That performance was soul, country, the backwater, the Appalachians - the real America! It unified everyone.
Well said
I saw an interview with Chris Stapleton, where he said he classifies himself as Country, but he sings whatever he feels like at that moment. Fortunately, for us, he can sing anything!
Yes you are right! I saw that interview also. For me he is my rocker.
Dresses like Country, got the hair for Rock & Roll, but Chris Stapleton has the voice of soul.
Perfectly said!!
Chris did something special with this. He made the anthem sound like a song, not another rendition of an anthem, but a fully fledged song in its own right. I've never heard anyone give the anthem its own character like that.
Whitney Houston did! He and Whitney both did the song true justice. ❤
Chris is his own genre🔥plays, writes, sings👏🏽
He was a songwriter for a long time before his wife Morgane convinced him to start performing, and he admits he still gets stage fright to this day. Watch him doing "Tennessee Whiskey" live in Austin 2019, Morgane is singing backup and you can see him looking at her throughout the song as reassurance. Awesome performance.
I love this country. It breaks my heart to see what’s happening to her
CS!!! The best vocalist ever!! A fellow Kentuckian!! I'm so proud of him!! Just beautiful and passionate!
He IS a soulful and blues singer !!!
Chris sits in country because he established himself first as a songwriter that wrote for all the big country names. And his storytelling is very inline with classic country. To me, Chris Stapleton’s genre is Chris Stapleton.
His control, without even looking like he's trying is what's crazy, in any song he does. This was another level, though.
Can't classify this gem of a man. I personally love his raw bluesy tunes but he can do no wrong singing whatever he feels. Truly gifted and blessed from above!
This an award winning rendition. People’s Choice, Grammys and any other award you can think of.
5 minutes brought America 🇺🇸 together! Amen 🙏🏼
A lot of the old school country artists were heavily influenced by the blues. Country got away from that and moved closer to pop for many years but thanks to artists like CS, it's bringing the blues element back in. I believe ANY genre of music is made better when influenced by blues and soul.
When you grow up around the coal mines and hardships of Eastern Kentucky, you’re gonna have some serious soul. You earned it. ❤️
To be clear, you had wondered about lip syncing-Chris Stapleton does. Not. Lip. Sync. Ever. He is such a gifted singer that it feels like he is doing some soul channeling while he sings. He never sings a song exactly the same way twice. He’s truly one of the few gifted singers of the world. His version, Whitney’s and Marvin Gaye’s are my top three, in no particular order.
It was so soulfull and emotional, the entire stadium was so quiet and tuned in, it was great. I love it when a big voice singer understands how impactful singing quietly can be. I am with you on diction, I want to understand what you are saying when you sing. Whitney is the best for traditional anthem performance, love Chris' version.
BEST VERSION EVER IMO!!!!
Chris is bluesy/country, he is very soulful, very rich and comes across so American. It’s crazy. And as a Navy veteran in the United States in America I am proud to be an American every day. Chris’s version will always be the best ever song. In my opinion he did amazing job.
Thank you for your service and sacrifices.
Hi Mr. Harris. I think this is the best version and performance of the National Anthem of all time. Chris' version was a fusion of blues and gospel, he played and sang live and he made the crowd FEEL the song. It was sublime, powerful and spiritual.
I agree. It's not only the best version ever, he also wasn't lip syncing.
I am a die hard fan of Chris Stapleton and I agree with you 💯 percent. Thank you Sir for sharing. Sending love and light from The Kingdom of Canada 💜🙏☝️
Blues is what I hear when I hear Chris Stapleton.
OMG i got chills listening to that
I get chills listening to this man sing he can sing anything and make it beautiful.
Phew, what a voice! 😍😍
Spiritual singer category ✨ he hits you in the heart
Chris and Whitney the gold standard for that song.
Chris and Whitney had excellent performances of the National Anthem!
Reba Mcentire also just did an amazing Superbowl National Anthem.
Chris is soul and country. Those genres are not diametrically opposed since they both have common roots in southern blues.
Chris just does it so effortlessly. Check out his performance of Garth Brooks' "Shameless". I was nervous when he started so high, but his voice never strained. I'm going to see him in July and can't wait.
I know! Right? He slayyy Shameless. I am flying to Toronto in August to see him, saw him last year October in Grand forks Minnesota by the way I live in LA. Go figure!
Went and saw him in kentucky last year. Best concert I've ever been to. The sounds, audio, and visuals....top notch
I’m not a American but this be my bestest Anthem of the USA 🇺🇸 ever awesome CS RESPECT!!!
Took us to church!!!
He is really country blues but he can do anything. He makes it his own
Most soulful singer since Stevie Ray Vaughn. Real deep and strong blues player.
i agree, when i first hear a song by Chris stapelton,i didnot know he was White, and Long Hair.....and such...Wow this guy is killing it....Applaus...Greetings from germany...God Bless.
Chris is a soul singer for sure. Goosebumps.
