He didn't betray him he was looking out for him it's better than what Mickey did in Rocky 3 where he was putting Rocky in easy fights to shield him from Clubber Lang. Rocky was saying don't fight him because of not only what he saw Drago do to his father but what Drago did to him. Mickey lied to Rocky and was protecting Rocky but also filling him with a false sense of security and wasn't honest with him until it was too late. Rocky kept it 100 with Adonis but he knew Adonis would not listen to him that's why he backed out.

To watch some body u care about friends with die n ur arms Apollo wanted to b a man and he told rock no matter wat don't throw n the towel and having to live with guilt 4 yrs and now u standin eye to eye with his son bout to get n the same situation rocky didn't want nothing to happen to Adonis he wasn't going to let lighting strike twice and he love Adonis like a son I would have told sum1 I care about the same thing n the same situation.

He didn't betray him rename the title he didn't want to train him and if you've seen rocky IV you would know everything he went through after apollo's death. Hes afraid history will repeat itself and still feels guilty for what happened to apollo and doesnt want the same thing to happen to adonis
