My Domane SL5 2020 model was noticeably heavier than my rim brake Emonda although most of my rides were fairly flat and recently with wheel & tubeless upgrade have saved a lot of weight. This new bike looks great, the weight has come down a lot and still looks like a super comfortable bike. If I had endless supplies of cash would be nice to upgrade but I’m happy with my current Domane, it’s more bike than I am rider.
I've got the Domane SLR6 2019 end of the mk2, it's a comfortable ride for UK roads with 30c tubless tyres and Zipp firecrest 303 wheels.. Every time TREK upgrade, just for a moment i wish i had waited for the latest model.. bike tech moves on too quickly and then i realise I'm not a pro or have endless supplies of money £££££££
I have the same Domane SLR6 2019 mk2, picked up a used one for a good price, I wouldnt want the MK 3 - such a heavy bike and dont need that down tube stash, our mk2's are a fair bit lighter. The mk4 does look good and they have got the weight down, I wish they would just bin the iso speed, my 28mm tyres provide a good level of comfort.
The slr model starts at near 11k (aud) for 105 group….. The bike has not changed to much in 100yrs, double triangle design, these prices will kill the sport in the long run or prevent people getting involved
I've wanted a Domane SL5 for a couple of years. But due to lack of stock availability I've not been able to buy. I ended up buying Colnago V3 Ultegra instead for £2700. I've watched the price of Domane SL5 rise and rise from the pandemic until now. I think the current price for SL5 Gen 4 to be ridiculous considering its using an older generation mechanical Shimano 105. It is a lovely looking frame though.
"If you compare a full build 3rd generation SL 5 to a 4th generation SL5 there is around a 700 gram saving". Can anyone point to where that number is coming from? The Gen 3 SL 5 on trek's website is listed at 9.2kg. A Ge 4 SL 5 is 8.93kg, both for size 56. That is less than 300 grams difference. Trek's FAQ document also says complete bikes are about 300 grams lighter.
It's a great question! This figure was quoted to us by Trek, however, given your findings, we'll put the question to Trek and see what they say. Watch this space...
I was about to buy a second hand Domane SL5 Gen 3 in mint condition at a bargain price. Was attracted by the IsoSpeed at the front and rear (mini full suspension 😉), but the 700g weight savings in the new Gen 4 makes me really think: comfort vs. weight. And the Gen 4 is at double the price of the Gen 3. What should I do? 🤨🤔
Due to the chip shortage, I quit building PCs and stopped on gaming. Transferred to cycling as a new hobby. Now, the price increases feels like getting ripped off once again as a consumer. These new bike prices are insane, and knowing a bit about planned obsolescence, I’m sure these products will be out of parts after a few years. Grab the last mechanical bikes you could still buy, cheap, reliable, easy to maintain.
It’s almost like inflation influences prices of everything in an economy. Might also have to do with the price of oil going insane as well. You know, considering the fact virtually every step of producing this bike requires oil.
So wait, the Gen4 SL5 is using the older mechanical Shimano 105, and the new Gen4 SL6 which used to be Ultegra now has the new 105 Di2 at the same price point at Ultegra, and now Ultegra Di2 has moved upmarket to the SL7 which is north of $7000.. Holy price increases. Bicycle prices are insane, no thank you. As consumers, we should stop buying for a while until prices get to be sane. In a few years, where you going to get a D shaped seat post if you need to replace this and Trek doesn't carry it anymore? What about all those batteries for electronic shifting, will they make those for the next 20 years? How about disc brakes, everyone is talking about how often they need to replace the pads, I've never replaced my rim brake pads ever. How about those tubuless tires which now cost double what we used to pay for regular tires. We no longer have low spoke count wheels, everything has to be 24 spoke due to disc brakes. Don't get me started on hookless rims, are those even safe?
The di2 battery is a common size and voltage used in rc cars, people will be able to rebuild them. Shimano also claimed 200 charge cycles, which I would be dead by the time I do hat many cycles.
I've been looking around and the 2022 Canyon Ultimate CF SL8 Disc has the best components considering price. It has Ultegra components plus a power meter at $3500 while all the newer bikes and a lot of 2022s are the same price with Shimano 105.
I care about this a lot more than the ultimate, and you guys are the only one who covered it. But not even trek did, I got a new fuel ex email, but not this. This could be a bike for me.
Kinda seems like a gravel bike that has been converted to a road bike with road tires and maybe lower gears. Seems like a second set of wheels with gravel tires is pretty much all you need.
Just a few years ago, it would be in the gravel category when they still came with 2 by cranksets. Nowadays you are forced with small gears or one by for gravel bikes. If you do more road than gravel, endurance bikes like the domane are where you want to look. Its the more road-focused gravel bike essentially, gravel bikes are slowly becoming hardtail mountain bikes with their gearing.
