  • Dangerous Burl Live Edge Bowl Woodturning
    Super scary wood bowl turning. USE CAUTION!
    I knew this Live Edge Burl Live Oak Bowl wasn't going to be easy. However, I didn't realize that about halfway in it was going to try to attack me. With the wormholes, bark enclosures, and spalt, I wasn't going to give up turning this beautiful wooden bowl. And I'm glad I didn't, the results are amazing. Please remember to use super caution when woodturning any piece of unusual or irregular wood.

    That turned out great! A little tricky but some precautions prevented a disaster! Do you ever use epoxy to fill in areas or stengthen weak spots? I would think in some cases it could be helpful. Thanks for sharing Kent!

    Love that bowl, where cai I get the fine nibs for CA bottles and how do you avoid ca penetrating your skin when filling cracks etc with ca & sawdust?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 года назад

      Thanks. The CA nibs should come with your CA when you purchase. You can spray the CA with accelerator which dries it quick, but you will probably get a little on your fingers. No problem it comes off…after a day or two. ;) Happy Turning!

    Absolutely gorgeous, Kent. Lots of nervous moments around 35 minutes but the end product is just beautiful. I’ve learnt where the expression ‘gaffer’ tape comes from, too - I never knew it was a movie term, but hey ho. By the way, that’s the first time I’ve heard someone refer to a half inch bowl gouge as small or smaller - I’ve just bought an Ellsworth / Irish grind 1/2 inch gouge and it seems at least twice the size of my 3/8 inch one! Excellent stuff anyhow, thank you v much. Best Hugh

    Fantastic Bowl!! Your videos are extremely helpful! Thank you.
    I have a similar shaped eucalyptus burl that I am trying to turn at the moment. I have attached the flattest side of the burl to a faceplate which is centred, although as i turn on the lathe it starts to vibrate to a point that i don't think it is safe enough to turn. Do you have any advice as to how to get more equal weight distribution or or how to stop the rocking and vibrating of the lathe?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 года назад +1

      First of all, turn the lathe speed down if the lathe is variable speed. If that's not possible, be sure to stand out of the line of fire and slow turn away material until the piece becomes more balanced. These types of turnings rarely become perfectly balanced ever. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    So, I'm a 61-year-old lady whose Dad did tree work on the side, his entire life.
    We heated the entire house with a wood burning stove in the 1970s.
    He & mom bought 75 acres of land in the early 1950s, so wood was super easy to come by. Not to mention all the tree work he did.
    All these years, I've had NO IDEA what the glob of tree is called on the trunk of a tree, but I've certainly seen & wondered about them my entire life!
    I've always thought they were quite interesting!
    Now I know what they're called and some info about them! I always wondered if it was full of bugs or ants of some type, and apparently that can cause the burl. And fungus.
    Thanks for giving me something to learn new today!

    CA glue and saw dust combination has always been questionable in my mind for strength. I’ve seen too many failures in bonding over the years. It might be good for putting balsa wood air planes together, but I’ve always questioned its strength while turning wood.
    If I encounter a void in the wood that will be eventually turned away, I will mix a concoction of baking soda and CA glue to fill it. This makes a very hard and strong temporary patch. But, you don’t want to leave it on the finished product surface since it will not take stains or other finishes other than paint. However, as I think about it, what’s to keep one from mixing CA glue with saw dust and baking soda to make patches. Maybe some dyes or other coloring could be mixed to patch wood voids or punky wood.

    Great video and a really interesting piece of wood! I have a question for you. When I turn bowls, I usually sand and finish the outside before I turn it around and put it in the chuck. In this case, since there are so many bark inclusions and punky areas, I would think that some sanding sealer and finish might help to stabilize the bowl as you hollow it. Did you consider doing something like that to limit the dangers of losing pieces while hollowing? If so, I'd like to hear what your thoughts were and why you decided to go without.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 года назад

      Yes, indeed, I will use shellac to strengthen weak fibers and glue delicate areas if needed. With an open design like this bowl, accessing the exterior after the turning is not much of a problem, so waiting until the end is ok. Hope that helps. Happy Turning!

    How many times did you need to sharpen your tools on this burl... how many different tools were used, to avoid dulling them in this turning job?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 года назад

      Not sure, maybe 4-5 times to the sharpening wheel. Two tools, one 5/8" gouge to rough and a 1/2" to make finishing cuts.

    Nice! You're right, oak is hard to work with on a lathe. I can't imagine what it's like turning a burl of oak. i've got two burls drying to turn. One is cherry and the other is maple. They will be my first burl bowls. Any suggestions are appreciated

    The expertise used to turn the interrupted cut of varying hardness is amazing. The morse taper extension in the tailstock is commonly called a drill extension and is available from machine shop suppliers ($20-$30) with different morse tapers in the hole and the shank. This lathe has standard #2 morse tapers so getting 2 extensions with a #2 morse taper shank combined with #1 morse taper bore (hole) effectively allows turning very small projects like pens in larger lathes using small lathe centres and drives. Larger bore than shank adapters are also available for larger accessories but have to be used with caution because large accessories can overload the lathe.

    Hi Kent. I bought a maple burl that was cut in December of 2020. Should I cut it into two pieces and let it dry that way or should I leave it whole? How long should it dry? It’s about two feet long and almost completely circumvented the tree trunk. Thanks. Tom

    I love the work you do. It has given me lots of ideas, from turning different types of wood, to how you set up your work area. I'm curious though, if you have any preferences on location of each gouge. For instance one side is all spindle type and the other side bowl type, or carbide?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 года назад +1

      Thank you very much! I'm not sure about your question. I use all bowl gouges and turning tools intended for bowls. I only use the spindle gouge for minor details, like the dovetail angle of the tenon. Happy Turning!

    hi Kent, We have an odd shaped burl that we are having trouble determining how to get the most out of it. Your burl is almost bowl shaped to start with. Ours is 5 feet long, and about 20 inches in diameter. We have a sawmill. My thought is to cut it into 3 6 -7 inch slabs and then cut bowl blanks. Do you have any thoughts?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 года назад

      Burls are tricky Chris. Yes, it sounds like you are on the right path. Perhaps cut a small section and turn it. Then you will be able to best determine what to do with the remainder. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    Kent. I haven’t heard the tape referred to gaffers tape. Up here we refer to it as duct tape. We had a tv personality who portrayed this off centre kind of guy. The show was known as the Red Green show. He used duct tape to mend everything or connect everything. It was quite humorous. Lasted several years too. Tom

    • @TurnAWoodBowl

      I'm familiar to the Red Green Show, very funny stuff. But, no, this is not duct tape, it's a completely different animal. Duct tape will leave gummy adhesive behind and the hold is so-so compared to gaffer's tape. Happy Turning!