At the end of the day, our Anthem💗 means everything! Just sing it with pride. We’ll work the rest out. K. Let’s just keep trying to work it out. Not that difficult.
Excellent honest assessment of a fine performance.
Really big statement!!
Ya gotta hear him sing Two brothers it will blow you away
🇺🇸
Chris Stapleton could go in the Blues genre in my opinion but he definitely has SOUL.
BEAUTIFUL! Love It
I read a thread a while back in which people were complaining that he covered an Etta song note for note (the tempo was very different). He's 1 of these guys that have done well and over a short career thus far & there are those who want to hate him for it. This was the best since Whitney (rest her soul).
Check out his first bands, the steel drivers and Jompson Brothers. Both are blue grass bands, which are soulful. He did an interview where he said he grew up listening to everything and his favorite was Snoop Dog.
I call Chris Stapleton a country blues singer bc u can tell by his action in music he uses both in his on way and it is amazing!!!!
A couple of Chris' choices with this performance gave me big time Ray Charles vibes. Chris got somethin extra special going on. A great vocal performance complimented by an understated guitar.
yup, chris took the world to church that day, in the old country
Have to watch this like everyday now
Either a unicorn here or an angel ...both thank you, god does love us!
Chris Stapleton ain't country. He's just a guy singing songs that feel good to him and Morgan and thank goodness feels good to us
Beautiful reaction! Thank you!
How can you not
He clarifies his words
That's the soulful in him muttling words...it's how he sings...
Brother, Country has had soul from the beginning, even before Hank.
effing enjoyed it a ton. alpha tier musical content. Heard this song a couple days ago and I fell in love 😵
You are ferfectly right man.
he is unique
Mr. Harris you just listened to greatness.
Chris did write a lot of country songs for big artists, he also is in a blue grass band with his wife.
Excellent review and reaction Mr. Harris. Love your breakdowns.
The fact Whitney Houston was pre recorded and Stapleton was live is the only reason I put him ahead of her
Chris said I'm just me. I sing what I would like to hear. He's also said he was influenced so much by Ray Charles, Aretha, soul, R&B, jazz
I love your take on Chris Stapleton and you are right on.
I love this man he is Awesome 👏🏽
Kentucky, born and raised!
Never thought someone could sing this better than Whitney. CS you did that!!
Playing with the steel drivers really helped him with singing as well a lot of bluegrass picking and singing without amplification will definitely make or break you , no reverb or pitch correction when your belting
He’s country! Before Chris started singing himself, he made his living for decades writing country songs for other artistes and has written many hits. Chris classifies himself as a country singer.
I'm not taking anything away from Whitney but Chris did this live and absolutely killed it. And before I get hate Whitney recorded hers and yes I know why. It doesn't change the fact that this rendition is legendary and belongs right there with any that's ever been done.
I love that you said he is a soulful singer... It is so true... I'm a 56 yr old white woman.............Chris has soul... and I love it
Splendid reaction video.
I view Chris Stapleton as a low country blues singer.
He killed it
Listen to him sing 'It's a Man's World' Live
So we sing on vowels, but my vowels are so southern lol 😂
Country music has soul!
Nice analysis! ❤
Great reaction, and love the James Brown poster! I'm a huge soul fan... Otis Redding and Sam Cooke are my favs
I think he puts himself in the country genre.
On the Grammys..after the performance with Stevie Wonder, he had a smile on his face like a "kid in a candy store". He has such respect for other artists, particularly the masters of the craft like Wonder. ** P.S. You are hearing that Kentucky "mountain accent", although his is slight, compared to many...like Patty Loveless. No doubt diction and vocal mechanisms also come into play. Appreciate your reaction and candor.
I'm not American but this is fantastic all of America should be so proud
The Star Spangled Banner was the audition song in school. Oh boy, that was years ago.
i not American but i got chills
CS is flat out soul!
Hi my friend fantastic reaction a young gentleman taking RUclips by storm is ren -hi ren this video has had 3 million views in 2 weeks and it is pure genius worth a look and at the end has a great message many thanks love and respect from the UK 👍👍👍👍👍👍🌟😀😀 amazing channel 👍
Love it and you make me feel I'm at the dentist or principals office 😆
That is his accent and his style of singing. In kentucky, they say some words that they cut short.😢
I'm a Brit, and that brought a tear to my eye!
Country is just white man's blues. It all comes from soul music. He took some influence from blues and love Aretha. He can sing some bluegrass as well. He really sings everything so well. He just does no wrong. Best anthem since Whitney.
Chris is #1 now.
They call it Soul full country
His voice sounds like an old Ford pick up rolling along a gravel road.
your spot on!
I feel when an artist can sing a song and bring out the water from my eyes, they are showing us their gift from GOD.
I love Babyface❤
Wow!!!
When you can FEEL the blood of sacrifice that built a nation.
Chris Stapleton song I was wrong at Austin city limits. With his instrumental and jamming that would make B.B. KING proud.
I must say, you are amazing at stringing out a video...
What some people don't know is that early Chris Stapleton music. You have to look up Steeldrivers.