Where are official specs available? I am looking into SL5 so wanted to compare with 2022 and see is it worth the money. There are now some discount for 2022, up to 20-25%, so i wonder is the new one worth €1000 more. I would like a lighter bike, but i am not a competitor, just a casual rider looking for a comfy endurance bike.
So, the new Domane is basically a Checkpoint with fewer mounting points (less utility) and narrower max tire width (less utility). Simply not seeing a reason to choose this over the Checkpoint. My 2022 Checkpoint SL6 is a beast on gravel and single track with the 45mm tires and is quite rapid on the road when I'm running my other wheelset with 30mm tires. Seems to me the Domane is now stuck in a no-mans land where the Madone is more aero and the Checkpoint does everything the Domane can do with more utility. I'm sure they'll sell. But it just seems to be a solution looking for a problem.
If you need more compliance on the front, just buy a RedShift stem.....Saying that, I've got a Domane AL4, and with 35mm gravel tyres I wouldn't need any extra compliance.
These all look so nice. But alas we mortals will never see the difference 700 grams make. My favourite ride is a late 90's Gios, no where near the money of these race monsters. But dripping in campag. Easily keeps up with very modern tech on group rides.
On bikes with integrated internal routing, this has become impossible to do. This is the trade-off you get when you pick a bike with such a routing configuration.
The neighbor of a friend has the previous model with 105. She's a petite lady. The bike is a tank, it's so heavy it's not even funny I feel sorry for her. Absolutely no reason for her to have a frame like this and discs, she lives in the mountains and would be better off with a light rim brake rig. Those trek bikes make no sense.
If she picks another bike of the same class and brake type, I'd rather she pick the sixth-gen Roubaix. Reversible stem height adjustment (15 mm worth of it), regular internal routing, Future Shock 1.5 (2.0 on Expert and S-Works variants), lower clamping point for the seatpost and of course, doesn't weigh a ton, it's an endurance bike even I'd go for (endurance bikes aren't my first choice).
Sorry, but you still get much more for your money by going with a canyon endurance in carbon fiber. opt for a model with the leaf spring seat post for even more comfort.
its a real shame there is no Ultegra Mech ok i know its a shimano decision BUT. Why there are so many electronic models with their high costs is beyond me. For the average rider you dont need electronic shifting. Treks prices are over the top IMO . posting from Aus.
Sounds great, but the reality has been hugely disappointing. Quite how a major brand can send out bikes with the wrong seatpost is beyond me. Took 6 weeks to replace it with the right size! Also I'm dubious about the components - even though I bought the AL3 - as free hub needed replacing after 400 miles. Great looking bike but reality is poor.
Prices are just ridiculously so high. It’s amazing how the bike industry keep up with their business with the current world economy. Foolish to invest on a $5k+ let alone a $12k+ bike. Well, I suppose it’s an “easy” dough to spend if you’re rich.
This isn’t noticeably different from my 2022 SL 5, no adjustable rear iso speed, so top bento box, and a useless front iso speed with a cover that can’t keep its form. For this price and your still getting 105, shirty aluminum rims and R3 tires. I
The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.
Are one of “ the five things you should know”, its outrageous price? Will Specialized and Trek, go the way of Raleigh and Dawes (two former dominant UK bike brands) as Chinese brands become ever more refined and obviously better value?
So Trek, while saving cost and weight, admits ISO was as ephemeral as WSD. The existence of tubeless tires is not a rational factor in that decision. For all the tubeless riders on the internet, they're rare on the road and thus far from a majority. Just think how hollow that reasoning sounds. My Domane SL6 has them (iso) and I've doubted them, but she'll have to do for another ten years.
The only interesting thing about this bike is the huge tyre clearance, literally everything else is a ripoff and should result in Trek losing money with this impudence of a bike
Riding a ‘21 Domane sl5..;awesome bike. Definitely a buy again.

Put a 50$ hybrid or a 4k sl Domane infront of me I will always pick the hybrid. They both work the same.
Just a short time ago 38mm tires were the desired gravel tire size - now it’s apparently only good for ‘light gravel’ …
I completed unbound on mine
I remember when putting 25mm tires on your road bike, people would ask if you were doing cross.
Haha

When considering paying extra for tech I always ask myself,"will this make me faster than Greg Lemond was in 1988?"
Really helpful. Been looking at these since 2018. The simplified IsoSpeed looks a great balance of previous concepts.

I believe the 700 gram savings is when going from a Gen 3 SL to a Gen 4 SLR. Otherwise just going SL to SL is 300.

Seems like a killer Endurance bike with tires wide enough for some light fast gravel ❤

Just buy second hand one, the price of the bike depreciates even faster than car, and it’s a lot harder to sell a bike than a car

@Charles Man you can stick to your thumb shifters or whatever you insist on using then it only needs to be charged a few times a year.
