean, you didn't play hard enough! If the guest-coach's nice skinny white jeans stayed clean, he didn't coach hard enough😁

I just recently found your channel and subbed. I have been watching so many of your videos the last 3 weeks and it has helped me teach my 5yr old son and several of other of his teammates. I'm in my 1st yr as an assist coach and your videos will become very helpful in the future.
